Rant VIII: The Reckoning

So the good news (?) is that the legal document is not from my boss, but some lawyer, and I don't have to sign.

The bad news is I still have to get my own employees to sign it, but I feel that it is bad for them, and I refuse to put them at risk, and now I'm fighting with a lawyer.

Well, you're allowed to strike out the sections you don't agree with and/or amend it as you see necessary and send it back for review. It's how the process works.
Not useful if the employer is basically saying, "You will sign it or you will be out of a job."

Yes, the problem is this lawyer is... difficult when it comes to amending things. Not in the traditional way, but in the way that some people are obstructionists who arrogantly talk over you so you give up (which I don't, so whoo).

It doesn't look like I'll be dying on this particular hill, though... But you never know.

I'm starting to feel like I'm getting sick. You know, right before the week where I'm going to be studying/partying nonstop.

This blows.

I took some Motrin and drank a shitton of orange juice which has helped. Guess maybe putting this in the regular rant thread was a bit obnoxious. I'm gonna fight through this no matter what haha.

I hate that feeling of dread when you hear your parent's ring tone at 9 pm on a Sunday night. All you can think about is which one is in the hospital... It's Dad.

He should be fine, he had heart arrhythmia, and high potassium levels. So they are purging him of his meds, and will start over to try to see what he should really be taking.

Could be worse.

It could be 2 AM on a Monday morning.

...Not that I'm saying anything like that could happen in, oh, four-five hours from when I post this...

My 85 year old Dad was released from the hospital yesterday. I call to check up on him tonight. He is out making a taco run because he ate all the leftovers for dinner. Hard to blame him he just got finished mowing the front yard...

And that, boys and girls, is the sound of my computer taking a huge shit. Won't boot, won't recognize any of my hard drives, nothing. Fuckity fucking fuck.

Yay iPod. I'm bringing up my son's comp tomorrow and trying ping to put the video card in it and hope I can game even a little.

"I don't have the knowledge, desire or authority to correct this problem. Because the problem is that you're too stupid to use MSExcell."

I am inches away from screaming that out loud today.

It's even worse when half of your company thinks that the solution to everything is to create an excel spreadsheet and share it on the work network, and the other half is too stupid to use excel. Especially when the true solution to everything is to just hold on for 6 more weeks of using the current system, which has been broken for ages, and is criminally outdated, until the new system can be launched, which solves all of the issues people are attempting to solve using excel.

And then you are the guy who has to update the Excel file daily and you can't because people always have it locked and they won't let you password to edit. Oh, and the Windows error message tells you it is locked by "Windows User", which tells me NOTHING!

Oh god it just got worse. This lump had the same problem last week and was then trained on how to resolve it themselves.

100% of our spreadsheets use macros, the prompt you get when you open a file to enable macros does not in fact delete the damn file.

Indeed. And then, once you finally get all of the less-than-tech savvy individuals set up to just view the spreadsheets, the best thing to do is to hire a consultant who thinks that Excel is gift from God, and that your busiest office worker should now spend fully 3/4 of his day manually transitting data from one spreadsheet to another, and if anyone complains it's because they're close-minded idiots who are trying to ruin the company.

Brought my son's computer from the basement, loaded my HD into it and ran a metric fuck-ton of diagnostic and recovery programs. I lost nothing. And I'm back up and running on my main machine, although with some slightly different (and cannibalized) parts. And I distinctly heard my wife say "new computer" so maybe soon I'll be building my own gaming rig. I've never actually built one from scratch so this should be interesting.

You will save hundreds of dollars by doing it from scratch. Trust me.

Also, since the Bitcoin miners appear to be switching to ASICs, you can finally get GPUs at or near their suggested retail now.

With the move to a (much) bigger place, my mother took the opportunity to ship me eveything that I have ever touched that happened to be in her possession (a slight exageration, but I swear, not much). We have a double garage. It is full. ALL of the boxes out there are from my mother. Every single one. And because I'm in a small town, the oportunities to dispose of this stuff is rather limited.

Also, if anyone here ever needs linens (tablecloths, table runners, or hand towels in particular), let me know, I have many in a variety of colours, styles, materials, and sizes. Yeesh.

I'm thinking perpetual yard sale. I'll put up a stall in the front yard, and each week a new box is opened and the contents made available. Maybe a la 'Storage Wars'. 50% of money made goes to charity.

That said, it's a town of 4,000 people... not as large a market as I'd like.

I'm totally serious about the garage sale. Put up some signs, put everything out in your driveway, and rake in some money while you give away your crap. Be aware that you will get hagglers. Let them win. Your aim isn't to make money, it's to get rid of stuff. You would be surprised how much will go away in this manner. Just remember that you need to have your house watched because people are stupid and will try and wander inside.

You need to have 3 people there. One to watch the money, one to watch the house (usually just by sitting around doing nothing), and one to help out with anything else. You can do it with only one or two but that gets to be too much.

My mom had garage sales every year and I've put on a bunch. I know way more about getting a garage sale up and running that I have a right to.

When we moved into our house, my family did the same thing. Not just my own stuff, but anything they didn't want but couldn't bring themselves to throw out. In addition to that, we bought the house from a family member who was a bit of a hoarder and often bought things in triplicate. From years of having to get rid of everyone else's stuff, I can tell you, you've got a few options: if you're feeling entrepreneurial, there's Ebay, Craigslist and yard sales. If you just want to get things out, donating to Goodwill or the Salvation Army is a good start, and a tax write-off! Also, animal shelters will happily take blankets and linens.

Mainly I need to go through boxes. I know from the labels that there are a lot of old toys (stuffed, fisher price, etc.), and based on experience, I'm expecting yet more linens. There are also copious volumes of Christmas decorations that need to be sifted through. But before any of that, I need to get the house contents dealt with.

The complicating factor (other than my mother of course) is that a lot of the items that aren't mine belonged to my (recently deceased) grandparents, so for some of the things that I have no use of place for (say, for example, the 6 dolls that grandmother brought back from their various travels that my mother packed in with guest room linens) are also the last things that I have to remember those folks by. So it makes it way way harder to figure out what to do with things. Bah!

Out of curiosity, is there a thrift store/donation place nearby? Value Village or Savers? I've recently started working at one around here and they ALWAYS welcome new stuff.

My grandpa was a part of the 4th Marine Division during the pacific. I've been to a few reunions with him, and we've learned more about him and what he experienced at them than any other time at them. My mom mentioned this may be the last year. There's not even enough attendees that most organizers are not willing to touch it. I really hope I can make it this year, but we'll see what the finances dictate.

The thought that there aren't enough people left to even hold a reunion any more bums me out.

This is a truth and right now, I understand it fully. I've no reason to be, but I've never been more depressed in my life than I am currently and I take no end of shit because of my demeanor from my superiors (not direct superiors, they're actually an excellent team). It's always from the Staffs around here. I've contemplated resigning every day for the last couple of months. I have no doubt all of this is part of the reason that I, a reasonably healthy 31 year old, had blood pressure that was 190/110. My health leave is almost up. I'm dreading every day.

I'm not saying I have PTSD induced depression, but I am fucking depressed.
