Rant VIII: The Reckoning

OK, so I'm a Belgian owl fan. Just posting this anon so that real life people who know my handle won't run into it.

I was just absent for 3 weeks due to a broken (just cracked, it turns out) wrist. In that time, my superior was to take over my job. Well, I mean, keep things running.
WELL NOPE.
Ok, fine, but surely he managed to keep things moving, just have people follow protocols we'd set up, follow procedures agreed upon with clients and suppliers and such.
WELL NOPE.
Maybe he noticed that I'm useful and some things run more smoothly when I'm there to pay attention and follow up on things.
WELL NOPE.
...At least he didn't actively try to sabotage me or get me fired?
WELL NOPE.

So, the management of the firm is made up of my boss, one other manager, and the CEO. The CEO outranks the other two, they're more-or-less on even footing.
My boss had actually drawn up half the paperwork to throw me out over some bogus claims. The other manager stood up for me and showed the CEO the claims to be complete fabrications. Or, more accurately, errors of my boss and his lackey, who's sadly part of my team, he tried to drop on my head. Well, that backfired. Turns out I've been saving my boss' ass! No kidding!
At the same time, the people in my team finally discovered proof of the long-held belief that the forementioned lackey made his own schedule...and everyone else's. Which people would probably accept, if it wasn't for the fact he hasn't worked a single day shift in the weekend (the busiest shift of the week), more of the nights in the weekend (the calmest and best paid shift of the week) than anyone else, hasn't worked on either Eid-ul-Adha or Id-al-Fitr in four years, never works the day his team plays, and miraculously has both an unlimited gas card and an unlimited phone card from work (which even I don't have!). Yeah, if you're going to make your team's work schedule, how about trying to be fair?
My boss also managed to...Oops...Forget to make invoices for over €800.000 (roughly a million dollars), this year alone. Since we work mainly with construction firms, those invoices are connected to work done on projects already finished, often with their balances totalled and accounts closed out - meaning some of our clients are furious because their books now turn out to be off by thousands of euros, and some flat-out refusing to pay.
All-in-all, the CEO came pretty close to firing my boss, but he's been kept on for the time being. Sadly, there's no trust whatsoever in the team towards him at the moment, and my boss still maintains it's all my fault - I turned the team against him, I've riled them all up, and I've somehow managed to manipulate the other manager into my pocket and made him look bad. Still, since the CEO - according to the other manager - literally said "it's with the Belgian Owl Guy, and you can take it or leave it", my job's pretty secure for now...Except I have a boss who's out for my blood, with one of my team members who's not just in his pocket but actively wants me out and briefs anything I say or do to him in the worst possible light, and most of this I've only learned through "you didn't hear this from me, hushhush" late night phone calls from the other manager - who I don't much trust either. I'm well aware he's painting everything in a light to indebt me to him and get me in "his camp", since he feels cheated and passed by - he's one of the founders of the company and my boss managed to get on the "same" level as him by manipulation and being good at playing office politics.

the atmosphere at my work is just splendid, let me assure you. My boss was sickeningly sweet and friendly and kind to me all day, making jokes, telling me how much I'd been missed, how I shouldn't work too hard on my first day back, etc etc.

I mean...I guess I should be glad someone stood up for me? And that I still have a job? But really, "stress" is an understatement at the moment, I can just barely function at the moment, and i should just have stayed home an extra week 'till things quieted down. Next week - when I'm supposed to be on a holiday - there's a big meeting between the CEO and my team and my boss...very strongly against my boss' wishes - he tried to veto the meeting, but the CEO pushed through because he wants honest and open opinions and different perspectives on how me and my boss work... And apparently, no-one bothered to invite me or keep me in the loop. I officially don't have a clue the meeting's taking place, again, I only know about it through hush hush back channels.

URGH.
Hypothetically speaking, if you were to find another job, what would happen to your current company?

Also, six figure disparities in invoices is probably a bad thing no matter where you are... maybe have that exit plan in place, just in case...

Me? Hmm, nothing special, really. He'd need to find someone to bully, I guess.
And we're lucky our company is under the umbrella of one of the biggest groups of the country to bankroll us, or we would be up a creek without a paddle already.

Huh. And I used to think I was bad about replying to emails. At least I read them.

Edit: This isn't a rant. Thought I was in the Random Crap thread.

Misclicks. Sigh.

So anyway, I'm very officially NOT invited to this meeting, because the CEO doesn't want strive/discussion/arguments between management in front of the troops.
Well, I wouldn't have to fight my boss every step of the way if he behaved like a normal human being?
Also, hey, thanks for saying I'm apparently part of "management" now.

We’re cat-free at the moment, And want to change that as soon as we’re able, and even thought about offering, but we’re still not able, so I am right there with you.

Blizzard pulled my meter and lines outta my house. Insurance "isn't sure" if I'm covered for that, they don't know my deductible since "it's the weekend", and this mysterious contractor they say will def call me has yet to do so. God damn it, I need to know if it's cheaper to hire my own guy or not! The power company says they'll need to shut off my power as well until it's fixed. If the power is off my phone line is basically gone because I get shit all cell phone reception down here.

Basically, I'm super frustrated and fuck insurance companies. 24 hour service my ass.

thats fucking nuts, how is your homeowners insurance NOT covering environmental storm damage!?

Maybe the city or provincial plow did it? That wouldn't be covered by homeowner insurance.

We had a bad blizzard once and I could see our lines hanging across the road and I called both the power and cable companies to tell them and then I called the city to warn them about it because after dark there would be no way for them to see it.

An hour later, after dark....the city truck drove into and ripped the line off and dragged it with them for a while.

Good times.

I hope that they can help you tomorrow and that someone with a clue calls you back.

Holy fucking fucker of fucks.
So, one of my eployees called in sick last Thursday. He was scheduled to work tonight - the night shift. I was on holiday, the sick call was taken by my boss.
Guess who didn't bother to alert anyone or to seek a replacement for this night? Yeah, you guessed it. And guess who was told on Monday at 10 am "oh hey, you fix this"?
So I get the fun part of calling all my people "hey, can you come in to work tonight for a full night shift?" - and all of their responses have been "why are you only calling now? We all knew he was sick since last week! Since I didn't get a call I assumed you found another solution, sorry, no can do!"

I finally found a solution, but man I was already pretty sure I was going to have a 22hour shift ahead of me. Guy saved my butt.

Well there goes about $300.

If I had time, and it wasn’t already a 6 year old machine, and I wasn’t already planning on replacing it within the next year (mostly because Apple should stop supporting it after high Sierra).

However, the deadline for this project is tomorrow, so I spent a lot of money at the local Apple store to get a machine that will hopefully last me for 6 more years.

It’s just painful. There’s never a good time for a computer to die.

I’ll decide later whether to pursue a repair and turn it into a kids computer.

I'm kind of surprised that they DID support it under High Sierra. I thought they were only going to support 2012 and newer, what with their focus on Metal.

Man. I need to find someone willing to work tonight, and all htree next nights of the weekend, 12h shifts. Someone is seriously and actively sabotaging not just my job, but the company. We'll get through this - somehow - but heads will fucking roll.
My boss is pissed planning duties were transferred to me. He fell sick when I asked him about vacations and off days for January. I made a shift schedule, everyone signed off on it, sent it out...Got called out for one shift for his little buddy he didn't want to do. Solved that...Now his buddy is out sick, too. And he was scheduled to wrok the night shift all weekend. And 4 more shifts during the two weeks to come. With two other people out after a surgery, one leaving the company the 31st, and one on paternity leave, I'm completely out of options.
Fuck him, fuck his minion, and fuck it all. I'll probably be working Christmas night if I can't find another solution.

I've had it up to....you know, you can't seem e but guess where I'm ponting, here with all this shit. Things will change and get better or I'm out - and that's also the message I'm going to give the CEO. My boss wants to actively sabotage me and is taking the whole company down along with it. I'm willing to put up with a lot but it's really coming to a head now.

Also, I'm stressed way the fuck out.

It has what was, at the time, a reasonably high end discrete graphics chip. I did my first OpenCL programming on it, and it was that project that paid for that laptop in the first place. The final project didn't use OpenCL, but it was something I had to test for the client.

That said, they didn't drop any models between Sierra and High Sierra. Supports some 2009 models as well. I'm pretty sure the next revision of OSX would drop it, though.

The schedule's been fixed. There are a couple of people with 50+ hours of overtime this month, the CEO had to throw some bonuses around, I'm completely drained and I didn't get a lick of other work done, but it's finished. Sigh.

And trust me, the CEO knows who did the heavy lifting.
Hah! Yes, the "other" manager who put the feather on his hat.
I mean, yes, I probably scored some goodwill, too, but he got the praise. Because I still haven't quite mastered the whole "standing up for myself without looking like an asshole"thing.

My honest recommendation is to stand up for yourself and not worry about coming off like an asshole. The smoother delivery will come with practice, and ruffling some feathers in the mean time is better than getting treated like a doormat.

I got to spend Christmas with my parents. Everything was going fine. Dad is 89, still getting around well. He has not used his cane or walker in many weeks. Says that he is feeling better... Then last night Mom told me that their in home nurse said that they really need to think about finding a hospice for him soon.

Oh God that was such a whiplash moment.
