So, I'm trying to write a mystery story, and I ran into something that I can't find information about online.

Thus, I turn to the forum for wisdom.

Is there any way that an individual (not a law enforcement officer or a private investigator -- just an average Joe) could find out about the parole hearings and scheduled release dates for an incarcerated criminal? It's probably different from state to state, but that doesn't matter. It makes no difference, story-wise, what state the criminal went to prison in.

I'd prefer something that would leave some kind of paper trail for detectives to follow. If there's nothing that fits that bill, though, any means of finding out release dates would work. I can figure out a way to have the detectives find out about it later.

Looks like you just call them up or check that prison's website if they have one, assuming I'm reading you right.

Yup. This is public domain information. In some places they put stuff like that in the newspaper.
