It's perfectly acceptable in English to give someone what amounts to an honorary title of "uncle" even when they are not a blood relative, assuming they are still an integral part of your family.

--Patrick
He's talking about the fact that, officially, only siblings of your direct ancestors are considered aunts and uncles.

But, yeah, no one will bat an eye if you call one of your great-uncle's kids "uncle". Hell, in my experience most people don't even know the official usage when iot comes to those cases.

IIRC, there is a distinction between -5 (which is not “(implied zero) minus five,” but rather an unary operator meaning “take the opposite of five”) and ⁻5 (“negative five”), where the first is considered an immediate function (“take the opposite of this value and proceed) but the second is an inherent quality (“this constant is negative.”)
Yeah, and if the notation ⁻5 was more common i'd have no issue with -5 being considered to resolve like that for a power.

But as it stands, taking it as a negativ integer at power is simply the more logical way to do it.

If you're going to need to use brackets to say what it does, the default should be to use them as -(5)^2.

In July the wife and I are taking a trip to Gulf Shores, AL. Yes, we're vacationing in Alabama. Weird, I know. But since I no longer work for the University and don't get my July 1st huge bonus check, I've got to work my ass off to have the money to go. So I made a spreadsheet.

1648269279235.png

Here's how to read it. The left side shows my dates and hours that I plan to work. My normal work week is either 3 or 4 12.5 hour shifts. On my off weekdays, however, I will be working 8 hours. This means that (barring some abnormality) I will be working either 61.5 hours a week or 66. This week due to leaving early to help a stranded wife work on her truck I worked "only" 59 hours. In two weeks I will be taking a day off because of a DJ gig so I will be working only 53.5 hours.

The right side is the pay table where I'm tracking the money I'm going to be making. I'm doing my best to keep the final number over $7000. All hotels are already paid for so that $7000 will be used for gas, food, and fun stuff. And yes, Pat, I know I used Actual OT hours twice. I had changed the first two Actuals to Estimated but didn't save so here we are. Too lazy to change it. Note that the Takehome is what I SHOULD make after taxes & insurance. First paycheck I was off $16.41. Damn it. I found I was truncating my percentages and have now built them in for more decimal places. Hope that takes care of my issue.

Don't know why I really posted this. I'm just kind of proud of this stupid little spreadsheet. I know it's nothing special but it looks nice.

Dont you know, all old european cities look the same? Located next to a river, big church in the middle, cobblestone pavement and winding small roads. They all have a hipster/bohemiean quarter and on the other side is the financial highrise district.
Bruges doesn't have a highrise financial district.

Otherwise, yeah.

The hotel I booked canceled last minute, since they werent finished with their renovations, luckily the website that i used to make the reservation gave us a new and better hotel. 5 stars instead of 4 stars. I could tell, that they would have prefered if I canceled the whole thing so they didnt have to pay the difference but I told them that they also would have to reimburse me for the transportation and opera tickets.

WTF is going on at the Oscars?

Link in case of embed fail

Will Smith appears to have punched/slapped Chris Rock over jokes about Jada Pinkett Smith being bald.
Just came to post this lol. I didnt hear the joke , but I guess Chris Rock said something about Jada Smith preparing for GI Jane 2, but she has a medical condition that made her lose her hair and Will Smith didn’t appreciate the joke.

Just coming to post this! Wild shit, man!

I see Will's point but DAMN.

Also, YouTube ad since Twitter is being a butt to me at least.

And Will Smith just won Best Actor, so now we know…the secret to winning an Oscar is to physically assault Chris Rock
Well that's going to become an awkward new Oscar tradition, every Best Actor nominee taking turns punching Chris Rock on stage.

You know what? The more I think about it, the more I support Will. I mean, I'm all for jokes and really nothing is off limits, but you really gotta think these things through when you are in front of a person with a medical condition that obviously makes them self-aware or uncomfortable. And for Chris to take that potshot was cruel.

To quote Chris Rock 25 years ago -

"I ain't sayin' he shoulda done that... but I understand."

Billy Murray should run over and punch him right now

In non-violence Oscar talk I’m 3 of 4 in my predictions and I aint seen none of these lol. I’m worried about my guess that West Side Story wins best picture because Dune has been winning every damn thing.

EDIT: CODA wins best picture. well that was unexpected

I haven't watched the whole incident so I don't know how much truth is in it. There are comments saying you can see Will laughing at the joke at first but Jada looked pissed.

When he wins his award later that night, he gives an emotional speech. It was sort of a ramble, but he clearly was referencing the punching incident earlier that night. Anyway, he talks about how hard it is to be an actor, and how people will sometimes say something horrible but you are expected to just laugh along without showing how much it bothers you. I think that’s his way of saying he was trying to laugh it off, but he just couldn’t.

EDIT: Found the quote!

Looked to me like his genuine reaction was to laugh, and Jada did as well, until maybe her mind caught up with her and she remembered the illness that causes her alopecia. Then it cuts back to Chris for a few seconds at which point Will begins to approach. Then the slap.

I imagine he laughed, caught he shouldn't have based on Jada's reaction, then over compensated. He's also likely still sore from the interview they gave awhile back that got turned into a joke at their expense, likely feeling the need to defend her to make a show of their bond.

Still doesn't justify walking up and clocking him, especially on live TV.

For him to not have been escorted out and then allowed to accept his win afterwards is pretty crazy to me as well.
