Catholic hospital argues fetuses aren't people

Looks more like "Hey, Colorado's laws currently define a person as someone who's born alive, and doesn't include unborn babies. Could we maybe keep the law as-is for now? We'd appreciate it. We'll decide what to do after the court case is over, okay?"

It makes sense for them though. It doesn't matter if one plays the right side or the devils advocate, if they forces decision to be made.

They would, quite frankly, love it if Colorado declared unborn fetuses to be persons, and wrongfull death fee would be cheap compared to the campaign they've been pushing for decades.

But if not, then they're going to demonstrate to people the consequences of non personhood for fetuses.

Chances are good even if they win, it will spur legislation that gives fetuses more rights, which is still a good thing.

So all in all, this appears to fit in line with their primary mission.

Aaaand I don't know why that was posted anonymously, but it was unintentional.

Too much typing on the iPad, methinks.

I hold the extremely unpopular point of view that fetuses ARE people, but that abortion should be legal. A person it may be, but, a fetus is not a child any more than a child is an adult. They are all separate stages in human development and treated as separate in myriad uncountable ways. We as a culture, nation, state, whathaveyou, decide people must be killed all the time. It's an arbitrary matter of debate who gets put to death for what and when.

Colorado has tried a few times to pass the "Fetuses are people" law, but it generally fails because it's a slippery slope. Personally I would like it if people who kill a woman who is 9 monthes pregnant could get a double homicide charge, but there needs to be as well, a reasonable limit in the language to not butt right up on Roe v. Wade, which there never is.

Wait, doesn't Roe v Wade limit abortion to the period when it's still an embryo and not a foetus?

...

Ok, just checked, there's some overlap...

Exactly. Moreover, the beliefs of the people involved are irrelevant in the court, unless they are also held by the law. Which is good, otherwise people who murder abortion doctors could argue they were defending another person.

For the upper ranks of the Catholic Church, the definition of a human being boils down to one simple question: "Can it be molested?"
