I wonder if there's a way to make tags non-anonymous. It seems people abuse these things far from their intended purpose. Perhaps if the tag linked to the author by scrolling over it. (Tag by "X"). Mind you, I don't really care about passive aggressive little barbs (one really has to be sad to be anonymous on an almost anonymous forum), but it does kind of defeat the purpose of those tags when people use them to flame each other.

I've gone through the settings and can't find where this would be. Not sure if it's possible but know that Administrators can see who put them. If there's one that you think is a violation of the rules (which are currently being rewritten to be more clear) then report it and let us know.

I'd be behind this. I've never really paid much attention to the tags, honestly.

Oh, and it was me that wrote the "passive aggressive barbs" one. :p

I dated a passive aggressive Barb. I never quite knew what I did to piss her off.

Still sounds like a decent idea, the general idea of tags are suppose to be easier searching for certain threads? But who the hell is going to search though some of these random tags.

One of the things I may be doing when we get to the new redesign is to set it for better, more descriptive tags or make it so that tags have to be okayed by the mods/admins.

Basically because of the idea behind tags are to find stuff. Still, I love some of the snarky ones so it may not change at all.

There have been a few instances of people posting bad things as tags. I erased the tag and sent them an email asking them nicely to stop and they did.

I think what Ash tweeted: Chaz just wants to know who tagged his goodbye thread.

I try and keep an eye on them, if they are offensive or really out of line I will delete them. Please report them if they are offensive.

Honestly, I have no idea why some tags are made instead of being posts themselves....
There's a few reasons.

1) The 25 character limit is a challenge.
2) It's kinda subtle while still being obvious.
3) It shows up on every page.
3.5) It shows up in other threads when entering a similar tag.
4) There is no 4.

So is 'chazhattery' one of those passive aggressive tags? Cause I think this thread just earned it. :yo:

Funny tags can easily be made as post, that way they aren't clogging the tag/search system?

Course some are funny, but still irrelevant thus bogging down the system.

It seems people abuse these things far from their intended purpose.
The correct word is "utilize" as in, "use for a purpose other than the intended purpose."

If you give a child a toy, and they play with the box, are you going to take away the box and force them to play with the toy, and why? What harm is there really?

it does kind of defeat the purpose of those tags when people use them to flame each other.
Defeat what purpose? The threads wouldn't be tagged at all if people didn't have funny things to tag them as. The forum has had tags for a long time before people started using them.

Further, what does a tag do to hurt the thread, tag system, or frankly, anything about this forum? I can't figure out what you mean by, "defeat the purpose" - an extra tag does not 'harm' the other tags. It doesn't prevent the tag system from working. The tags that are used most frequently (ie, the non funny ones) are going to show up in the tag cloud ahead of the infrequently used funny ones and one time jokes. If a funny tag has been used enough to show up in the tag cloud, then it's a valid tag for the purpose of finding relevant threads.

I just don't see the down side you seem to be annoyed with.

At best you seem to be complaining that there is one very tiny little anonymous place to post on the forum, and for some reason it annoys you to see people making snide remarks about a thread without being accountable.

Personally I love them. They're hilarious. They probably prevent normal people from making alts for a one-off joke about a given thread.

The admins/mods have enough visibility in the threads and tagging system to catch egregious violations, and the thread reporting tool can be used if a particular tag annoys you so much that you MUST know who had the gall to create it.

So.

Please explain to me what you want to accomplish with tagging that cannot be accomplished because people are utilizing it for a purpose for which it was not originally intended.

Alternately, explain how the forum is harmed by having an anonymous 25 character (50, if you make two, or 125 if you made the original post) note attached to a thread. Where is the threat or harm to the community that can't be adequately controlled through regular moderation?

If a tag is flame-y, and it crosses the line of what kind of flames would be allowed in a given post in a given forum, report the thread.

Don't take away all the boxes because you think that one of the kids is going to use it to passively aggressive annoy you, when all the other kids are playing nicely with it and ignoring the toy.
