This one could also go in the income inequality thread:

Immigrant worker shot dead by police at Oklahoma meatpacking plant

"A worker who filmed the incident and was fired by the company in retaliation told the Guardian that Mariar was fired by his supervisor and then told to finish his shift by human resources. The supervisor confronted Mariar, presumably afterwards, and police arrived to escort him off the premises. Seaboard Foods did not comment on, nor refute this characterization. "

" The worker said that management kept workers on the job after the shooting. 'I worked in maintenance. All they had us do was cover the scene with plastic, and we proceeded to finish what was on the production line.' He added that 'This company fired me for recording the truth they were trying to brush under the mat. They never asked me if I was OK. It was my first time seeing a guy get killed – and then I get fired.' "

“ 'I witnessed the entire thing, from when they [presumably the supervisor] started arguing with him until he was shot,' the worker said, explaining that Mariar 'had a company-issued band-cutter in his hand. When the police got to the plant, the guy was already working, minding his own business.' The video shown to the Guardian showed Mariar doing just this. "

we already know that police kill people all the time
Colorado deputy shoots and kills man who popped an anti-anxiety pill*
The deputy was apparently very, very concerned about what the suspect had just put into his mouth. So concerned, in fact, that there was a struggle which ended with the suspect getting shot three times in the chest.
In the body cam video, McWhorter touches Ward's arm and asks him why he's acting strange. Ward responds that cops make him "nervous" and he "has anxiety." Ward explains to the officers that he has had bad encounters with police in Pueblo before. [...] The sheriff's deputies involved in the case were cleared of any criminal charges by the district attorney, following an investigation that found the shooting justified.
What I don't understand is how a suspect putting something into his mouth is somehow a threat to the officer, a threat which required the officer to respond with lethal force. The only things I can think of that warrant such an extreme response from the officer is either that the officer was concerned the suspect had just attempted to commit suicide by pill (in which case why shoot him to death?) or else the officer was hoping to charge the suspect with possession of a controlled substance and consumption would therefore destroy the evidence.

Ward's mother has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit, and I honestly wish her luck.

It's possible that the cop has bought into their own propaganda, and thinks that there are drugs that instantly put someone into a rage and give them superhuman strength.

Okay, I hate to do this, but just to be clear they didn't just shoot him from popping a pill. They attempted to detain him after witnessing him pop the pill, and in the ensuing anxiety driven freak out, the dude attempted to escape and "tackled" the officer that would soon kill him. The two were rolling on the ground in each others arms when the officer pulled out his gun and shot him point blank in the chest, the dying dudes arm still wrapped around the officer. The DA dismissed the case because the officers claim in this moment he was attempting to reach for the same gun that ultimately killed him, which based on the video was possible within a reasonable doubt.

Don't get me wrong, they shouldn't have ripped him out of the car in the first place. He didn't do anything wrong, even if he was taking illegal drugs (which would be stupid directly in front of officers) there was no reason to escalate the issue into a dogpile, but many people seem to make it out like they shot him in the car as he was putting the pill in his mouth or getting instantly shot in the chest as he was pulled out, and none of that is true.

I did get that part, I just didn't understand why they would choose to escalate the situation over a pill. Any pill.

Must be a Marvel Comics fan.

I can't even begin to tell you the bullshit they fed us.

OH WAIT, yes I can. Let's start with this pile of psuedo-scientific bullshit.

We were literally fed this lie constantly and it is a fucking lie. It's entirely made up excuse for cops to get off scott free from murder.

WE BELIEVED IT. Most probably still do. I was young and dumb and taught that cops were the good guys. My uncle was a cop, he was a good guy. Why would they lie to us about this wholly believable sciencey sounding reason why people die when you taze them 42 times?

God I need so many drugs to sleep at night.

Police insist there is no foul play involved here, lawyers and family are urging the feds to investigate since the police won't:

Imagine how bad things would be without our boys in blue.
But without cops, who would show up after my house has been robbed to tell me they'll file a report but that I shouldn't hold out hope for seeing any of my stuff again, and shoot my dog?

Damn, they only shoot the dog after talking to you ?

You got some well restrained cops where you're from...

POLICE DO NOT PROTECT PEOPLE THEY PROTECT PROPERTY

I kind of feel like that needs to be said any time the subject of police shows up.

The shocking part is they actually wrote it down and codified it. Not only did they say the quiet part out loud, they printed it, stapled it, highlighted it, and posted it.
