[PC Game] Halforums House: Rimworld - the story thread

The fact of the matter is, most people's melee skill stays pretty much where it starts.
I will say, if I'd known ahead of time that you were NOT planning on maximizing the colonists' potentials, I may have allocated my points differently.

I didn't "plan" anything :p and furthermore, "maximizing" melee potential would require way too much micromanagement, to put it lightly.

What I did was basically create the facilities, then tweak everyone's job assigments so that they'd try to do things they were passionate about first. After that, it was up to everyone to figure it out for themselves.

Sometimes that has unexpected results. For example, I didn't TELL Keltsy be a great white hunter, and she has no interest whatsoever in shooting, but damn if she hasn't gained SO many levels in it.[DOUBLEPOST=1502466861,1502466812][/DOUBLEPOST]
More due to the associated risks, I assume.

That and there's no automatic job that raises it. Hunting raises shooting. Dealing with prisoners raises social. Etc etc.

But there's no "job" that requires/raises melee.

Snap one pirate's neck, and it opened a floodgate of insatiable bloodlust. Just ask the chickens.

I vote nay on chipping Moffa. We're not certain enough it'd help at this point - right?
I'm not sure what you mean "not certain it would help." Barring an accident during surgery, implanting Moffa with an AI chip would definitely restore him to 100% function. As it stands, he's at 40% - which basically precludes him from being trusted to do anything other than feed himself and haul items (and both of those extremely slowly). Implanting the chip would return him to full productivity as a hunter, builder, and miner (in fact, one of the best miners we have - 18 skill).

The issue is, to build the chip he needs would consume enough uranium to build 30 crytposleep pods on the ship (150 of the 250 we have on hand).

Now, the planetkiller is still 7 years out, so it's extremely possible we'll replace the uranium during that time and more. But not guaranteed. However, as it stands... without the chip implantation, it'd almost be better to go ahead and put him in cryptosleep now, because he's only consuming resources without productivity and his quality of life could be classified as "barely tolerable."

Well... there IS... another option.

HALFORUMS HOUSE:RIMWORLD - Year 5503, part 3 - Fall

Septober 1, 5503 - Foodstores are not where they should be for the approaching winter. A cotton field is repurposed to rice. After a series of frustrating days, Moffa enters a ship cryptosleep pod and goes into suspended animation to wait for either an AI chip implant, or for the ship to leave. Ashburner goes on a weed smoking binge.

Sept 2 - Gas, Thynne, Charon, Terrik and SpecialKO pile back into the pods to check out another potential resource find. The overabundance of armament turns out to be overkill, as there's nothing there but minerals and animals - not even an "ancient danger" crypt. Cheesy and Cog are sent immediately after the area is confirmed secure, to help mine the resources. Ako and Sir stage a prison break. They split up, and Akio (Susy's father) runs afoul of Frank, who blasts him. Sir (Patrthom's father) manages to sneak out a back door in the commotion. Somehow that back door was left unlocked... an inside job?! Since Akio attacked Frank (and beat up a husky puppy!) on his way, instead of going out quietly like Sir did, he is judged guilty and executed. Jun performs the medical execution as humanely as possible. Susy still hates her now, though. The negative vibes are too much for Ashburner, man, and he like, goes on another weed smoking binge. Somebody has let the polar bear out of its room. Akio is buried next to Veniamin Pitt.

Sept 3 - Silence, Celt Z's muffalo, gets struck by lightning during a thunderstorm. Fortunately Kags is nearby to help extinguish the flames, and Silence is then anesthetized and his burns are treated by Susy. SpecialKO returns home via transport pod, followed soon after by Terrik - they being the least useful in a mining situation. Jwhouk finally tames that razzafrazzin bear. As Squidley doesn't have the requisite animal skill to handle a bear, Emrys is made her master. It's not set in stone, though - the bear has yet to form any bonds with anyone.

Pictured: I bet that tingles

Sept 4 - Thynne is sent home from the mining camp. Now it's just Gas, Cheesy, Charon and Cog. Cheesy and Cog are showing signs of stress, so Gas spends some time constructing objects to try to make them feel more comfortable. Bubble and Noblhippy get married in the rose garden. Cheesy's stress levels cause him to spend the rest of the day moping around.

Sept 5 - A flash electrical storm sets many wildfires and imperils the northern power conduit. Many colonists spend the entire day fighting the blaze. A trade caravan comes through with a large number of relatives in it. Seems a great many of the ship's survivors fell in with the Alliance of (indecipherable). It is made sure that the next supply pod sent to the mining camp includes some smokeleaf joints to take the edge off for certain people.

Pictured: That's a lot of relatives

Sept 6 - A large sapper raid arrives from the southeast - and Sir is with them, and he's also brought Patrthom's mother, Aletta. Seems there's hard feelings for keeping him locked up for 2 years. The sappers try digging through a corner where there are no defensive structures on the inside, and stay too close to the wall for mortars. A smaller part of the defensive force stays where they are digging while the larger part heads out to flank them. Sir is shot dead in the first volley - by who else? Celt Z. A pirate fires a rocket poing blank at Klew's arctic wolf, Killer, which kills the pirate and the wolf both. When the pirates break through the wall, a well-timed pincer move by the defenders catches them and smashes their ranks. Aletta is also killed. The most serious injury on our side (aside from a dead pet wolf) is Null - who loses a toe. Any surviving downed pirates are executed immediately on the battlefield. Patrthom's parents are buried with the others.

Pictured: That is also a lot of relatives

Sept 7 - Bellboy, Null's labrador, gets an infection from a wound sustained the day before. As the infection is in a leg that is already missing the paw, it's decided to amputate the entire leg and replace it with a bionic animal leg. But a solar flare knocks out all the electricity, so it will have to wait a day. Late that night, Gas is finally the last colonist to return from the mining camp.

Sept 8 - Jun installs Bellboy's bionic leg - and just in time - that infection was getting out of hand. Jwhouk is slighted by Squidley and a fight breaks out. Squidley finds the fight cathartic, but it pisses off Jwhouk even more. Ashburner reacts with another pot binge.

Pictured: Jwhouk v. Squidley

Sept 9 - With the nights getting colder, the dusters and cowboy hats are traded back out for Parkas and Tuques.

Sept 10 - A pack of alphabeavers goes violent, and attacks Gryfter, then Wasabi. Dirona, Patrthom and Squidley save them, and no important limbs are lost.

Pictured: Drowning in beavers

Sept 12 - Nothing bad has happened for a couple days. Ashburner can't take the suspense, and goes on a pot smoking binge.

Pictured: Ashburner happily tending to his smokeleaf crop

Sept 15 - The last harvest of the fall is a bumper crop. There's now plenty of food to make it through the winter, even if hunting is scarce.

Wait, why am *I* angry at PatrThom?
I didn't specifically mention it (because it got buried in all the other stuff happening and I didn't note it down), but I screenshotted it - remember the screenshot showing how many of the pirates in the raid when Sir came back with his wife? One of those relatives was your father. Looks like Patr was the one to get the killshot on him. Patr himself is mad at Celt Z for killing his father (but only to -24 because they were becoming friends before it happened) and utterly hates BErt for killing his mother. Denbrott's mother And Gryfter's great-grandmother were also in the raiding party but were some of the few who escaped. Celt Z also killed Krisken's grandfather, but apparently Krisken didn't like his grandfather enough to counter her pretty permabuff.

The ship I used in the teaser had a crew of 30,000... soo... probably ALL our families :D
Is it the original code or a mod that is throwing so many relatives at us? Because it's getting a bit off-putting and taking me out of the story. I know, "real world logic" and all that. But it's starting to show why this is still in alpha after all this time.

The game itself automatically seeds relatives all over the planet.

Keep in mind as well that the game itself doesn't actually know what the starting scenario/story is per say, most of it is just from Gas's mind.
