The katana, electric guitar, and one other weapon are Gamestop pre-order exclusives. Bullshit, if you ask me... and I'm not exactly sure how they are going to handle it in the game.
Folks in the Steam forums are claiming that if one person on a server has the pre-order items, all the players will be able to use them in that game. Haven't seen anything from Valve on the subject, since I didn't see any links to the interview people were talking about.

So on Kotaku there was a "Justify Your Game" segment on L4D2. This feature isn't specific to L4D, and has nothing to do with the complaints, its something they do for a lot of games. Basically you get 30 seconds to sum up your game. The dev was wicked excited, but honestly his description of the game just lowered my desire to spend money on this game. Here's what he covered.

1) New maps

2) New player characters

3) New common infected

4) New weapons

5) New major infected

He didn't mention the AI director and graphics update, but even with those I don't think it justifies the game.

I guess my attitude on L4D2 is that L4D1 is as close to perfect as I need. I kind of feel bad for the studio because they did such a damned good job on L4D1 that the only things they can add are generally superficial. The exception is the AI director, but have any of yall ever felt like the AI director as it is is bad?

So I won't be buying the new one. Could people that are excited about it tell me what it adds that L4D1 doesn't already have in its basically perfect form? Aside from minor tweaks? I'm honestly curious, not being sarcastic.

oh yeah, linkies

I totally can't see how L4D2 justifies anything. Any sequel could add new things to a game. It takes guts to fix what's not broken, and it's even ballsier to change nothing. I say, they should put L4D1 in L4D2's box and sell that.

I can't figure out what parts of your statement are sarcasm. I'm being serious with my question, what is it that you are really looking forward to with the sequel?

That's the magic of me.

At the moment, I'm not looking forward to it because my new computer sucks and runs old L4D like shit, so I won't be digging into this until my old one gets fixed.

When that magic time comes, I am looking forward to the new Valve-designed maps, the new types of infected (special and normal) which will change how the game is actually played based on what you have to do to handle them and how you have to play as them, sorta-looking forward to the new melee weapons (though not much, really), and any lobby/hub improvements that usually come with a sequel but aren't really worth mentioning. I hope they come, because even with the changes to L4D's lobby, it still feels kind of clunky. I know that Valve probably thinks it's streamlined compared to Team Fortress 2, but at least with choosing a server there, you have more freedom.

Is this going to be Half-Life to Half-Life 2? Of course not. But it's going to be too much to simply patch, nor should it be just a patch. That said, feeling L4D is fine as-is and not wanting to buy a sequel because you're happy with it is not the same as boycotting the sequel because you didn't feel the original lived up to expectations. I'm not begrudging your choice, but it is a step-up from the last one. If they changed a lot to make it what you seem to envision as a sequel, wouldn't that be breaking said perfection?

I think the main problem with many people (myself included) is that, while they're claiming it's too much to simply patch, it really doesn't feel like that. Granted, they may have re-tooled the Director AI/the underlying code, and--if so--I don't think that should be a simple patch.

I think a lot of this could've been avoided if it wasn't $50 (PC) or $60 (360) for what people have come to expect in patches and downloads. I would've had no problem paying $30 or so for this, but--considering Valve's always been "the good guys" and have had amazing support for their games in the past--coughing up full price for what feels like a standalone expansion pack just doesn't sit well with me.

The other issue is that an expansion means that support will continue for the original product, whereas a sequel almost always means support will disappear. I know that they said it wouldn't but, its hard to accept that when all other instances are otherwise.

Yeah, this. Especially given the relative lack of support for Left 4 Dead already.

Support sounds like a legitimate concern to me. I think Valve's idea was to make L4D as they wanted and then let the community use the AI director and mapping to their enjoyment. Nonetheless, a game still needs company support, fixes, tweaks, etc. You can't keep the community fired on nothing. An expansion would make more sense, building off the prior code, adding new stuff to feel fresh, dodging the patching concern, and still making money.

Best selling games last week on Steam:
#1 Left 4 Dead 2
#2 Left 4 Dead

and L4D2 looks like it will be the top selling game this week as well. I'll probably wait at least until it's under $30.

Valve Announces Left 4 Dead 2 Scavenge Mode

Scavenge mode challenges players to compete in round-based games of up to 8 players (Survivors vs. Infected). The Survivors must battle both the Infected and the clock as they collect gas cans to refuel a generator located in each map. Every can the Survivors pour into the generator scores their team a point and adds time to the clock.

On defense, the Infected team plays as the boss Infected (including the new Spitter, Jockey, and Charger). They must keep the Survivors from fueling the generator by attacking them, destroying the gas cans, or running out the clock. During a round, each team gets an opportunity to play both sides, with the round going to whichever team successfully delivers the most cans.

The demo is going to be part of "The Parish" campaign, it's going to have all the new boss zombies, and all the melee weapons.

"Those who pre-order the game (at participating retailers or via Steam) will obtain early access to the demo on October 27. The demo will then be made available to Xbox LIVE Gold members and all PC gamers on November 3. Then all Xbox LIVE members will obtain access to the demo on November 10."

I know my good computer won't be fixed by the 27th... Do I dare to pre-order and play on this piece of shit just to play it?
I'm gonna wait until Nov 3 when the demo comes out for everyone (well, all PC users). I'm not sure if/when I'll get the full game.

See, my biggest problem with L4D is if I play through the campaign mode once (all 5 scenarios) I get bored with sub-sequent play throughs unless I take a good month or so off. I really don't get into the whole "replay" value of the game. Maybe it'd be better with a few people I know, but I find myself wanting to play TF2 with the time.

Seeing what I've seen about L4D2, I think the same is going to hold true (one playthrough per month or so).

It's not necessarily about people you already know, but once you get a cluster of regulars, the game's replay value soars, and also becomes hilarious. I had a blast playing through just the old demo with Halforums people.

Later I found a group of guys I fell in with on L4D and we played two or three times a week for a while. Honestly, Team Fortress 2 was the same way for me. On random, I'd have some fun, but not nearly as much as when I had a regular server to go to, and the same people to play with. When that server vanished, I mostly stopped playing.

It's all about the Versus mode for me right now. It's still hard to win as infected, but it's much easier now that I've got some practice in.

Truth be told, I haven't played some of the maps outside of Versus mode. However, there are some very nice 3rd party maps going around. I recommend Death Aboard (has an awesome slanted area that takes place on a wrecked ship) and Dead Before Dawn (the final version is coming out soon and actually has a new line of Francis saying "I Hate Malls" that the makers received from Valve!)

Now that's something I might try out, some interesting "good" downloadable content.

Might check those out, thanks for the heads up Ash!
