American Gods

It looks like American Gods is back in development -- now for Starz. Bryan Fuller(!) is co-producing along with Gaiman. (via io9)

Dammit I am not getting STARZ

I will believe it when it actually airs.....

Though I am excited by what I am hearing

Basically what Gryfter said. I hope it actually happens and they don't screw it up.

Hailey Knight

Bryan Fuller gives me hope it will be good and sadness that he's 3 to 1 on his shows getting cancelled before season 3.

Though I still wish they'd do a Sandman show instead of movie and an American Gods movie instead of show. Doing it this way just feels backwards since American Gods was one main plot while The Sandman is a lot of stories. If we're lucky, they could segue American Gods into an Anansi Boys project without the producers insisting the characters not be black or gods. That was fucking stupid.

#6

evilmike

evilmike

The project has been given the go-ahead to enter production.

Neil Gaiman said:
I am thrilled, ‎scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious anticipation. The team that is going to bring the world of American Gods to the screen has been assembled like the master criminals in a caper movie: I’m relieved and confident that my baby is in good hands. Now we finally move to the exciting business that fans have been doing for the last dozen years: casting our Shadow, our Wednesday, our Laura...

Bryan Fuller now 4 to 0 on his shows getting cancelled. Hopefully Gaiman's success can counteract the trend.

Shadow and Laura

Mad Sweeney, Shadow, and Wednesday

I am just impressed with the casting so far. The people picked so far are damn near perfect for their roles. I am very excited.

#12

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

Probably because it's on Stars, a lot of us won't be able to watch it for a while and thus aren't as crazy about it right now.

Also since Fuller's shows keep getting cancelled, cautious optimism seems the best route.

#13

Gryfter

Gryfter

Starz is worth it though... there's this, Black Sails and Ash vs the Evil Dead. Those alone are worth but there's other stuff too.

A lot of us are already paying for various TV services. I'm not the target audience for that; my service is Netflix, I don't even have basic cable for TV. But I know others get combo-packs and that makes sense. If you're just getting a few things, that means there are other things you're not getting, so it's a matter of priorities.

You can get Starz as an add-on to Amazon Prime now, I think...?

You can get a 7-day free trial under Prime, but after that it's a monthly subscription.

Right, but you don't need any cable subscription, so it is easy to spring for a month this way.

That's probably the strangest scene (and supposedly in the series). Push through. I found it worth it.

Doesn't even need to push through; you can skip that entire scene and it has no bearing on the rest of the novel.

If you don't get the Starz channel on your cable/dish, maybe PM me your e-mail address, and I'll see about arranging for you to stand where things of this sort generally fall off trucks.

Just get Starz. Between this and Blunt Talk it's a good network.

Also, first episode was very promising.

You don't need Starz. It's on iptorrent :p

#46

Necronic

Necronic

You know I used to do that for most things, but the reality is I can afford it and I like to support good shows. If there wasn't a streaming option I would definitely torrent it though. At this point it's just easier to pay for it and have it with one easy click. Torrenting takes like....3 or 4 clicks.

I think Starz is trying to out-HBO HBO as far as explicit scenes go. Whuf.

My wife wasn't at all interested in this, but I DVRed it anyway. Got her to watch the first episode last night when we couldn't decide on what movie we wanted to watch. Now she's hooked and wants to watch the rest of them with me.

Watched that scene last night with my mom and dad who are in their late 60s, good times.

For real though that may have been the most explicit scene I have ever seen on TV.

I think I've seen one or two more explicit, but I'd be hard pressed (har) to name exactly where... HBO and porn kinda overlap in my memory. It was probably in Deadwood or Rome or maybe GOT...

but wherever it was, I'm pretty sure it was hetero. This was definitely the most explicit gay sex I've ever seen on tv, even on premium party cable.

Starz themselves got pretty close to this before with certain characters in Spartacus' later seasons. American Gods' profile is way higher though.

#57

GasBandit

GasBandit

This week's episode affected me on a very personal level for quite obvious reasons.
I really felt the turmoil and conflict in Shadow's head and heart. I don't know if, had I been in his shoes, and I had just walked in to find Pauline sitting waiting for me, whether I'd have had the strength to say "no" and walk away as he did. Even though she done me as wrong as anyone can do someone, and there's clearly no future (and a really short expiration date), I don't know.

#58

GasBandit

I get the feeling last night's confrontation/reveal/gathering of characters/epiphany had a lot more gravitas in the book - which I have to admit I haven't read, I just kinda... get that feeling. In fact, I'm starting to get the sense I'm not nearly as impressed with this show as it so very badly wants me to be.

I mean, I'll keep watching it to the end probably, but I don't think at this point I'll ever feel the need to re-watch it, unlike, say, Deadwood or GOT.

The meeting in the book was less impressive in my memory. It has been 10 years or so since I read it though. Wisconsin is where the story picks up.

Haven't seen the episode yet (I'm up-to-date otherwise), but since I have read the book:
In the book, this is the biggest "yes there's directly Gods" moment for Shadow up to that point IMO. For example, Vulcan isn't in the book (at least there's no town for him that they go to at least) so this is kind of a "big deal" for Shadow having it (mostly) out in the open for him. Before that point, it was just fucked-up-ed-ness (like dead wife, and "if I really try hard, it could all be coincidence"), after, it's more open.

So not MASSIVE gravity in the book IMO, but still an important marker for other reasons.

I really did like

the hundreds of different Jesus interpretations all hanging out at Ostara's house for an Easter party, and their brief conversations with Shadow.

I stopped reading the book after the cab driver story. I almost stopped at the vagina-eater. Too damn weird for me. I also couldn't finish GoT. I haven't watched either one, but probably won't. I DID like Stardust - the movie, but I haven't read the book.

I just looked at the synopsis. And like I thought, Shadow has been to Wisconsin and Cairo, Illinois already at this point in the book.

Going to Wisconsin is HUGE in the third part of the novel.

Other than Mr. Ibis recording things in his book, something tells me there won't be the "Gap time" of Shadow spending time in Cairo over winter in the TV series. Just seems doubtful given the time of year and such.

So apparently last week's episode was the season finale. Only 8 episodes, huh Starz? Couldn't even tough it out to 10?

I'm not sure I'll even remember to look for it next year. Maybe when it wraps up (if it doesn't get cancelled) I'll download the whole thing at once.
