Gas Bandit's Political Thread V: The Vampire Likes Bats

It won't even result in him losing all his money. He's already squirreled it away outside the reach of the law by giving it to family members, hiding it in off-shore accounts, and more. The slippery bastard won't be truly hurt by this, yet he'll use this "persecution" as a way to advertise for his future endeavors.

So I agree, he should be thrown in jail. He, and anyone at InfoWars who participated in this misinformation and harrassment. But I'm not holding my breath.
I believe to truly put it beyond the reach of the legal system you need to have competent lawyers of your own. Which I think Alex Jones conclusively proved he doesn’t have.

Probably will be able to survive through various avenues but I doubt he walks away with his money untouched.

“From your lips to God’s ears.”

GodDAMN, this is amazing takedown of billionaires in general. It's built around arguing against the "goodwill" of the Patagonia CEO who reportedly donated most of his fortune. Which isn't really true upon closer examination.

As always, it comes down to billionaires doing whatever they want, moving their money around so they're not really giving much of it away, and avoiding paying taxes. Fuck the rich.

Some idiots sprayed tomato soup on one of Van Gogh sunflower paintings and glued themself to the wall in a museum in London, protesting new oil and gas projects. The paintings is save behind glass only the frame got damaged.

The same group has been doing to this to numerous famous pieces of art. They have said they are counting on the glass to save the art itself. And I still fucking hate it. They have a noble cause, but horrible methods. Potentially destroying cultural icons is not helping the climate.

It's getting very close to election day, folks. Remember to vote.

Also remember that right now Democrats only hold the house 220-212, and 538 forecasts a huge, controlling gain of republicans.

This is because:
1) The party not in the white house almost always wins the midterms
2) Though his numbers have improved some, Biden remains pretty unpopular with a 42% approval rating
3) Polls are showing a huge number of people believe the country is on the wrong track. Nobody is happy, and that energizes opposition (republican) voters and demoralizes establishment (democrat) voters. Which multiplies the effect of #1.

The American resistance to a functional centralized federal or state ID card system is completely idiotic and backwards. Everyone happily shares all their info with a whole bunch of big corporations and gives out all kinds of private info for the least bit of a chance to win something, but oh lordie imagine the government having an easy to use ID system. Social security number, picture, name, DOB, state visible; marital status, medical warnings, address encoded digitally.
It's not at all rocket science, it's easy, safe, and would remove SO MANY barriers to citizen participation - voting not the least of them.

The IRS already has the data anyway.

Like, that should only be an issue for people who have never paid taxes, and never intend to. And then you can just not get the ID, if you're already living like that.

The states that require ID also embrace voter suppression so this statement makes no sense.

:p

I'm fine with voter ID but FUND it and make it accessible! By all means, verify legitimate voters (we do that anyways) but don't exclude people due to costs, location, or ease of acquiring your rightful ID.

That's because that's exactly ass backwards.

1st you give everyone an easily accessible nationwide ID, usually at 14, then you have them present it when voting, instead of having to register manually like you're in the 18th century.

This.

It's literally illegal to walk the streets in most European countries without an official ID. Not that those laws are heavily enforced, but still. Whether it's ID'ing a corpse, noting down your name and address after being pulled over for a traffic violation, informing medical professionals in an emergency, checking your vote, heck even medicine prescriptions and train tickets are just put on my ID nowadays.
Give everyone an ID and you suddenly don't have "voter registration" anymore. Everyone is registered (homeless or nomadic people are listed with the address of the town hall of their last address, or place of birth for tax/voting/etc purposes) with a location. The list of everyone who can vote in my area is literally a five minute print job.
Also helps with such crap as a census, redistributing parliamentary seats basted on population,... Whatever.

The point is that these people don't want to make it easier to vote and the only recourse right now is to live in a state that actually cares about voting rights.

Approaching the argument from a "why is this not being done already" POV is pretty much answered by the blatant voter suppression.

I mean, there's also things like "shouldn't you have enough polling locations and mailboxes" and the answer is yes. Except republicans actively ripped them out to make it harder for people in certain areas to vote, both by mail and in person.

"Why doesn't this thing common in more socialist societies work in the late stage capitalism mad max wasteland of America?"

I mean, maybe I put a little of my own bias in that interpretation, but not much

I often say (and get worried looks when I say) "The problem with American Capitalism today is it ensures absolutely nothing happens unless it makes a billionaire richer."

Because anything that does something that doesn't make a billionaire richer is then bought by a billionaire and then altered to something that makes that billionaire richer.

I tend to describe America as "Socialism, but only for the rich." If you have money, you are not permitted to fail. If you don't have money, you are not permitted to succeed without cheating in some way.

I mean, "more socialist" is rather silly, since having an universal ID is pretty standard in places where hey wouldn't even qualify as a democracy.

A high school student's mural angers parents over what they say are hidden messages

Stay Healthy mural.jpg

"Among the drawings of the students, the artist added multiple smaller line drawings, including a mask, which some parents have complained is Satan, and a hamsa hand, which is considered a symbol for the hand of God in many cultures, but in this case, some adults have claimed it is a symbol of witchcraft."
...
"It's discrimination against Christian beliefs," one man said during public comments, adding that it also qualifies as "hate material."

"A woman called for more school counselors, saying, 'When adults pretend things that are like real life, it's a mental illness. We need counselors. We need medication that's going to help bipolar disorder. Fix their brains.' "
...
"The teen artist attempted to allay parents' fears about her work and her intentions. 'I put my artwork up there to make people feel welcomed,' she said in a quivering voice. Responding to adults' accusations that she schemed to include sinister images, she said, 'That's not what I'm a part of. That's not what I'm trying to put out there.' The student explained that the so-called Satan mask is a character from a video game and that the painted hand is a Latino symbol of protection. She eventually left the meeting in tears.

Afterward, one woman stood up to say, "I feel that she did a really good job finding excuses to defend the things she put on. None of us are that stupid."

--

Wait, the adults are getting freaked out that drawings are a real life threat, and it's the school that needs counselors? The adult brains are the ones that are malfunctioning.
