Rant VIII: The Reckoning

kb/s must mean bytes, because my calculation shows a 3 megabit/s connection would be about 1TB per month.
No, bytes would be kB/s, not kb/s. I admit I did not double-check my precision, so here we go:
1TiB = 1000000MiB / 30days / 24hr / 60min / 60sec = 0.3858Mb/s which is ~ 384kb/s.

And yes, 300GB/day is more indicative of torrenting, not gameplay. That's > 10.5GB/hr worth of activity.

I think I've mentioned here that I don't have anything against religion in general, mostly because the most important people in my life are very religious. My grandmother was one of them. Another one was Father Mendoza, a priest and a high school teacher and I literally owe him my life. He helped my in a difficult time in my teens. He died today.

It's hard losing those who have had a positive impact on our life. Be that person to others in your life.

IKR?!? What the hell? Almost 1/3 of our data in a single day!!
Is he downloading digitally bought games? That's the only thing I can think of that would use that much data over that amount of time.

You could always tell him to switch to a PS4. The Playstation Network is too goddamn slow to pull in those sorts of numbers.

Nothing like filling out a job application to make you feel totally worthless. Sometimes you get to a section that might as well be a giant neon sign that says "DON'T BOTHER!!" The miracles you pulled off today don't matter. The sins of twenty years ago ensure the application goes straight into the shredder,

From Salary.com about resumes:
Generally, it is reasonable to go back 10 to 15 years in your work history. If you have a longer work history than that, you can divide your work history into two sections, recent and relevant, or include a separate paragraph that summarizes all relevant prior experience.

I have a feeling this might be about a criminal record.
Oftentimes the cheap criminal background check an employer does (if any) only goes back 7-10 years, depending on the county/state laws.
I often prune my resume to keep it down to 2 pages, and anything that's too old get summarized.

It's effective to write a new resume tailored to the job you are applying for every time.
This really depends on the type of job and job market you're in. Sure, it's probably always better. But if you're likely to be sending out 50+ job applications in a week, all for similar jobs (say, 25x first line helpdesk and 25x reception work and 25x administrative assistant), it's a complete waste of time to adjust your resumé each time. If you're in a position where you have the luxury of being more picky - either you have a "wanted" degree, or a high level of useful experience, or you're in a stable job and just looking for something higher up - then, of course, you should tailor it.

There are also a whole different set of rules for government jobs. I didn't know that when I applied from the outside but I was lucky and got in anyways. They had use write a very technical three or four hour written test and a technical interview so that's what did it for me.

Their cover letter and resume standards are totally different though. When my old office was downsized and we all had to find other jobs, they sent us on training in how to tailor our letters and resumes for government jobs. It was the best training they have ever sent me on and if any of you here would ever like help applying for a government job, I would be more than happy to help. The hardest part for me was to make my resume longer than two pages. It hurt to do it...

I'm not the one who put the business in the situation it's in. I'm not the one who cut off major streams of revenue in the name of "cost cutting." There's no realistic way I could keep it from going under. So why do I feel like I've failed so miserably?

Sounds like you and @Gared could have a lot to talk about.

It probably has something to do with you being a good person and caring about the lives (and livelihoods) of the people you work with. Sadly, I can offer you no quick-fix suggestions for the feeling of failure. It took me until 3 weeks ago to finally realize that it really wasn't my fault in some way that my old company went down - because I was their purchaser and maybe, just maybe, if I'd scrimped a little more or negotiated a little harder, maybe crisis could have been averted. It couldn't've been. It really, honestly, and truly wasn't my fault; and the financial statements that we got our hands on near the end proved it. We had a "must-have, must install in-house" hardware order get held up in Chicago one time (costing the company tens of thousands of dollars), and our owner chewed the ass of the freight company up one side and down the other for hours, just screaming and carrying on like that company's actions were going to mean the end of the world for everyone involved in this deal. You know why that shipment had been delayed? We hadn't paid our freight bill with that carrier in over 180 days. Ownership came from the Microsoft school of thought, where because you have the money, you call all of the shots and anyone who doesn't want to play ball gets left out. Well, guess what? For one thing, that doesn't work as well in the commercial casework business, because your customers can spec individual brands of components and you have to use them (or spend an assload of time and effort trying to sub out something else), and if one of those companies that didn't want to play ball is the regionally contracted reseller of that product, you either have to go back with your ass in your hands and try to make amends or find a third party re-reseller and pay through the fucking nose. Also - and perhaps more importantly - that only fucking works if you HAVE THE MONEY!

Regardless, keep reminding yourself that you aren't at fault. It may be extremely cold comfort right now, and maybe forever - I still feel worse for the other 200+ people who were let go than I do for myself - but you're likely going to need the reminder when things get dark. And, as always, if you need help, drop me a line.

Tonight it really felt like evil is winning and the people with the power to even dial it back aren't interested in doing so. To the point where even leaving the bedroom to get something to eat was a struggle. I just wanted to go to bed and stay there until it was time to get up for work. At least then there is a reason to be up. On single nights off there just isn't. By the time places open to get things done, it's already time for bed.

So my student loans have been in default for quite some time - it started right along the time I was in dire economic trouble and lost my house, etc. So now that I'm a bit more stable financially, it was time to get rid of the garnishment and start rebuilding that credit. So I did the whole rehabilitation thing and just this month I was out from under it...and they tripled my payment amount. I can't pay it and they've denied any attempts to restructure based on income, because my kids are no longer technically dependents (although they are both living at home and neither are working - long story here and no, it's nothing that I'm pushing them on).

So I guess I get a couple of months where I get my full paycheck before they start garnishing again because I can't pay it and will go into default pretty much right away. Yay me.

@Dave I believe the thought has been voiced a time or two before, but here goes:

Would you be willing to consider permitting some of us to chip in a little when it comes to charges associated with hosting these boards?

I know you may have strong opinions about the issue, but please do consider it. I think there might be several people here who are more than happy to contribute.

I've gotten costs down to $25 a month. So it's not an issue at all. But thanks, man.

On basis can they triple your payment amount? That hardly seems legal. I'm a good negotiator. I've even called places posing as my friend, with their permission and they were right there laughing as I did it, and gave helped them get deals. Anything I can do to help? Contract I can read? Polite, yet full of veiled contempt and outage, appeal letter I can help with?

You stepped up to make it right and they're taking advantage and putting you in undue hardship and refusing to take your circumstances into consideration.[DOUBLEPOST=1497374122,1497373912][/DOUBLEPOST]Sorry if that's over the top, bit I feel very strongly about student loans and how they are strangling people. The interest rates and payment terms are criminal and it makes angry because they prey on a part of the population, teenagers just out of high school, who don't have the credit history or assets to secure loans at a fair rate.

The problem is because according to my last two year's taxes we should be flush with cash. Because Sam had a part-time job she wasn't able to be a dependent (although it was a work-study so all money was used to pay for school) and Zach didn't live with us. Now he does.

Our deal with the kids is that as long as they are going to school full time they can live with us rent free. And Zach just hasn't gotten a job yet. So there's 5 people living with us and we're covering everything. But current finances don't matter. Oy.

I'll get something figured out. Worst case scenario is I don't pay and go back into default. There's a limit on what they can garnish. Not good for my credit but that's the breaks. I'll probably keep paying them the same amount just to help keep it from spiraling out of control, but if they decide to add more fees and penalties it's gonna be ugly.

Well, that and the sticky/ouchy factor of sitting on leather in the summer.
I love wearing shorts, but this is why I feel like I need to carry a towel or cushion when I go out to eat in the summer.

You could just carry a cross-body bag or the jogging pouch like Mr. Z's to take care of the pocket thingandwhyamIencouragingthis?!

Cause you know what you like.

Ewoks don't wear pants, so I can see where you're coming from
They also don't have to worry about skin sticking to leather. I'm not QUITE that fuzzy, unfortunately.
