Rant VIII: The Reckoning

Quick update: They've moved us to a private room while waiting for surgery. They anticipate it should be relatively early in the morning. We'll be taken back home in an ambulance once discharged, which should happen 24-48 hours later.

She's back. Details are few and far between (the doc'll be back tomorrow, so I'm going by her foggy recollection here) but: Tibia fractured (10 cm long), knee affected as well, but if it HAD to be affected, it was in the cleanest way. Whatever that means. Three weeks without bending to start with, with physical therapy in there too.

She's mostly devastated that she's losing her whole Winter because of a stupid accident. She's an avid skier.

Thanks for all the hugs, dudes!

Aww, poor girl! Even with the good news, that's lousy luck. I hope her healing is quicker than expected!

Doc came back, confirms that all went well and also that she's not getting discharged until she can actually stand, and walk on crutches and has her pain and nausea under control (we live 2 hours away). This was a concern, as we're in a private room through sheer luck, and space is at a premium.

So we wait for now, but at least we know for sure all went well.

She's getting better (very very slowly of course, baby steps and all that). Pain, fatigue and nausea (brought mainly by the first two) are the enemies now.

Be very grateful you're in Canada and not in the US. I can guarantee that the hospital or insurance would try to bill you at least $5000 for that.

Yuuuuup. Spouse had nasal surgery over Christmas break and hospital tried to bill us for $9,000+ for that even though we have met our deductible for the year already. We called them and they immediately went, "Oh, that was an error, we were waiting for your OTHER insurance to pay out first." We don't have any other insurance. So they fixed that and we wound up paying only about $200 total.

That was super greasy of them. I wonder how many people just pay?

All of my oil changes etc are covered by warranty, but that doesn’t stop them from handing me an invoice and leaving it up to me to remind them and get the invoice zeroed.

Believe me, we're both very aware how insanely lucky we got. The injury could've been much worse (no joint damage, also wasn't her head), we were near a hospital with a top-flight orthopedics department (as opposed to our home hospital), we got a private room, they allowed us to leave a day later and, of course, we're in Canada and not the US.

My aunt's husband died. I didn't know him very well. I'm very sorry for my aunt and my cousins. Vero says we have to go to the wake. I don't understand wakes. The last one I went was my grandmother's and I spent the night speaking to @Dave

I don't understand wakes.
Historically, it was because medical science used to be so crappy that lots of people were getting accidentally buried alive, so it became standard practice for the family to sit around for a few days to see if the deceased would "wake."

Now it's just a prolonged funeral service, and really, it's mostly just so people can be supportive of the family.

Funerals and wakes aren't for the dead. It's for the people still alive that are grieving. That's why you are there, to show your support for them.

I don't know. I got to see my aunt devastated, barely acknowledging those in line waiting for hugging her. My cousins weren't even there. It's like they do this things because it's what people expect you do.

That happens too. It's great when your needs meet societal expectations, but if not, society's going to expect it of you anyway.

Just found out my best friend of early childhood (5-10 years old) whom I haven't really spoken to since I was a teenager is....well, one of the biggest purveyors and producers of child pornography in this provinces history. No one told me about his arrest last year and I've been completely unplugged from RCMP stuff for 2 years.

It's.......mind wrecking.

Like my friend the middle school teacher who was arrested for child porn? Blows your mind how well these people hide it. I had no idea.

Since there's currently no anonymous posting, I'll just say, without meaning anyone specific at all, that some people you may or may not know, may have a father who was, at some point, interested in children in an unhealthy way.
Yes, they can hide it well, and be perfectly functioning, normal people to all outward appearance. This isn't actually strange - why would they be instantly recognisable? It's not like you can instantly tell who's gay, or into bdsm, our into model trains, or interested in folk dancing. It's not a complete character, it's a particulate. And one they're usually very aware of they have to hide.

I've always wondered if I'd ever seen an ex of mine on the news for something. Not child porn (god, I hope not), but you rack up enough dates, one of them's bound to do something spectacularly stupid eventually.

They went out with me, so you know there's a strong possibility. :D

"Our top story tonight: A 40-year old man was arrested this afternoon for creating a giant ball of opiates out of crushed pain pills and his own bodily fluids. Officials indicate that the man kept shouting "I did it for Keltzy" while he was being loaded into the police vehicle. It is currently unknown how long the man had been working on his ball of opiates, but given that it's approximately the size of a basketball, police estimate that it has taken him several years. Investigations are ongoing, including what the man intended to do with the opiates ball, and who Keltzy is."

Been staying at the hotel since the house got foreclosed. First word that the hotel may be sold came down this past Friday. Turns out it was and new owners take over this Friday. And... I have to be out of here by then. That's all I know. I haven't been looking for a place because I wouldn't be able to afford much of anything. The hotel GM has a lead that looks promising, but has little in the way of contact information.

The big obstacle after simply finding a place is having the money to move in by Friday. On my own, that's simply not happening.

I'm going to have to jump on rental sites to see if I can find something safe where I'm not eating saltines every meal. I'm not in a position to give up my phone, so there's $150/month that won't go to rent. If internet's not included, that's going to have to be paid for, too. Will NOT go without. I'd go crazy.

FFFFUUUUCCCCKKK.

I need the hug reaction back!!

So. Got a lead on an efficiency that's available. Utilities included. I'm going to give them a call in the morning.

My sister thinks she'll be able to help out with the deposit. Even with that, it's still another week to payday. I'm still about $100 short right now, and that's if I don't spend even a penny of what I have left. Considering I have no furniture beyond an office chair and some IKEA cubes, it's going to be... difficult.
