Yeah, sad thing, it's really hard to get into trouble while driving a rented Porsche in Ottawa. Nearest place that rents them is Toronto.

Much more believable Crosby headline would be "Several inconvenienced as Sidney Crosby sited for trespassing after practicing too late at local rink."

Yeah. I bet Olberman salivated over that Deceptions and Doublecross book.

I personally give Toronto the benefit of the doubt that their first two seasons in the NHL were, in fact, the precursor to the Leafs.

But they were still an expansion team.

#40

Covar

Covar

KO gives us a history lesson...
As much as I can't stand Olberman, I have to love this video. I've said it before, but the biggest detriment to this sport is the NHL and certain fans obsession with the original six. It's incredibly exclusionary.

Charlie Don't Surf

If on that bandwagon means I was born in/lived in Nashville and started going to Predators games when I was 12, and had at least partial season tickets until I left the state at age 21, and openly wept with joy when they won their first playoff series, etc. etc., I'm on the bandwagon.

The Nashville Predators played 64 minutes of good hockey last night - and one absolutely horrid minute.

Fortunately, the horrid minute did not come back to haunt them, as they won in the shootout.

50 shots on goal, plus the four in the shootout, on Roberto Luongo. And only three made it into the back of the net.

#60

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

So Crosby is missing the next two games, but he totally doesn't have mumps, you guys.

#61

jwhouk

jwhouk

Yeah, of course not.

You know, you could make a pretty darn good all-star squad out of the players who have either had confirmed cases of the mumps, or are "alleged" to have had them.

From Hockey's Future message boards:

CONFIRMED CASES:
Anaheim:
Corey Perry - Nov. 12
Francois Beauchemin - Nov. 12
Clayton Stoner - Nov. 28
Emerson Etem - Dec. 5

Minnesota:
Christian Folin - late October
Keith Ballard - late October
Marco Scandella - Nov. 13
Jonas Brodin - Nov. 13
Ryan Suter - Dec. 4

N.Y. Rangers:
Tanner Glass - Nov. 29

New Jersey:
Adam Larsson - Dec. 10
Travis Zajac - Dec. 10

SUSPECTED CASES:
St. Louis:
Jori Lehtera - late October
Vladimir Tarasenko - late October
Ryan Reaves - late October
Unknown other Blues players - late October

Pittsburgh:
Sidney Crosby - Dec. 12

Montreal:
Bryan Allen - Dec. 12

OTHER CASE:
Tom Sestito - during the lockout contracted virus right before returning from England

#64

checkeredhat

The Leafs are once again winning games while being outshot by insane margins, which is part of why I haven't been in this thread this season. It's the same shit as last season and I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop (Well, okay, it already did for two games and they picked it back up. But it'll happen again.) Last season was so depressing I couldn't even bring myself to watch the playoffs.

But Komarov is always fun to watch. Or was, until he was injured.

#65

jwhouk

jwhouk

#66

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

Oh while I'm procrastinating and posting on here instead of doing my laundry or grocery shopping:

Rogers coverage is balls, why is Glen Healy still employed, and why would you hire any of the Star's sports reporters, especially Damien freaking Cox?!

#67

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

Like I said, the shoe dropped for two games. Nashville and Buffalo. But the Leafs are 7-1-1 since then despite getting horrifically outshot on the reg in that time. It's the same pattern as last year and the collapse is coming unless this team smartens its defence up.

If Reimer or Bernier has a bad night, you get games like Nasvhille and Buffalo. If they have a hot night, we get games like Detroit or Calgary. But relying on insane Save percentage and shooting percentage is not going to be sustainable. I know I'm repeating a lot of analysts, but honestly you don't need to be an analyst or even to know what the statistics actually are to see that the Leafs have been getting badly outplayed night in night out and that it can't last.

#68

checkeredhat

Viktor Stalberg of the Predators was placed on waivers yesterday. No one claimed him after 24 hours, so he was reassigned to Milwaukee of the AHL.

#137

blotsfan

Now that I've had more time to think about it, here are my thoughts on the Sabres post-trade:

#138

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

We're coming up right behind you, man.
Apparently the Leafs are taking a "Scorched earth" approach and committing to a full-on rebuild.

This is exactly what this team needed like 6 seasons ago. Burke sorta started a quick fix solution that may have been going somewhere had they not fired him. We'll see if Bell and Rogers are ready to put their money where their mouths are and actually commit to this plan, or if they're going to fuck it up mid way through like every other ownership group has.

#139

blotsfan

blotsfan

You guys have 15 points on us, and we just got significantly worse. Maple Leafs have no chance of going ahead of (behind?) us.

I don't mean in the race to the bottom for the draft lottery, I just mean into rebuild territory. We too, are nuking the site from orbit.

#141

jwhouk

jwhouk

That being said, when are you going to give us Kessel? ;)

#142

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

When you give us the rest of your first round picks?

#143

See, that's the problem. You guys always want these unreasonable trades with everyone else, and yet we ask for one little thing and you want the entire farm for them.

#144

HCGLNS

Science!

infrared goalies.jpg

#145

jwhouk

jwhouk

So the colors represent shots, and the redder they are, the higher the shot percentage against (aka goals per shot) would be?

#146

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

The colours supposedly represent the body heat of where the shooter was located at the time of the shot. So it shows that the shooters against MTL are more around the crease than the shooters against NSH. Doesn't mean much, but kinda neat.

#147

Jay

Jay

Price has been the best goalie this season.

It means something: Shea, Roman, Seth, Alexander, etc. keep people AWAY from their Pekka.[DOUBLEPOST=1423877418,1423877351][/DOUBLEPOST]
Price has been the best goalie this season.
You obviously have not been watching games that don't involve Canadian clubs.

And that's why Price is a better goalie this season.

GG on the fanbois on the gratuitous disagrees on this yet provide the reasons why he's better.

I'm not sure you guys understand the concept of disagrees around here.

Price has more saves, more shutouts and most importantly a better save percentage. Since mid-October, that last one is even more ridiculous.

What does that have to do with which goalie's been better this year?

Price is putting up better numbers on a worse team. He's been more impressive this year, and it's not even close.

#157

jwhouk

jwhouk

BUT - if Pekka were on the Habs, they'd be doing much better. Pekka's more valuable to the Preds than Price is to the Habs.

Wins are a completely arbitrary number. It depends completely on who's team you're playing for.

Put these goalies in shitholes like Edmonton/Buffalo and that changes. Does that make them bad goalies? Nope, just really unhappy ones.

Playing for teams that score more goals affects this, as you'll get more wins. Preds have 164, Habs have 146. I'm sure those 18 goals make a difference.

Since Oct. 17 :

Rinne: 29-7-1, 2.07 GAA, .929 SV%, 2 SO
Price: 27-10-2, 1.84 GAA, .938 SV%, 4 SO

These numbers don't lie. Both are great goalies but Price is simply playing better this season.

The fact that Rinne got hurt doesn't matter, since you know, Price played similar number of games (2 more at the time of that statline). But it'll affect his Vezina chances at the end of the season baring any issues with Price's performance.

The fact that the Habs haven't won a cup in 20 something year, has, well... fuck all to do with the topic on hand. But since we're bringing irrelevant things on the table, did you know that Nashville Preds have a cat like creature logo on their jerseys?

#TheMoreYouKnow[DOUBLEPOST=1423970857,1423970551][/DOUBLEPOST]
and I'd probably also throw in that the Western Conference is much stiffer competition than the Eastern
Irrelevant to the conversation.

That myth is always in play, since the lock-out, West is 5-4 vs the East.[DOUBLEPOST=1423971390][/DOUBLEPOST]
With Pekka in net, WE HAVE 80 FREAKIN' POINTS TO LEAD THE LEAGUE.
Did he score those 20 extra goals?

Also, the defense differences are pretty staggering

;)[DOUBLEPOST=1423972093,1423971903][/DOUBLEPOST]Carter Hutton (5-4-4) is proof: without Pekka Rinne, the Nashville Predators are simply playoff contenders. With him, they are going after the Governor's trophy. That's a swing of about 18-20 points.

Carter Hutton
5-4-4 (13 games)
.905 save %
2.65 GAA
357 shots (27 shots a game)

Tokarski
5-4-2 (11 games)
.914 save %
2.67 GAA
359 shots (33 shots a game)

Kind of comparable, except for the fact Toks has more shots taken on him than Hutton does with 2 games played less.

Better D. No surprise there. :trolol:

Though your backup goalie is ass.

Still get 6 shots less a game. That's close to 0.5 less goals a game for a goalie doing .915 (league average).

Stop making sense, yo.

# of wins isn't that important of a stat to win the Vezina. The truth is the fact that the Habs are bottom 10 (#21) in scoring and Nashville is top 10 (#6). Habs are likely not going to win if Price lets in more than 2 goals. This isn't the case with the Preds. The Preds also possibly have 2 Norris finalists as well as the Calder winner as well.

Imagine if the Habs had Weber?

#167

jwhouk

jwhouk

You kinda have him, except you call him "P.K. Subban" and for some unknown reason he has a Norris Trophy while the real one doesn't.

Not that Subban has done anything to deserve a Norris Trophy this year, mind you.

The real test will be playoff time. If Price leads les Habitants to the Cup, I shall eat my words.

If Pekka does...

I probably won't be posting for a while, because I'll be floating somewhere over 5th and Broadway out of pure elation.

#168

Vrii

I have to assume this is just some knee-jerk defensiveness coming from how often Nashville was targeted for relocation rumours - no other reason the arguments would keep coming back to the Habs' history and Nashville's record this year instead of any factual analysis of the goalies' performances.

I've done a little gander at some of them, but not much digging to see if there's anything comparable to WAR. A lot of people went nuts over the "Corsi number", but I slightly think it's more helpful to line performance more than individuals.

Yeah, nobody wants to play in Toronto and it's not exactly a secret. The most intense media, the most bipolar fan base, the worst arena atmosphere... even the hometown boys by and large would rather play just about anywhere else.

Clarkson is an exception, but he's a terrible one at tat price and for that long a term. Can't believe we got rid of that contract.

I made a proposition on a hockey-exclusive message board (ironically, with the same initials as HalForums) that would affect "tanking". Basically, after the trade deadline, the bottom 14 non-playoff teams would be ranked, 14 to 1, with points. Every time they won, one of the points would be deducted. At the end, the team would get the number of points they had left deducted from their "ping pong ball" chances at the #1 overall pick.

I don't know if it would go over well with the NHL GM's, though.

I'm fairly conflicted about tonight. It'll be nice to root for the Sabres to win without feeling guilty, but I really don't want Boston to make the playoffs.

NYR vs PIT
WSH vs NYI

But I think ANA vs WIN is a Pyrrhic victory for either team

NYR gonna rout PIT.

Sabres fired Ted Nolan today. Not particularly surprising, but the GM said he didn't expect this team to come in last until the Kane trade, which is pretty absurd to think.

There's been rumours MLSE has been courting Babcock for ages now. I have no idea where the rumours started or why they apparently might actually have some weight to them, but a man can dream.

#317

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

I think it's all based on Babcock's contract being up soon and him not wanting to discuss his contract during the season. The media has taken that as a sign he wants out, but as far as I know, all it means for sure is he doesn't want to discuss his contract during the season.

Eichel has been named one of BU's alternate captain for 2015-16.

He already knew that he was likely headed to either Buffalo or Arizona - and the latter only if the Sabres would have won the McDavid Sweepstakes.

He's been cryptic in interviews, but I don't think he cares for either destination.[DOUBLEPOST=1429468989,1429468508][/DOUBLEPOST]By the way: there really isn't much difference between #1 overall and #2 overall, in terms of NHL value. I was simply using a very simple to understand metric about the health of a city. I could have just as easily cited that the entire city's population has decline by 25% in 10 years, or the current housing values or crime rate or the city's bankruptcy. All point to a very unhealthy city but due to the politics of the NHL will never be discussed openly in regards to hockey decisions.

Very talented and has a lot of potential but he was a complete disaster last year (13 points in 78 games). Defensively he might be the worst player in the league (not an exaggeration).

I think he could turn around because he'll be away from the dumpster-fire of a team that was the 2014-15 Buffalo Sabres. I'd be upset about losing him if he wasn't so expensive, so for what you signed him for, I think its a great low-risk/high-reward contract.

Sabres had their prospect scrimmage yesterday. About 17k people went, which is nice because it was $10 per ticket and all proceeds go to charity. I did not get to go, but from what I've read Eichel struggled somewhat, but also had some great moments and was on a much worse team. On the other hand it sounds like Reinhart has gotten a lot stronger and it showed, which is good because that was his big weakness for his 9 games last year.

He is. Less than $4m/season, should be good for 30+ points, and a short term - there's no risk and potentially pretty high reward. Expecting to get a Shea Weber-calibre player in free agency, let alone at that price tag, is so absurd it's not even worth bringing up.
