[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

When I get dizzy and faint when I stand up it's because my blood pressure is too low and I'm told to eat more salt. For real.

It was scary low after my stomach scope and they were worried, but they sent me home.

Eating too much salt might have some unexpected benefits. Some people say to reduce salt to lose weight, but other studies have found that eating too much salt makes your body require up to 25% more food intake to maintain body weight. No word on whether it's specifically too much salt or whether they're talking about sodium level in general, the studies are still new.

Also I can't find the link to the article I read, sorry. But it's out there.

Underling #2 got busted for padding his hours on his time sheet - IE, he'd come in at 11pm to do his voice tracking for the next day, so that nobody would be there to see how long it took him, then he'd put 2 hours on his time sheet. It does not take 2 hours to voice track a 4 hour show. It takes, at most, 40 minutes - if you've never done it before. When I had an air shift, I could do it in 20. And the time stamps on all the computer activity in my system confirms it was taking him about a half hour.

Anyway, he was padding so much, that he was frequently claiming enough hours to be considered full time instead of part time (which is what got HR on his ass about it). He got a come-to-Jesus meeting with the GM and HR director about it, and his hours got dialed down (which is a pain in the ass for me, too, because that gives him less time to do shit I want him to do).

That was last week.

Ever since then, Underling #1 and I have noticed he's been a mopey little bastard all the time at work, like he doesn't want to be here (which he probably doesn't). His attitude has gone down the shitter, and his productivity with it.

He needs to snap out of it or he'll find himself replaced entirely. Plenty of college kids in this town would love to have his job. I don't wanna have to train a new person, but it doesn't help me that things I need done aren't getting done.

ARgh. I just rebooted my work machine, and now it can't see any of the shares of windows XP or Server 2003 machines on our network. I suspect this is because I updated my machine's SMB recently >_< I can see the windows 7 share from the XP machines, but I can't see the XP shares from the windows 7 machine. God what a fucking pain. I got work to do, I don't have time to tinker like a shade tree fucking mechanic.

Wow it's been a long fucking time since I had to reboot into safe mode to dick with shit. Fuck my life.[DOUBLEPOST=1497577236,1497576759][/DOUBLEPOST]I don't know why I bother with fucking system restore. It never fucking works. It just fucking wastes everybody's time.

Hello, Microsoft software engineers? You often lament about why nobody updates, and nobody reboots... you know why? This. Fucking. Shit. Right. Here. As long as I never update, and I never reboot, everything always works perfuckinfectly. You send me an update that's supposed to fix something? EVERYTHING FUCKING BREAKS. Never update. Never reboot. And that's coming from a fucking I.T. professional. Having to reinstall windows every 6 months when I was in college was cute. Having to do so in a business environment has me seriously fucking reconsidering my policy on Macs. What happened? XP was like this golden fucking age of "shit just works." Now 7 comes along and you think you're smarter than me and you fuck. up. everything.

I know what their fucking answer's gonna be, too.

"Wull, wull, you should update those outdated machines on your network."

Fuck. You. Buddy.

First, I'd love to have the budget. Second, I'd love to fucking not need windows XP to run software that my business requires to do its accounting. Third of all, I'd love it if WINDOWS SERVER LICENSES didn't START at 900 fucking dollars and go up to "as much as we think we can milk out of you." Fuck. You. With something large and sandpapery.

Fuck it, it's 9:15pm. I'm going home. FAAAAGGHHKKK

So, I know I said I was going home... but I'm still here.

And thank FUCKING god I finally figured out how to fix the shit without having to do a reinstall.

See, I remembered I didn't so much "upgrade" SMB as I just disabled SMBv1, as v2 and v3 are already present on Windows 7. But XP only has SMBv1 (the version with the security flaw that lets WCry and its pals fuck your computer up).

So, fuck it. I googled up the research, and turned SMBv1 back on on my computer. And now the shit works like fuckin magic. Imagine that.

And here I had been trying all kinds of other fancy ass shit like going to another server that I could connect to, VNCing into that, creating a symbolic link folder with mklink to pretend that the shares I needed were folders on its hard drive, then re-share those "folders" so that my workstation could get to the share via the share but ho-ho-holy shit did that not work. Turns out sharing a share of a share is something that technically can be done, but it takes some super-ascended guru shit and windows server packages I don't have to pull off.

Anyway, I'm just fucking relieved it's back to working again, and thanking my lucky fucking stars I didn't implement this "fix" on any of the other computers in the building. If this shit had happened in the middle of a thursday (the worst day of the week) to EVERYBODY who needed production server access? I think I might have chewed all of my own fingers off in a fit of frustrated rage. All of them. And then flung my bloody stumps at anyone who came near me until I lost consciousness, after having smeared a bloody "DNR" on my forehead so that they'd know to let me fucking die.[DOUBLEPOST=1497581997,1497581593][/DOUBLEPOST]OH and one last thing... did you know that if you have SMBv1 disabled, the microsoft support page telling you how to turn the various SMB versions on and off MYSTERIOUSLY TRANSLATES ITSELF TO FRENCH?!!! I SWEAR TO GOD THIS PAGE WAS IN FRENCH UNTIL I FOUND ANOTHER RESOURCE THAT TOLD ME WHAT I NEEDED TO KNOW. EVEN THOUGH IT HAS /EN-US/ RIGHT THERE IN THE URL, CAME OUT FRENCH AS AN ASS TONGUING. SWEAR TO FUCKIN GOD.

I suspect this is because I updated my machine's SMB recently >_<
Blame WannaCry.
The patches that disable the infection vectors also mess up SMBv1 since even Microsoft wants you to stop using SMBv1.
Of course, their recommended alternative is "install a newer version of Windows, preferably WinX" so I don't know what that'll get you. My main PC at home is dual-boot WinXPPro/WinXPro now (formerly WinXPPro/Win7Pro but upgraded during the free WinX window), and when I boot into XP, Explorer won't let me load most webpages any more. Windows says, "You should get the WannaCry update, it's available on the Microsoft website" but then won't actually allow me to load the website so I can get the patch. I can load some websites, but not others, and it's nothing consistent (like https) enough for me to figure out why some sites work but not others. It's like Microsoft is deliberately washing its hands of anything < WinX as fast as it can.

Oh, and as for me, I had the day off today, so of course I spent an hour of it on the phone with my mortgage company, running to the post office an hour before they closed, going grocery shopping for an hour, and driving almost 6hrs there and back to my old house plus the time it took to mow the lawn so I don't get a ticket only to get there right as a giant deluge started and continued for about half an hour. At least it was cooler once I finally got to mow. Found a letter once I got there that the city wants me to certify my septic system with them within 10 days or they will force me to pay many tens of thousands of dollars to connect to the city sewer, but when I went to the city center, the person I need to talk to about it is on vacation until July 7th, and the alternate person her voicemail says to contact has been out sick for a week due to a family emergency. And it's been 13 days.

I'm almost looking forward to going to work tomorrow.

EDIT: Oh, looks like you already discovered the SMB fix on your own. 'grats.

Isn't it always that way? Programming, too. You try all kinds of fancy fixes and it turns out it was something silly and simple all along.

That is often the way, however, I'm still not good enough in powershell to have done this fix without copying and pasting cmdlets to judge this one "simple" for me :p I'm just glad it's fucking over and I didn't have to do a recovery install.

My vision is kind of crappy today. Not completely unexpected, because I was told that with my vision being as bad as it was, I would probably have some roller coaster days until I'm fully healed. It's more annoying because I can still MOSTLY see fine, but things just randomly fuzz in and out and I hate it and it's annoying.

I finally finished the picture I've been doing for my uncle and he's taking it to the hospital tonight for my aunt. It started as a photorealistic white daisy and turned into a 3D whatever the opposite of photorealistic is pink and purple and white textured daisy on a sparkly, blue panpastel background with bubbles blended in. I'm super self conscious about it because it wasn't realistic. My parents and sister and kids love it, but I'm not so sure, because I'm so used to drawing realisticly.

I go to frame it today and even though I spray varnished the crap out of it, I ruined two of the pure white mats with stray pastel dust. I nearly cried. This young guy at Michael's was able to make me some super nice replacements, so I'm ok now, but thank god I had the extra frames here. I go and buy them each time I'm there because of the 50% off coupons.

I need my next project to just work the first time. Super easy.

That guy annoyed me instantly. "Let's build the shittiest (not cheapest) pc we can, and then bitch about how shitty it is and how it won't play all the modern games." Well no shit.

The hard drive they featured is $20 on Newegg (5400rpm 160gb WD1600AVVS). That's actually more expensive than the 7200 RPM version (at $17).

Not to mention that the premise of their video ("Build it yourself, it'd be cheaper") is not the same as what they presented ("Build the shittiest pc you can, and then bitch about it being shitty.") It's a total strawman.

I dunno if this was supposed to just be funny. But I wasn't laughing.

Never update. Never reboot.
I shoulda listened to you. Windows just told me I needed to update (KB4022715 for those interested), after restarting my keyboard doesn't work. Using the on screen keyboard I log on & try to uninstall the update - only to find out that it failed to install properly. You broke shit & didn't even have the decency to fix whatever it was you thought was broke? (Sidenote: Why don't updates tell you what they're fixing anymore? These days it's just "Cumulative Updates for Windows". I want to know what you're planning on doing to my system damnit!) Go into device manager, find out my keyboard doesn't have a driver installed anymore. Go to Logitech website, download & reinstall driver. Still doesn't work. Eventually get it working by right clicking & uninstalling all instances of the keyboard in device manager, then unplugging it, replugging it & reinstalling the drivers.

Googling this it looks like keyboards aren't the only thing this update can break - printing, cortana, the start menu, not connecting to the internet or connecting at a much slower speed than before (as in dropping from 40Mb/s to 1.5). Basically fuck this shit & Microsoft needs to give us back the option to refuse updates.

I just keep telling mine to "snooze" on installing the update.

Me: Welp, think I'll finally go see Wonder Woman.

*sees only one showing tonight at 10 PM...in goddamn 3D*

Also me: *sigh* Screw you, Cineplex.

EDIT: By the way, this means I'm NOT going to see it. Though I'd like to before it leaves theaters. Just not in 3 fucking D.

Apparently mine already installed it. Either it didn't screw up my computer, or my computer is already so slow I didn't notice. And honestly - either one is equally possible.

While I'll miss my parents this summer, one DEFINITE plus is that its 5 weeks without my mom cleaning! Seriously, she threw away two working markers, several recyclables(there's an entire BUCKET-its not that hard) and an ENTIRE box of unexpired batteries. We don't even throw away EXPIRED batteries, my dad takes them to a place! ALSO-an old Monster mania flier I was saving WHICH IS NOW slightly damp.

On the other hand, it could explain why my wife's new laptop, which had been running flawlessly (since we updated all of the drivers at least) up until last week, is suddenly crashing at least twice a day, struggles to stay connected to wifi, and took eight attempts to update MalwareBytes.

You prefer seeing movies in only one half D? Crazy.

God friggin' dammit. I've really had it with my boss. I like my work, and the people who work for me, and the people I have dealings with in other departments, but the way my boss treats me is just....Petty? Childish? Dickish? Like a bully? All of those things?

BAH.

Document everything.
I try to . I'm seriously considering quitting and leaving a nice long goodbye note to the big boss, but *sigh*
The company's too small for its own good. He's my direct superior, but he's also second only to the CEO. If he behaved like this in a big company he wouldn't be manager for long, honestly. Not just me but several others would've filed complaints about him. Here, though, well, management's just 3 people, he's pretty much an integral part of the company's structure. He's not going anywhere, which means if I can't get to grips with his "style" of management (literal quote: "you have to treat these guys like young dogs: keep 'm on a short leash and occasionally give them a good yank to show who's boss"), there's no future for me here. I stayed at my last job for 9 years despite not being entirely happy but not being unhappy enough to leave - now I'm seriously considering quitting after just 4 months becauseh e's just pushing me towards depression. Which is madness considering I actually like the job itself and the location and pretty much everything else about it.
