Finally got my hip pain diagnosed after 3 years: SEVERE arthritis, practically no cartilage; bone-on-bone over 2/3rds of the joint. Will need hip replacement surgery to fix but replacement parts only last 15 years so i'm too young for that right now. HOORAY!

Wait - they won't perform hip replacement because you're too young?

I've never heard of this. Let's consult the oracle!

Huh.

Looks like you can get one, but you'll have to advocate for it, and getting insurance to pay for it can be difficult. See if you can find out exactly what your insurance company requires before they'll pay for a hip replacement.

This form (and the related forum) may help you convince your existing doctor to act, if you don't want to start searching for a more proactive physician:

they didnt have a problem DOING it (I didnt check with insurance yet - that's a good point) it was just the fact that I would likely need multiple ones in my life, and each one is more invasive than the next. So for now it's cortisone and PT and if it doesn't respond to any of that with added mobility (seriously, i can't put a sock on my right foot) then we would proceed to surgery. I would like to assume that with all of that done, that insurance would then cover it, but that's probably being too optimistic.

Yeah, I think your doctor has to use one of those standard hip score disability methods and you'd have to have a high disability before the insurance will pay for it. That said, if you ask what your insurance requires (what scoring method they use and what their line in the sand is) then you can certainly take more control of the process.

But balancing quality of life is hard either way. I'd spend a lot of time talking it over with others who've gone through it, particularly those who've waited to do theirs, and those who've replaced the same part more than once.

Thanks for all the tips! I have known several older fellows who have had it done and said it's an amazing difference. If it were up to me I'd just get the surgery done now and hope that in the 15-20 years before the replacement breaks down that medical technology would increase to where I can just have my brain implanted in a gorilla.

My uncle had the surgery once when he was younger and just now again recently. His first replacement hip lasted far longer than he was told it would. I know that everyone’s mileage will vary, but I have a feeling that they have to tell you the minimum time on them, not the maximum.

Speaking as someone living in huge amounts of pain with no way to fix it, if there is a way to make yours more manageable, I would highly recommend going for it now. You need to consider your quality of life while you wait.

I know, chibi anime girl, I know. Even when I try to go to bed early, I end up tossing and turning and then turning on the TV. I'm starting to feel like I've actually been bludgeoned. That's never a good sign.

I was actually going to post the animated version and tag you in it.
...but it's better when you admit it yourself.
I know that *I* stay up faaaar to late, but I have decades of practice and also me staying up late doesn't affect you at your job.

13yr-old me learned a lot from that book.
Which I pulled off the shelf in my 7th grade English class, btw.

I never finished it. I don't know why I picked it up in the first place, knowing that Heinlein's late works are utter garbage. 7th grade me would've liked it, I'm sure.

I don't blame you. A lot of Heinlein is 85% interesting story and then 15% "Crap! Isn't that due next week?"

--Patrick
For me, it's 40% "Man, this guy can really build a world with interesting characters," 30% "These are some political ideologies I could really get on board with," and 30% "Ok, this guy is just the dirtiest, horniest, woman-hatiest old goat what ever sat at a typewriter."

Every author/webcartoonist/artist eventually gets to the point where they try to sneak their personal fetish(es) into their work.

That's on my bookshelf here, never finished it either. Prior to this all I had read was Starship Troopers and Stranger in a Strange Land... It was quite a disappointment.
The only good Heinlein is a young Heinlein.

I really liked Space Cadet, Tunnel in the Sky, and Spaceship Galileo, for example.

To use Gas's words, they're like "80% "Man, this guy can really build a world with interesting characters," 15% "These are some political ideologies [@GasBandit] could really get on board with," and 5% "Ok, this guy is just the dirtiest, horniest, woman-hatiest old goat what ever sat at a typewriter.""

Try The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. It's basically libertarian porn :D
Will do. I read the The Man Who Sold The Moon short story collection late last year, that was probably my favorite out of that used book bundle (or maybe second to Starburst).

If you're going through Heinlein's work, you really should get out before the incest starts.
I'm pretty much desensitized to that. Reading Ada or Ardor as a teenager kinda burns you out, yannow?
