[TV] Talk about the last TV you watched, the catchall thread

HIMYM Finale.

I liked it.

Having had to listen to my roommates complaining over the last serveral years about Ted being hung up on Robin, I can safely say that it didn't come out of nowhere.

Fun fact, Kevin Conroy played the Batman of Zur-En-Arh! Whose secret identity was actually one of the better Clark Kents I've seen.
Kevin Conroy remains my favorite Batman to this day. Perfect balance of Bruce Wayne AND Batman, and all he needed was his voice. (Take notes, Bale!)

Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge
I don't know how many of you are aware that this show exists, but I highly recommend looking it up if not. It's a lot like Face-Off where a group of contestants with special effects backgrounds attempt to win the crown. In this case the crown is a year contract with the Jim Henson team in their creature shop. So far the two episodes that have aired have resulted in some pretty amazing work from the contestants. The most recent episode saw them creating 3 all new Skeksis creatures, inspired by the Dark Crystal.

I watched the first episode, and I do like it. I'm hoping there's less whiny bullshit from that team that made the boring fish monster in the following shows, or that one/both get the boot fast. I love that there's no reality TV junk involved in FaceOff; it's all about the creativity and the process of making the monsters. I want CS Challenge to feel like that too.

Community felt like a love letter to my childhood tonight. It was great. Even if it was the same schtick they've used several times (which they lampshaded).

GO JOEBRA! FIND OUT WHAT BOOBIES LOOK LIKE!

Something about that post Gas reminds me of the Happy Days where Ralph and Potsie find the dirty magazine...

"WOW! Could you imagine what she would look like with a sweater on?"

Heh, actually I do prefer my pinups to leave a teensy little something to the imagination - like Piers Anthony said in the apprentice adept series, to put the right clothing on a woman creates mysteries where previously there was nothing hidden.

Of course, I'm rather the opposite when it comes to actual porn.

That man had an unhealthy obsession with panties. Or he did in the Xanth series, anyway.

Heh, Xanth. Well, be that as it may, Anthony was a step back toward a healthy mind after reading some of Heinlein's later works.

If you want to have a positive opinion of Heinlein, read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Starship Troopers, and then just stop. Don't read aaaaanything else.

Yeah, I could have done without reading the story of the man who traveled back in time to sleep with his own mother (after feeling her up at an amusement park full of people), or the mother who caught her son and daughter having sex, and responded by stripping down and getting into bed with them.

Heinlein was more than a little messed up.

Though, one of the Xanth novels did have two teenage characters groping each other through a hole in a prison wall while they had been jailed by the evil villain.

Ah yes, "Time Enough for Love." Yeah, that one was out there. Even before he went back in time and slept with his own mother, he (at the age of untold hundreds of years) slept with teenage twin female version clones of himself. Is that incest, or masturbation?

So tonight's Grimm was pretty damn good. 100% plot arc advancement, no filler. Even important Grimm-type-knowledge (we learn how Wesen detect Grimms and how to prevent it in a surprisingly straightforward manner).

So has Grimm ever actually gotten better? Or is still the pre-destined hero tracking down people who can sprout lumps out of their heads?

There's actually an overarching plot. There's still "monster of the week" filler most weeks, but there's both a major and minor arc being interwoven amongst them. Each episode usually has 3 elements... the "this week's new Wesen" element, the "upcoming wedding" element, and the "macguffin baby" arc. Until recently it's advanced rather slowly, actually, but this season's really picked up the pace. There wasn't even a Wesen-of-the-week this week.

It's worth it to watch them in order.

And boobies. Seriously crosses the line into fanfic territory in more than a few spots.

My first Heinlein was "I Will Fear No Evil," which I pulled off the shelf of my English class in 7th grade. I didn't find it all that shocking, and thought it was an interesting premise, though I did think the story coherency started to fall apart near the end*.
If you're looking for additional PG-rated Heinlein, you might add "The Number of the Beast" to that list.

*A habit Heinlein seemed to frequently have.

I admit its not absolutely terrible but its not the best sequel series I've ever seen. Also the Xiaolin Showdowns are weird now, in the old show when they decide the game its a game that actually exists like basketball, king of the mountain, or hell even truth or dare. In this show they just say something like "Clown World" and they know the damn rules for it off the bat! Though most of the time the rules are "first person to touch the glowing thingy wins" so I guess the name of the game doesn't matter.

The old show did a bit of this too. They could make up a game on the spot and it would count. My favorite was definitely the time that Omi had to get a class of water through a desert without spilling a drop... so he drinks it and runs the rest of the course.

Fair point, but its mostly the not explaining the rules that bugs me. Though after rewatching some of the show I see its only certain episodes where they just say the name of the game. Still annoying, but not terrible in retrospect.

What initially turned me off from Grimm was just how cookie cutter and cheap it was. The concept seemed amazing. Cop becomes directly involved with protecting people from the hidden fantasy world. Very Harry Dresden.
Then I watched the pilot and a few things went horrible wrong for me. 1) He's a Grimm. Basically this means he's not just a normal person pitted against impossible odds, he's predestined to be awesome. Fate. Prophecy. Family line. Whatever. All of these things mean he's no John McClain, he's Harry Potter or Hercules.
2) Only he can see this shit. "Take my word for it while I stab this normal looking guy, I'm killing a werewolf here!
3) Bumps on their head. Yeah, it's TV, and they have to have a budget, but common. The first episode leaves it wide open for a total were-wolf situation, and what we get is some actor who has some flesh color, lupine features on his face? Disappointing.
"Take my word for it while I stab this normal looking guy. I'm killing a werewolf here! Well... mostly it looks like a guy to me too, but I'm pretty sure I'm right."

The show's first season was good, second went into some bad territory, but the current season is great. They've dealt with the flaws from earlier in the show and have good character dynamics at work along with solid plots.

Heh, you might not like it now then. At the end of the previous season, he got turned into a zombie by a voodoo witch doctor Wesen, and though he was eventually cured, it has given him quasi-undead super powers that he hasn't fully realized yet. Yes, he is now damn near invulnerable (but he doesn't know it). It sometimes freaks his girlfriend out when he stops breathing and his heartbeat slows to practically nothing while he's asleep.

It sounds like you didn't watch very many episodes though. Did you see the bee-based Wesen, or the dragon-based Wesen, etc?

Loving VGHS, but I'm just wandering why Brian hasn't mercilessly beat The Law to death by the second episode. I mean yeah he's fun to hate and build-up to the climax and all that good story stuff, but what would be even more fun would be seeing him dead. DEAD!

The Law is WAY funnier in Season 2. Still a douche, but funnier.

Indeed, I'm on Season 2 and he is just a riot. Also Stan Lee was a judge in the first episode...okay. I just find it a little confusing b'cos usually when I see him in a cameo its in something related to him, like the Marvel movies.

I also love Epic Meal Time Guy as the principal, he is just great. Epic meal time is also a show to which I have never finished an episode, not because it is bad but like all cooking shows I cannot watch it without drooling buckets.
