Wouldn't a man be more apt to know different breeds of dogs than a woman, particularly hunting dogs?

I just find those last few gender distinctions weird.

I agree, when it comes to the larger dogs. A man might not tell a westie from a scottie, but he sure as hell knows German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Great Danes, Labradors and probably Golden Retrievers... along with a few others that stand out such as chihuahua and poodle. Could have trouble telling the various bulldogs apart though, sometimes even I get that wrong, and I consider myself a dog lover. Just a couple weeks ago I mistook a boston terrier for a french bulldog.

I know nothing about dogs, but that might be partly because I've never kept a pet in my life, and because I've never gone hunting.

Or maybe it's not based on gender stereotypes, but on an actual couple. Could be a guy whose girlfriend is nuts for dogs made this.
