Binge-watched Farmed and Dangerous on Hulu. It's a satire on the major agribusinesses, with a pretty funny premise involving exploding cows. I thought the humor was pretty sharp. This one also includes a few fake commercials during the breaks, and they run a Ben and Jerry's "Happy Cows" ad that just fits in wonderfully. Worth watching.

After hearing all the hullaballoo about True Detective, I checked out the first episode. Really good show, judging from this. Holy hell, McConaughey is almost unrecognizable in this role. His character reminds me a little bit of BBC's Sherlock. Not in a bad way, just similarities in terms of high-functioning socio-paths.

The pacing is a little slow, though that might also be because I'm super tired and hitting the sack soon. Also found a lot of the accents hard to follow. I'd probably enjoy this more with subtitles

Still, it's enough that I'll watch the next episode tomorrow.

The show is glacial slow compared to most other series, but it's worth the attention. Absolutely worth the attention.

Yes! One of us! One of us!

And yes, this is on of Academy Award Winner Matthew Mchonaughey and his Academy Award Winning Abs' best roles. The dude just falls into this character. And I could watch Woody Harrelson chew the scenery all day.

I dunno if you're using this differently than me, but I usually associate "chew the scenery" with bad over-acting, and I think what Woody does with the role is pretty great and subtle and while McC is going to win the Emmy, no question, in any other year Woody would have a shot too.

I've started watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I can't get into it. It's well-written but those characters are terrible, terrible people.

If you've just started and think they're terrible, I hate to break it to you but they get much, much worse as time goes on.

I've not watched the performance in question, but I don't think "chew the scenery" is in and of itself indicative of "bad," just a performance that is extremely melodramatic. It can be used endearingly as well as negatively. Corroboration

I can't speak for the second part, but I don't think I have ever found it funny.
Also, it invented the terms "going commando" and "Friend zone."

And what can I say, different strokes for different folks. I can't stand Dr. Who. World keeps spinnin'.

If that's where those two terms came from, my new life goal is to create time travel and prevent the show from ever happening.

Also, it's Doctor Who. Full word, not abbreviation.

Guess I'm just bitter because my girlfriend loves watching it. If I could just ignore it I doubt I'd really care.

Getting back to Community, that was an okay episode. Glad to see Abed one-off girl meeting has actually turned into something. Though I feel bad for not knowing the movie reference at the end. Also, who was the guy at the end, buying the books? I feel like his appearance was supposed to mean something but I didn't recognize him.

Finally, whatever happened to that Apple company they mentioned at the end? Kind of an obscure 90s reference, I guess. Probably not a company that went anywhere.

Well, Rachel's not really a one-off since this is the 3rd episode she been in. She doesn't fill the void Troy left, but she seems seems like a nice fit for Abed. Plus, I kinds like that Abed's dating Envy Adams because I really liked Scott Pilgrim.

Do you mean you didn't recognize the husband and wife talking about his role in the game Abed and Annie were playing, or a different movie reference?

I hope every take of the Dean's rap is included on an outtakes reel. I wouldn't be surprised if there were ad-libs each time. Gillian's face looks like she's biting her cheeks from laughing.

What?

I'm not knocking Friends, but there have been A LOT of ensemble sitcoms in the past 50 years.
I might be wrong. But most of the ones I remember previous to that were either single protagonist or comedy duos. I suppose it also depends on whether you consider shows like full house to be ensemble or just the story of three brothers and some supporting cast, or if the winslows or cosbys are an ensemble (which I don't consider them to be).

Friends was the first sitcom to be about young group of people that did not have old neighbors dropping by to try to bring in the "CBS" demographic. So it was a pure youth ensemble. So it is like Threes Company without the Ropers, Chico without the Man, Alice without Mel...

I used to use the term going commando when I was in college. And Friends did not premier until after I graduated.

Cheers? Taxi?

Both of these had one or two central characters the others were based around. Sam Malone. Alex Rieger and one or two others. I suppose it depends on if you call 3 people an ensemble.[DOUBLEPOST=1394810479,1394810387][/DOUBLEPOST]
Yup, M.A.S.H, Barney Miller, Cheers, Taxi, SOAP..... Friends was not a pioneer of ensemble sitcoms.
MASH (the TV show at least) was definitely The Hawkeye Pierce Show. Didn't watch much Barney Miller so I can't comment there...

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Those shows I mentioned all had characters who got the spotlight in different episodes. Not every episode of M.A.S.H centered on Hawkeye nor every ep of Taxi focused on Alex unlike say the Lucy Show where ever ep is centered on her activities. Tons of them focused on the other characters in the..... wait for it... ensemble.

I would also like to add WKRP in Cincinnati to my list of sitcoms that had an ensemble before Friends.
