[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

We have an on-demand bus system here in my small town. It's... okay. Sometimes the trip is quick; sometimes you have to pick up what seems like half the city before you're dropped off at your destination.

During orientation, they asked us why we chose to go to OSU. They were not prepared to hear "Because it's the only 4 year college I can get to via public transportation."
Huh. Up here we're currently flabbergasted that Toronto's transit system was recently named best in North America.

Maybe because it actually gets used. I would totally expect lots of students have chosen one University over the other one (or two - I've never been completely clear on whether it's more fully a University or College - what you'd call a Community College - and it's actually the only one of the 3 right on a subway line) based on transit consideration

Houston's public transit gets used rather heavily. It just doesn't get used by the rich white guys, so no one cares about it.

So I met up with a yoga instructor yesterday to ask her some job market research questions. It's something required to get funding for the instructor course I may take in September.

Anyway, I told her that I'd eventually like to take the DDP Yoga certification as well, and maybe market it around here as "Broga" to bring yoga to more guys. Since there's kind of a stigma that yoga is a "chick thing" or a "it's just stretching!" thing.

And then she told me that "Broga Yoga" is already an actual thing. Maybe not around here, but it's a thing. Well dammit, here I thought I was being all clever and original.

Went out for lunch with my polycule for a birthday. Right as we got dessert, birthday girl started having fainting spells every few minutes, and horrible coughing good. There's a long story here about exposure to pesticide at work, bronchitis, etc. But the short of it is that we're on hour 4 in the ER, and they're running a shitload of tests... CT scan most recently, so I guess they're thinking maybe neurological?

Anyway, not how we wanted to spend the day.

Somebody's stealing paper from the copier. It holds 6 reams, and between Wednesday and this morning, 2 of them went missing. There has NOT been that many copies/printouts made. We've been noticing it running out of paper a lot faster than would be thought normal over the last few months, but this is the first time it's been so blatant.

This means I'm going to have to start monitoring it and checking the security cameras.

What a fucking pain.

People steal the weirdest shit. Paper is cheap. There was a guy in one of my previous labs that was fired for stealing paper towels. He took a whole box of them - probably cost 14 bucks at Costco. So strange.

I feel more antipathy for the paper thief than I did for the guy who got fired for jerking off to porn in the front office.

Mostly because that guy, at least, didn't create more work for me.

It really does boggle my mind what people are willing to throw away their livelihoods over right?? A case of paper towels vs a job that pays you enough to buy as many cases of them as you need.

This guy was well-liked. Everyone was left confused by it all. The professor of the lab just happened to be coming in on a Saturday when this guy was loading up his trunk. Weird. I don't remember if he had kids, but he was married.

I find it hard to believe someone would want to steal that much paper.
I think I've printed a sum total of 25 pages of anything over the last 12 months.

I'm pretty sure whoever this is has basically walked off with a ream a week, give or take.

Paper on craigslist sells for about $2/ream, so 2-4 reams a week ends up being $200 - $400 a year. Further, this may simply be the item they're regularly stealing which has been noticed. They may have multiple sources of similar revenue - nothing so large it immediately attracts attention, but enough small things going on that once a month they can sell a few items and have a mini payday.

Of course there also exist those who steal things which they have no use for, but feel they are somehow owed due to some other perceived imbalance. I seem to recall a story in the past of someone stealing something they couldn't even use from their job, and so much of it they ran out of space to store them, so they gave some away, or rented a storage locker or something, which is what led to the discovery of the theft - their employer never noticed the missing items.

It would be interesting to check the copier supplies or page count to see if they are taking them from the copier or printing a few thousand copies of items as a side business, but I suppose you'd notice the toner running out more frequently than it should be.[DOUBLEPOST=1499460727,1499460644][/DOUBLEPOST]Running around with loose sheaves of blank paper doesn't make much sense, and is harder to sell on craigslist, so making copies would make more sense to me.

On this particular printer/copier, I can control what hours people are allowed to print things, and it logs all jobs. I've been over the logs, and nobody's doing massive amounts of off-hours printing/copying.

The trap is set, now, though, so I guess I'll find out who it is and why soon enough.

6 to 12, its going to be someone who will face no repercussions for their transgressions, meaning you've completely wasted your time.

Nobody of any consequence is here after I leave. And the General Manager has his dander up about it, too. So unless the station OWNER is sneaking in here at 2 am to steal paper...

I never did much printing at home until I started my volunteer job. I made it very clear to them that they would need to reimburse me for my ink and paper or I wouldn't continue doing it.

I am so tired of fighting depression. I am always tired and I am so sad that I physically hurt and my mind torments me constantly. Half the time I can't sleep very well and even if I can sleep my mind continues to torment me in my dreams. It just doesn't seem fair, I'm making positive changes to my life and overall I don't have a reason to complain but I still can't shake depression. I still hurt, I'm still tired, I'm still tormented mentally. I just hate myself and I don't know why I hate myself but I do. My doctor put me on some meds but they don't seem to be helping much if at all. I think they need to raise the dosage but they wanted to keep me at a low level for the first month or so. Hopefully when I see my doctor next week they will increase the dosage but even if they do it won't magically make me all better. I'm just tired of fighting but I have to just keep fighting but I don't know how much longer I can. :(

@Hylian do you have a support group who are also dealing with everything you've got on your plate? Even if you don't participate your experience is not uncommon and there are many who have gone through what you are going through and it may be helpful for you to open up to such a group and be embraced by them.

I imagine you have/do but I wanted to make sure, this is not something you should feel like you have to go it alone.

I have a few family members and some friends who are supportive but I don't have any special group or anything

Consider finding a forum. There's a group on Reddit, for instance, and they have many, many posts by people who are walking the same path you're traveling and experiencing the same challenges. You aren't alone, and not to dismiss the support you already have, you will find strength and support of a nature you can't get many other places.

I occasionally peruse the reddit trans boards but I don't post on them much.

New intern joined my department today. I'm trying to go through how the translation software works with him, how our company implements various policies, things to look out for when translating and editing, etc. The guy keeps interrupting me and trying to say the answer ahead of time, and what's worse the answers he comes up with are invariably wrong.

"Ok so you look at your case list in the ERP, and click on the first one, and you can see the file path for the file, located on our file server. So next you..."

"I know, I navigate to the directory and double click on the file to open it."

"Actually, you're supposed to download it to your local machine and work on it there, and only upload the completed file after you're done. Ok, after you've downloaded it and opened it up, you need to load a translation memory into the software..."

"Yeah I click here (*click click click*) and choose the file, and it's loaded."

"No, that's the termbase, not the translation memory. To load the translation memory you click here, then here, then select the file here, then click ok. All right, after you've got the TM loaded, you can run concordance searches on the TM. The keyboard shortcut for concordance searches is..."

"Oh, control-F3, right?"

"No, just F3."

I get the feeling he's not doing this to be a dick, he's just rather nervous on his first day and wants to make a good impression. But seriously dude, relax and let me teach you the stuff you need to know. I don't think any less of you for not knowing this stuff, stop trying to impress me.

The state pays out its unemployment benefits on a debit card tied to a bank... that has no branches in the state. The closest one is nearly 40 miles north of here!

I should probably switch it to direct deposit instead.

Mentioned I started playing Brütal Legend last night around midnight.
It was only supposed to take the 30min or so I was waiting for some files to come off my thumb drive plus my Diablo 3 Necro post, but there's no clock in the game so I didn't realize the time ... until after 4. And I had to leave for work by 8:30 this morning.

I was only 4min late, but I'm reeeeeeeally looking forward to coming home to meet my pillow tonight.

That sounds inconvenient. Keep in mind that most banks offer a deposit from debit card without the ATM surcharge. Go to the teller with the deposit slip filled out, use the "other" line with the amount you want to deposit, and explain to the teller that you want to deposit money from the debit card into your account.

Alternately, it's probably cheaper in gas alone to simply accept the atm surcharge and use a local Atm to get the money, it's certainly worth the waste of time, but the gas cost alone should be a compelling argument in favor of just using the atm to withdraw the cash every two weeks or so (depending on your atm withdrawal limit).

But if they offer direct deposit that would seem the best option.

I can use it as a MasterCard, so the only real inconvenience is if I need cash after my regular account runs dry (if it does before I find new employment.)
