TIL: Today I Learned

So my favorite apple, the honeycrisp, has been around since the early 90's and I've only really become aware of it in the last few years.

Turns out there are a number of popular apples that are protected by patents, trademarks, and agreements and operate in groups similar to the diamond industry (click on the title to read the article if you don't want to listen):

So while I can get a honeycrisp (the seller takes care of the fees to minnesota university) there are apples varieties you can't buy or sell without joining a group and paying them for the privilege.

The Evercrisp, an improved child of the honeycrisp, has a per-tree purchase fee of $1, a per tree, per year fee ($0.00 - $0.30 per tree per year depending on age), and you have to be a member of the organization, which is currently $100 a year.

TIL Fred Clause had a budget of 100 million dollars....really? They had THAT much faith in this film? Just saying, Elf had only 33 million dollars, allowing it to make BANK.

My favorite is a trademarked apple called Envy. They are so good, but we don't always have them here.

Dabney Coleman was in Cloak and Dagger which was one of my childhood favs. I haven't seen it in at least 20 years. I wonder how it holds up.

John C McGinley is great too.

Summary: The title may be a little misleading and baiting, but the article reveals that Davis basic went into Garfield with the full intent to market the crap out of him and make a cash grab. Successfully. He was designed by Davis to pull together the most money-making aspects of the industry. Also lots of comments from easy to please people being offended that the author called Garfield unfunny.

Then he succeeded! Good for him if that was his goal, dude made a fortune. (Referring to Garfield - I should have quoted the post)

Isn't that how Scientology started too? Someone heard that creating a religion was a great way to get rich and that there was no tax?

Today I learned that there are still people who give their children the name Adolf. Adolf "Adi" Hütter was recently appointed manager of Eintracht Frankfurt, a football club in Germany.

Oh, and he's Austrian too.

TIL about pork-cat syndrome:
Pork–cat syndrome is an allergy to pork, usually post adolescence, that is caused by exposure to cats. Although first described in 1994, it was first documented in the U.S. by Scott Commins and Thomas Platts-Mills during their research on alpha-gal allergy.

It is called "pork–cat syndrome" because "almost all people with the condition are cat owners, and many have multiple cats. Some develop an allergic response to cat serum albumin (protein made by a cat’s liver) that cross-reacts with albumin in pork when someone consumes it, and can lead to severe or even fatal allergic reactions when pork is consumed."

I know I just find it funny that Coke is number 1 diet coke is number 2 then the rest fight for the bacon grease.
You don’t remember the Snapple commercials where they were all “Let the big guys duke it out, we’re just happy being #3?”

Diet Rite beat them all. RC released it nationwide in the US in 1962, a year before Tab and "Patio" (which was the original name of Diet Pepsi).
