[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

Expectations are weird. Thank goodness the food thing is just once a year, but at that point I'd say, "Hey, every year you ask us to reimburse for food, but I was hoping that this year rather than paying you back for food, can husband and I take you all out to a nice dinner and we'll call it even?" Then plan on buying a few little things your family specifically enjoys. That way no one is trying to keep track, and the whole event should be a lot more laid back. If it continues to be a problem, though, I'd probably just start responding with requests for money with, "Oh, I didn't realize our visit was such a burden for you. Tell us what we owe you, and next time we'll shorten our trip, or stay at a hotel so it isn't such an imposition on you."

For the gift giving I'd suggest something along the lines of, "While we appreciate you letting us participate in your gifts it feels like we're making you do all the work and it's less personal for us, so we're going to stop going in on your gifts. We will instead send our own gifts when we feel its appropriate and as our finances permit." Then if she pesters you in the future, "Oh, thanks for reminding me of that! We will send a card, but I'm sure they'll love your gift."

Now I'm wondering what her love language is. :p
We often pick up the tab at the rare supper out we have us a group. We bring wine and beer even without being involved which is why it's just so odd.

I spent a fortune at Michaels today to make her a wreath that matches her tree. I had my dad do some stealth last night so it will match her decor and all. This was of course before the call.

The good thing is that she's one of the few people that doesn't pressure me to drink. I love beer and I wish I could drink but it's totally not safe on my meds. More that one person asked me to drink several times. My sister was even trying to negotiate with me to have just one pink and nasty. I need that Sean Bean picture now...one does not simply have just one pink and nasty...that stuff multiplies in your system.

What on earth is in a pink and nasty? I don't wanna google that!

It's kind of funny, I stopped drinking a year ago. Not exactly intentionally, either. I'd always been aware that I sort of drank too much. Not a lot once, just a couple pints a day or so. But I just one day ordered coffee instead of beer, and kept doing so. After a couple months like that, I couldn't enjoy beer. It immediately gave me a headache, made me miserable. Even the raste disagreed with me. Withdrawal effects of some sort, I guess.

I will have a drink every once in a while, but I don't enjoy it nearly as much as I used to - and I was a bit of a connoisseur or beer snob. I can quite simply do without it without feeling I'm missing it at all. I feel good and happy about that.

Yet I've not actually told my family this. At Thanksgiving I just shook my head and replied "yeah, sort of" when asked if I was on a diet because I turned down a drink.

I'm gonna have booze pushed on me all Christmas.

But oh well, I'll drink a couple, pace myself. Probably take some Tylenol to dull a likely headache.

It's really weird how people are when you don't drink. My ex-boss actually seemed put out that I wouldn't have a drink with her once before a flight. I went to the bar and hung out with her and ordered a pop, but she was funny about it. I have no problem if people want to drink. It doesn't bother me at all. I have a few super religious aunts who like to preach when people drink and that just makes it awkward all around. I just can't join in.

Like I mentioned above, my sister tried to negotiate with me about it. Lots of people ask me more than once, like its super shocking and then they want to know why. I mean, I don't mind telling people why. My pain patch is pretty obvious, but its so weird that people find it hard to grasp. When I gave up coffee a few years ago because I was drinking scary amounts of caffeine, I would tell people no thank you once and it was fine. No questions. But when someone doesn't drink....it's a huge shock. I'm on a few Facebook support groups and a lady had a light beer or two when she was on a weaker pain patch than mine and she passed out. I can't take that risk with all my other health issues and I can't scare my kids or husband like that. It's a shame though because certain foods do really go better with a cold pint. Diet Coke is the most awesome beverage ever crafted, but it doesn't pair perfectly with everything :)[DOUBLEPOST=1482387853,1482387562][/DOUBLEPOST]
I don't understand the pushing of alcohol. I very rarely drink, so most times if offered alcohol by family I'll decline, and their response has always just been to offer soda instead
I don't get it either. That and wanting to know why. I don't mind saying why and I have a very obvious reason. I always hate the question because there are some people out there who don't have an answer - they just don't like to drink. My family are pretty heavy drinkers too so it was pretty hilarious to watch them get sloppy at Thanksgiving. If I can't join them, it's nice that I can have some immature fun at their expense. My sister and our cousin demolished the pink and nasty for me. I will never forget the Thanksgiving about 7 years ago when she ran out to meet our car on my uncle's terrible road into his cottage holding the jug of pink and nasty by the little handle at the top. She was wearing a few glasses worth of it down her white shirt and she wasn't super coherent. I'm actually sitting here laughing thinking about it. OMG.

I thought teetotalism was a very NA thing. You would most likely get very strange looks in Spain, but (at least in the SW U.S.) I don't think anyone would think anything of it.

I am totally a teetotaler!! That word makes me laugh but when I just read your post, I realized that a teetotaler is exactly what I am these days lol! I am super obsessed with David's Tea. I also love Teavana, but we don't have one here. I will be making a trip to the mall when we're visiting my family to pick up a few of their teas.

I had a friend over for coffee today and she decided to go for tea instead so I got to play tea-barista. I have their advent calendar so I was able to offer a selection of 20 some teas.

I just brewed a strawberry rhubarb for my photoshopping. I'm so stuffed up from my cold that I can't smell it tonight, but it is the best smelling thing ever.

We've all but stopped drinking in our home. I am struggling to finish the beer we bought for the party last Saturday, and it will be decades before I finish my Scotch collection.

Now that we're coming to the area, I'm SURE that @Dirona would "help" relieve you of any precious bottles that shouldn't go to waste. (she's the Scotch aficionado in our house)

;)

Yeah I've managed to get my collection down from 57 unique bottles down to the mid twenties. You're welcome to come grab some. Save you buying new once you get here.

You just made a grave error.

In all seriousness, it'll be March, but she may take you up on that offer.

I think I'll take up daily scotch drinking for Lent....
I don't think they'll be lent, I think she'll straight up give them to you.

My rant: Why did I volunteer to come into work at 7a the day after staying up until 3?
Oh, right. The promise of 5hrs OT during Christmas season.

I may have to make a trip out there ahead of her . . . this was a halforums-wide offer, right?

I would totally love to have enjoy an ounce from each bottle. Or would've a couple years ago. Now, I just like the thought of doing so. Plus hanging out with Pudding and Cupcake.

I can chime in on your side on this. I don't drink. I'm not "against" drinking, it's not religious, it's not for health reasons, just never liked the smell or taste of any of it. It's just not appealing on any level for me. I had people ask "Well, how do you let loose?" my response, "I just do it!" I don't have to "get a buzz" to do dumb crap, I'm quite capable on my own! (In case anyone was wondering, never ignite a model rocket engine without a rocket attached)

I've even had people accuse me of being "no fun" because I don't imbibe. I just don't understand what is so damn hard to comprehend that I don't drink.

Minor rant! Went and rented a truck for this weekend. We're taking 5 people + a dog. So I got a vehicle that seats 7. I go to pick it up and it's a Kia Sorento. Sure, it seats 7 - if you want to have nearly 0 room for things like luggage or presents. I have no idea how we're all going to fit. And we leave at 6 am tomorrow.

No, they didn't have anything else.

And let's not forget the surprise $200 deposit they threw at me that I almost couldn't cover. Good thing I get paid tomorrow.
