I'm certainly not a feline expert, and I'm too lazy to google, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that cats are mimics. They learn to mimic prey noises like bird chirps. I think the meow sound we associate with cats is actually them trying to mimic us.

Speculation is that the "meow" sound is supposedly neoteny, a sound cats usually stop doing when they grow up in the wild but keep when they grow up with us.
Other people think they might be mimicking the sounds of other animals so that other nearby predators won't home in on the noise and come to investigate.
