General Empyrion Thread

After watching a few videos on the elder's tomb, it doesn't look nearly as scary as I was building it up to be. Gonna take a shot at it tonight.

But after watching those videos, I'm left with a puzzling question. Why doesn't anyone scout rooms with their drone before taking the plunge? All of the videos are like "oh, I hear spiders!" and them being all twitchy about going into the next room. Why not just send in your drone and see what's up?

Because a lot of them don't appear until you get to a certain place. Like, they spawn in. Not sure if they spawn in for the drone.

That's a fair reason..but I'll still probably use the drone to check for chests and places to stand to avoid spiders.

Didn't find the Elder's Tomb. Did find the "abandoned archaeologist's site."

Went down one floor..and when the 1 alien assassin i saw suddenly became 5, there was nowhere to stand, and they kicked the shit out of me.

About went exactly as I expected.

Incidentally, I watched a youtube video on this same PoI. That guy got to the same place as me, saw the one assassin, went in and killed it. He didn't get a million spawns on him. So unfair ;)

CV mining is the bomb. But it does create a lot of waste stone. So, with my base churning out 8 or 9 emergency rations every time I log in, I don't really need a farm on my CV. I gutted farm out out of my CV, and added 2 more advanced constructors (for a total of 4). One constructor is for processing ores on the fly (or making fuel, when necessary) and the other three are on a constant stone-conversion loop. I'll likely never have to mine iron, copper or silicon for normal purposes again.

On the other hand, when you need 24K iron for a snazzy new combat CV so that you can go kick the shit out of the Zirax defense outpost and its corresponding spawn, (just for revenge sake and to recover my dead sv)...well, it's just not fast enough. Back to mining iron for a bit, I guess. :)

Like you, I just set the on-board constructor to process base materials while I'm between 'roids.
I still have my CV mini-farm, though. Mainly because base power (fuel v. solar) is still so unreliable that I can't count on a base not losing power and killing all my plants if I'm away and don't refuel it for an extra day. My first big base idea didn't pan out how I wanted and I can't use it for farming because I'd forgotten how the game mechanics work (Oxygen).

TIL you can warp to the various "moon sectors" for planets that have them (if they're far enough away from the planet), and those sectors have their own minable asteroids

You can't oxygenate a space unless it is fully enclosed. That means enclosed fully by base blocks.
I tried to make a base that preserved the contour of the land. Which it did, but the game treats my base as having no floor, so a) I can't oxygenate it, and b) those stun bugs keep spawning inside my base.

For the gas giant planets, yes. Sometimes multiple moons will share the sector, too.

I haven't had any base power or oxy problems, knock on wood.
All my space stations do fine on solar.... but my planetside bases have about a 50/50 chance of having empty capacitors when I return to them, despite having enough solar to outweigh their needs. So I just have a small fuel tank and reactor to kickstart the recharging process.

Yep. Any voxel counts as spawnable area. So you just have to suck it up and pave it over.

I learned that the hard way last game...had some dirt inside my factory-spawned base, and kept getting mob spawns inside the base, and when radioactive fog rolled in, a lot of my base was filled with it.

So, because the galaxy is so big, I started making a spreadsheet of which sectors had which mats.
But after about 5 or 6 solar systems, the mats list got longer than a single screen. So I've started making some software to keep track (because, of course I did). I'm logging all of the spreadsheet data to a SQLExpress database (because why the fuck does MySQL and sqlite have to be so hard to implement in visual studio?). I imagine in the next couple days I'll write some search and reporting functions, and then I can scrap the spreadsheet.

The data came in really handy when I had to scrounge up 27000 sathium for my combat cv build. This seems like an awful lot of trouble to go kick over that Zirax defense outpost that ganked my first decent SV a week or so ago. But what else am I gonna do? :)

Edit: Is there any reason NOT to kill pirate PoIs? It'll raise my rep with every other faction. I mean, is there some awesome trading post or something I'll miss out on if I do it? I'm currently neutral with them.

I just keep track of the sectors that are rich, the galaxy is big enough that I shouldn't have to document every one. Besides, once I waypoint the asteroids, well, that sorta serves as my reference database. :)

I don't know yet, but my endgame is to be 6000-Honored with everyone, so I'll let you know if you're missing out on anything.

Not that I know of, but killing Zirax raises pirate faction too. I'm on quite friendly terms with the Pirates, not that I've ever found anything useful at their POIs or anything.

I found a planet with sathium deposits and set up autominers. I'm drowning in sathium.
With my planetary data, it only took me about 90 minutes or so to gather 27K's worth. Of course, that's predicated on me having once run around that system and visited all of the different asteroids so they stay on my map. That's the part that takes forever ;)

A string of solar powered bases with teleporters (with motion sensors to turn them off when I'm not actively standing on the pad) makes sure I can get to any of my resource generators within a couple seconds. They can really save a lot of time. BA-teleporters have a very long range (CV teleporters can only jump within your current sector and any attached planetary zones), many light years - so basically I don't need a CV to harvest any more. Except for at my gold asteroid. But even then, I have a base there with a mining CV parked next to it. Saves a ton on Pentaxid.

If I ever feel the need to ever touch down on a planet again (except for PoI runs), I'll probably update everything to include planetary bodies.

Jesus Christ, I found where all the Gold and Aluminum is. Shame it's a PVP system, but that's the sector I'm probably gonna build my next base at.

No use for aluminum yet but gold is needed for optronics if you're building cpu-limt compliant stuff
I am indeed. No sense obsessing over the design if I'm only ever going to be able to use it on EZMode servers. I want stuff I can publish that can then be used anywhere.

--Patrick

That's the reason I've been spending so much time waiting for optronics to build. (siiiigh) It'd feel cheesy to put the blueprints in creative, pull off the CPU extenders, and then build it without them.

TIL: You can "mine" wood with SV mining lasers--an accidental discovery.

If you point the lasers directly at a tree, it'll tell you that you can't mine them. But if you point them at the base of the tree such that you mine the dirt, and the tree collapses, the wood appears in your collector box. Maybe a bit cheese, but so convenient.

That’s not new. If you “destroy“ a tree (and apparently spleefing counts), it leaves wood behind for pickup. I’ve done this by landing on them with a CV, or when shooting at mobs.

—Patrick

Right..but if you destroy the ground with the mining laser, you don't even gotta pick the wood up. It just appears in your mining container.

I bet if you used the mining laser to zap the crumbs you get when you break rocks, it would vacuum those up, too.
Man, I so miss being able to grind rocks with a harvester.

Any clue what triggers zirax drones in space? I never see any in the starter system, but the further away I go, the more often I'm tending to see them. Will they diminish over time if you build bases and the like? what's the scoop?
