Jim Irwin, former announcer for the Green Bay Packer games, has passed away.

I know this won't mean much to those of you who don't follow sports or even live outside the Wisconsin area, but this guy was a fantastic announcer who worked alongside Max McGee until they retired in 1998. He began his career as announcer for the GB Packers in 1969.

Rest in peace, Mr. Irwin. The games weren't the same without you calling them and they sure won't be the same without you here to enjoy them.

Games always lose something to me when a long-time announcer leaves or dies. It was like that with the Mariners this past season without Neihaus on the mic. I used to hate watching baseball on TV, and even not really enjoy MLB games in the stadium (I'm more of a AAA, small-park with cheap-ass hot dogs kind of guy), but I loved listening to Dave call the games. He managed to make the game come alive in your mind better than even a visual medium could. I'm sure Irwin will be missed just as much in the great frozen north as Neihaus is out here.
