Minor victory thread

thats a negative ghost rider, there are special tools for scrapping build-up. q-tips can break or push the build up deeper into the canal.
Can confirm, I have extremely narrow ear canals and all Q-tips do for me is to pack all my ear wax into the bottom like someone loading a cannon. Had a very painful morning where both ears were impacted one Christmas.

If you can't find the specialized tool, what I recommend is getting one of those squeeze bulbs, they may be listed as "enema bulbs." Fill your sink with lukewarm water and very gently flush your ear(s). DO NOT use hot water as you don't want to scald your ear canal and DO NOT use a lot of force or you can rupture your eardrum. This is only to be done as cleaning and NOT as a remedy for impacted ear wax. See a specialist for that if you haven't already. With my ears, I only do this about once a month.

Americans are weird. Cleaning your ears once a month? Ewww.
I clean my ears almost daily with a slightly moist q-tip. You don't thump down, you gently carress the sides of the ear canal, and any soft wax comes along just fine. Don't go too deep - you're not going to hit your friggin' ear drum! Don't scrape hard - you don't want to injure the sides of the ear canal.
Yes, lukewarm water works fine too, but...once a month? Just gross, your ear wax must be almost pooring out of your ears by that time :p

They told me what probably happened was that for years when cleaning my ears I've been impacting them more and more. Using those cotton things that Bubble seems to think are younger than me. Which, by the way, were invented 60 years before I was born, TYVM.

... cotton was around when you were born? I thought plants didn't come around until the third day?
:p

You don't actually need to clean your ears at all. That being said, I still do it and completely understand why you might want to as well. However, I cannot fit a q-tip into my ear without hitting all sides at the same time. Like I said, extremely narrow ear canals. There is no "caressing the sides" possible for me. I do surface cleaning regularly, but using the syringes (thank you @PatrThom) is once a month. Anything more leads me to having ear aches and possible infections because my ears are incredibly good at retaining water. Other fun things I cannot do because of my ears are:
  1. Take baths in a tub. I can only shower instead.
  2. Dunk my head underwater when going swimming. At least not without a thorough cleaning after each swim.
  3. Wearing ear buds. They hurt after about 30 mins, I can only wear over-ear headphones.
Also, for added fun, I suffer from tinnitus. The idea of surgery to fix my ears has been floated from time to time, but so far it has never been bad enough to warrant anything being done.

OK, that's enough. Go stand in the corner and think about your behaviour this afternoon.

And don't you dare roll your eyes at me, young man!
stompstompstompstomp "wasn't me!" stompstompstomp "fake news!" stompstompstomp "one day they'll ALL be sorry"

Happens every time I put a kid in time out in the sims. And then then they IMMEDIATELY go right back to making a mess.

Dear Dave,

I know they weren't around back when you were young, but cotton tips are really useful to keep the wax buildup in your ears limited. Please try to clear your ear canals at least once a decade.:p
Don't put q-tips in your ear, you're just asking for a problem. Q-tips should only be used to clean the outside of the ear.

Also, if we're talking about ear hygiene, hydrogen peroxide is good for cleaning your ears, and if you have a buildup problem there are super cheap spray bottles that will let you wash it out yourself to save you a trip to the doctor. Just use warm water.

Or for applying/removing/smudging eye makeup as needed.

Bad things can happen with q-tips if used incorrectly.

That's him! That's the one that got me!

I'm surprised the conversation went this long without one of you posting the commercial for the ...ear-cleaner-gun-thingy where the guy screams like he's been shot.

Also, :eww:

My workplace is finally going to upgrade my computer. Well, give me a new computer. My current one starts struggling when it has to keep more than four applications open at the same time. Like, it works, but it's definitely not happy about having to work.

I changed my computer's case and it turned on at the second try. Some cable in the psu was loose. My friend who died two years ago was the one who help me build my first pc 10 years ago, and he died the day after he helped me buy the parts for my third pc. The case I bought from him was the only constant all these years but it needed to be replaced.

Got an extra ~$800 from work due to cramming in OT, vacation, etc.
New tires were ~$650.
...sweet! An extra $150 to have fun with!
Fixing the exhaust leak was $180.
...sweet! Work all but paid for my car repairs! And all with plenty of time before the holiday driving begins.

We finally managed to hire a new editor. He starts next Wednesday.

He's not a hot girl, so hopefully we can keep him around for a while.

Though as a straight guy I gotta admit he's still pretty easy on the eyes.

No Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow for multiple reasons, so I decided today was gonna be a cheat day and had Five Guys. Little Bacon Cheeseburger All The Way and little cajun fries. Om to the nom. The burger was good, although the structural integrity left something to be desired. Not much holding it together when I set it down halfway through to monch on some more fries.

My dad had an MRI on Monday morning that focused on his kidney. Today he was told that they now don't think the growth is cancerous. They'll have him get checked again in six months to make absolutely sure it hasn't grown, but at least it's some good news.
Now to get through his heart valve surgery on the 12th.

This past year has been crazy busy. I lost my job last December, but got on with a startup working in AI pretty quickly. We're doing quite well, having secured funding from a lot of major companies. The founder and I just got a provisional patent on the idea we invented to approach the problem. It's funny, because I was working in machine learning at the beginning of my career, but I couldn't get traction in it. Now people can't shut up about it. Timing is everything. All in all, it has been a good if really busy year.
