Video Game News and Miscellany

The Secret World relaunching/rebranding as Secret World Legends on Steam, with a new progression system, new starting experience, and new combat engine.

Right now, the normal MMO TSW will keep going as is but you can link your Funcom account to this and you'll be able to transfer purchased stuff to the new system. Characters will not be transferable between the two systems. You can apply for the beta here.

I'm... REALLY pissed that I'm going to lose my characters that I've spent years working on, even if this could make the game more accessible to people.

Heroes of the Storm, my moba of choice, is changing how progression and rewards work. They're adding overwatch style loot boxes that you occasionally earn by playing, and of course can choose to buy with real money if you want to gamble. They're also adding in tons of shit that no one wants, like emojis and sprays, so they have things to dilute what's in those boxes.

This is replacing the current model of just buy whatever cosmetic you want. This is good for free to play players that never want to spend a dime, as they can just grind away at the game and get random stuff, but if there's a specific skin you want, you can no longer just drop five bucks to have it, you have to gamble with boxes, and I hate that shit.

Loot box gambling is like the number one way on how to get me to not want to touch something.

Was it an especially bad port? From what I've seen it looked like a tremendously fun game.

Ubisoft seems like it needs to get its shit together, even when it makes a solid game.
After a quick perusal of the reviews (as I don't own it and haven't played it, because UPlay)...

The number one complaint seems to be connectivity issues. Apparently it's just gotten worse and worse since launch. Exploit bugs have cropped up without being addressed. There's also been a lot of griping about the rate at which one gains in-game currency without applying real-world currency.

There's also the fact that the main game mode that ubisoft heavily pushes, and thus the game mode everyone plays, is TERRIBLE. Dominion is the mode they push, which is 4v4, but the game is really only balanced around 1v1 and 2v2. Dominion also adds lots of pickups that can gaurantee whoever spawns near one wins.

In 1v1 and 2v2, it's actually a very good fighting game, complete with fighting game usability such as attack frames and recovery times. But they wanted to hide its fighting-game nature.

Also, the peer to peer connectivity sucks total ass. If the game had actual servers it would be a hell of a lot better.

Double Fine is doing another Amnesia Fortnight, where each member on their team pitch ideas for games. Through voting on Humble Bundle, the 4 winners then split the studio up into separate teams to develop a working prototype.

I've always been a fan of the Amnesia Fortnight idea. I always wished more developers would do something like this because it might give even big name studios a chance to hear unique pitches that could turn into new, innovative games. One of DF's earliest Amnesia Fortnights gave us two games I loved a lot: Costume Quest and Stacked. While working on Broken Age, they did another Amnesia Fortnight. I'd wished some of those prototypes had been made into full games: Steed, Mnemonic, and Dear Leader.

So, Gearbox, not happy with just fucking over people who bought Bulletstorm the first time has decided to make the digital collector's edition only available through G2A. The company most well known for facilitating mass credit card fraud, charging users for protection against the mass fraud they facilitate, lying about protecting devs from mass fraud, etc. A company so renowned for their shittiness, that no e-sport league will allow sponsorships by them. A company that's done more direct financial harm to indie devs than any amount of game pirating could hope to accomplish.

Gearbox is such a piece of shit company.

Here's some examples of G2A's bullshittery.

What Gearbox is doing with Bulletstorm is fucking baffling. The game bombed the first time it was out. To the point the devs wouldn't even bother stripping out the GFW bullshit that makes it nigh unplayable on PC to this day. Why are they releasing it at full price again (saying fuck you to the people who bought it the first time, something I'm fucking bitter about) and not only that, but releasing an expensive collector's edition with physical goods through what is basically a money laundering website for Russian gangsters.

What the fuck is wrong with them? As if Randy Pitchford could be more of a piece of shit.

Speaking of dick killing parties...

Bulletstorm's a good game, but it's not good enough to have to deal with all that bullshit.

There are a lot of people who have worked with G2A, learned more about their business, and made the choice to discontinue the partnership. There are also a lot of people who have worked with them, learned more about them, and made the decision that the money they were being offered was worth continuing the partnership.

There are a lot fewer people who not only decided after these things were common knowledge that it was a partnership they wanted, but took the extra step of having an exclusive distribution agreement with them. It takes a certain kind of disconnect and disinterest in the well-being of customers - especially when it's apparently a full-price rerelease of a game that wasn't a success in the first place.

"Gearbox Publishing heard loud and clear the concerns voiced by John “TotalBiscuit” Bain. Gearbox was then provided with a lot of documentation on the subject, after which John was gracious enough to spend time across the last two days with our head of publishing Steve Gibson to put together a proposal and a deadline for G2A to act upon.

· Before Bulletstorm Steam launch, G2A makes a public commitment to this: Within 30 days, G2A Shield (aka, customer fraud protection) is made free instead of a separate paid subscription service within terms offered by other major marketplaces. All customers who spend money deserve fraud protection from a storefront. To that end, all existing G2A Shield customers are notified by April 14th that fraud protection services are now free and they will no longer be charged for this.

· Before Bulletstorm Steam launch, G2A makes a public commitment to this: Within 90 days, G2A will open up a web service or API to certified developers and publishers to search for and flag for immediate removal, keys that are fraudulent. This access will be free of charge and will not require payment by the content holders.

· Before Bulletstorm Steam launch, G2A makes a public commitment to this: Within 60 days implement throttling for non-certified developers and publishers at the title, userid, and account payable levels for a fraud flagging process. This is to protect content providers from having large quantities of stolen goods flipped on G2A before they can be flagged.

· Before Bulletstorm Steam launch, G2A makes a public commitment to this: Within 30 days, G2A restructures its payment system so that customers who wish to buy and sell legitimate keys are given a clear, simple fee-structure that is easy to understand and contains no hidden or obfuscated charges. Join the ranks of other major marketplaces.

Gearbox Publishing won’t support a marketplace that is unwilling to make these commitments and execute on them."

My HOTTAKETM, Gearbox was offered a sweet deal by G2A, knew exactly what G2A was about but thought the risks were worth it (because if they didn't, they are the biggest incompetents that ever lived...well, it's Gearbox), got called out on this shit and are now trying to look like the good guys by making demands they know G2A will never adhere to and getting G2A to back out of the deal.

Oh, and holding a sequel to Bulletstorm hostage under the excuse that they'll see how well the remaster does first.

Fuck Gearbox.

Holy fucking shit, noted liar and buck passer Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, is saying that the Bulletstorm dev People May Fly is the one that set up the deal with G2A. You know, something devs NEVER EVER DO. The publishers are the ones that set up these kinds of deals. He claims to have only heard of this deal very recently.

He's like Trump in video game publisher form. Nothing is ever Gearbox's fault.

B1 and B2 for WiiU was really good IMO. Glad to see it get a bigger audience. And for those who didn't own a WiiU, I can see why you'd like to have a port. I wonder what Sega's deal was with Nintendo to put it on the WiiU exclusively and how long it lasts for?
Nintendo funded Platinum making Bayonetta 2, so I doubt it will see a release anywhere else. It might get a switch port.

Cosmic Star Heroine came out today too!

Holy fuck what a time to be a gamer.

It's Zeboyd Games' love letters to Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star.

[DOUBLEPOST=1491956622,1491956249][/DOUBLEPOST]Oh, and Planescape Remastered too.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.

Well, I can plainly see the chrono trigger influences, but I'm curious, what's the Phantasy Star connection? Just the Sword'n'Science sci-fi setting, or is there something else?[DOUBLEPOST=1491957031][/DOUBLEPOST]Oh, and hey, it's also 20% of on steam until April 18th (bringing it down to a super-affordable $12). Sounds like a buy to me.
