So, last night while I was streaming CrazyDeviant's ill-fated attempt to attack Sanchobob's moonbase, the guys from XPA filled me in on an upcoming change in the next patch that has some pretty huge ramifications.

They're changing turret limits. The total number of turrets you can have will still be pretty much the same, but now they're organized into categories. From what he said, minigun and cannon turrets are now in the same limit group, as are pulse laser and plasma turrets, as are flak and homing missile turrets. Each turret category's limits are its constituents added together.

This means you could forego flak turrets in favor of six more homing missile turrets.

This. Is. Huge.

So where does artillery fall? In with rockets? Or is there a separate “siege” category?
Because where I see this making the biggest difference is in HV loadout.

Also: dangit I spent DAYS agonizing over efficient turret placement on my (much-delayed) base design, and now this is probably gonna throw one heckuva monkey spanner into things.

They did not specify. The discussion primarily was about CVs.

Huge but still worthless if a group such as they want to attack a base. What needs to happen is selective targeting. As in, in addition to be able to set your turrets to fire at say turrets or warp drives, they also have a hierarchy of targeting that goes something like SV -> CV -> HV or HV -> SV -> CV.

Well, it's huge on all sides. I foresee a lot of ships (and bases) that completely eschew flak in the future, because homing missiles are so much more useful.

I mean, really, if I had my druthers, I'd forego all other turrets in favor of having all homing missile turrets.

But yeah, this doesn't change the bases meta.

It's like I've always said, even back on renntech - the only secure base is an unfound base. Put it 30-40km out in space and hope it doesn't get found, because base defense is a pipe dream at this point. Especially if they do something to address the "invulnerable underground core" thing.

I’m also seeing people saying the new limit on artillery is 1, and the other categories might be going down from 6ea to 4ea, but there’s a lot of confusion as to whether box turrets count differently, whether the quantities are being reverted, it’s all a chaotic mess.

—Patrick

Hrm, if the turret limits go down... that might necessitate a wipe :/
Don’t think I don’t know it.
...even as I dream of the kind of chaos that could be sown by a CV packing 12xMinigun, 12xLaser, and 12xFlak. The opponent would never be able to see anything!

What? Eleon create a chaotic mess within 3 days of a major release? Never...

Server is updated to 8.5... in order to get the new content and address the new turret balances, I'll be doing a complete wipe with a new solar system and new planets.

Now I just need a week to build that solar system >_< But the old save is still up and running on the new version, for now.

Sooo, remember this preview video they posted?

I found them in game... and uh... suffice to say I'm a little underwhelmed.

THE HELL IS THIS (now linked because imgur is messing up again)

Are they marionettes? Suspended in place and unable to change their X/Y coordinates, their feet slipping ineffectually, flailing and slapping at the dance floor beneath them, unable to find purchase?

I didn't see that. Long weekend. All I saw was that the server was at 8.5 already.
8.5 is running, but on the old map. So none of the new POIs or monsters are in. Gotta have new planets with new yamls for that stuff. But the new turret limits are in effect, whatever they are exactly (I haven't had time to check).

I'm building a new map/game and I anticipate it will be done for the weekend. It's a very time consuming and tedious process with lots of yaml editing. But at least, this time, I'm fixing some of the problems that cropped up in the first alpha 8 map - The starters will be size 3 instead of 4, their resource nodes will be more abundant, bonanza too will be size 3 instead of 4, and I plan to have three full sets of every kind of planet - one set for each planet size (3, 4, and 5).

And I pray to god I blueprinted Gargantua station AFTER I set the thousands of devices to lock code 0000.

You still can blueprint it, right?
I think I might have to recore it as a regular structure, but maybe so. For some reason the game is really anal about letting admin structures/pois be blueprinted, even by admins. But yeah, good call.

Yes, Dave. We know how much you love the feeling of cracking open a fresh, new world.

So? I made so many mistakes the first time. Now I know better. I have an idea and a plan. RDR will rise again! Unless I name it something else. Then THAT will rise again!

I know.
I spent almost a month designing (and then redesigning) a base.
I found the perfect place to put it, in undisturbed territory and off the beaten path.
I contoured the land specifically so it would fit.
I saved for and bought a pair of teleporters.
And now the world will be wiped in under a week.

...oh well, can't wait to do it again. This was good MP practice, and now that I know better how things work (in MP), I can plan better how to go about things.

Also let's hope the mods continue to work. Otherwise Gas might be forced to open up his teleporter business again. Does anyone even use the /sort mod?

Maybe next time you should be less concerned with perfection such that it prevents you from playing the game :p you know the saying... don't let perfect be the enemy of good?

I used sort all the time - whenever I was reloading the constructor farms at our main bases, I would empty my personal inventory, pull everything out of the constructor, /sort, and put two stacks of all of the essentials back in, then rebalance everything and put excess materials back into their holding chests. It's just that it's not really all that useful for everyday tasks - how often do I need to find something badly enough in my inventory that I can't just scan through?

Name it "LBP" (little blue pill), so everyone will instantly know your ability to rise and rise again, and the staying power of the corp ;)

Hey you play your way, I'll play mine. I would've been out there almost a month earlier if it hadn't been for that meddling XBA.

Meh. Even before XPA, barely anybody was going out to PvP territory because RDR was the boogieman before XPA was.

Yay! They fixed Dancing npcs!

The Monkey Business club on Gargantua City's gonna be quite the happening spot, once I get it refitted! ;)

Progress on the new map is going pretty well. I've got Akua, Ningues, Celes, Bromalis, Trading Outpost, and Bonanza all done. Six sectors down... 22 to go.

Let us know before you run the wipe. At the potential expense of everyone's system resources, I'd love to see my super structure, final fallback base tested out by whomever is hungry.
