I am posting this a bit early b/c of the surprising announcement from my alma mater.

Bob Stoops has stepped down as head coach. :(
http://www.soonersports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=211616668

He's like a demi-god in Norman. Only one National Championship, but the only lost at home a handful on times during his reign.

The new guy is quite young. Having new coaches at Texas and OU should make for an interesting Red River game this fall.

I really hope there isn't some scandal that Stoops is trying to get out from under. He was certainly better than Switzer in that department, but we'll have to wait and see.

#2

blotsfan

blotsfan

He's supposedly had heart issues and wanted to retire and enjoy life before anything bad happened. Not to mention coaching is a stressful job.

Is the new guy meant to be the coach going forward or just an interim for 2017?

#3

drawn_inward

drawn_inward

They're saying he's the permanent pick. We'll see how long he lasts. OU plays Ohio State early in the season. That'll be rough. If he takes down Texas, that will buy him some time. Who knows maybe he'll be a wunderkind.

Yeah, yeah...stop trying to justify your existence in the Big XII :p

Someone posted about building a conference from every team that covered your home county, plus one wild card. Here's what I wound up with:
WVU
Pitt (The Backyard Brawl is BACK!)
Penn State (about damn time we get them back on the schedule)
Colorado
Kentucky
Army
Navy
Marshall (the ONLY way they'll ever play us again)
Ohio U
Air Force
Appalachian State
Wild Card: Syracuse. (Revive the Lambert Trophy!)

#10

blotsfan

blotsfan

Heres mine:

Syracuse
Penn State
West Virginia
Colorado
Kentucky
Army
Temple
Marshall
Buffalo
Colorado State
Appalachian State

Jesus Christ the northeast is awful for football. I guess I'd put kansas in there just because being in such a trainwreck of a conference would be a severe hit to their program that already takes a lot of severe hits.

#11

Gared

Ha!

Iowa State
Nebraska
K State
Washington
Mizzou
BYU
Tulsa
UTEP
NIU
Boise State
University of Idaho

And for my wildcard I'll go with Wazzu - it keeps up the cross state rivalry with the Dawgs and it would be so incredibly apropos to watch them struggle against and/or lose to the Vandals every damn year.

#12

BErt

Michigan
Michigan State
Ohio State
Penn State
Indiana
Notre Dame
Purdue
Northwestern
Illinois
Iowa
Wisconsin
Minnesota

...oh, lookit that, it's the old Big Ten plus Notre Dame in some alternate universe that Notre Dame isn't too stuck up their own assholes to join like they should have forever ago.

Ohio State early in the season with a brand new head coach at OU. Eesh. At least Texas also has a new head coach. Should make the Red River Rivalry game a hoot!

Giving up on the run in the second half AGAIN! Why the hell does this team do this! You've been punishing them by running it down the defense's collective throat, and beating the crap out of UCLA, so... uhm... stop that... try passing on every down... that should work just fine this year, NOT. I'm starting to feel like ganging up on Sumlin to make he keep calling run plays.

#29

DarkAudit

DarkAudit

Grumble grumble...

#30

DarkAudit

DarkAudit

r/CFB has a cool concept this year. We start with this, the closest FBS stadium to every county map...

Every week, the map changes. If you win, you claim the area your opponent held. So after Week 1, the map now looks like this...

If your opponent isn't on the map, even if you win, you get nothing. So WVU won't gain any territory because East Carolina lost to James Madison last week. Thanks to OOC losses, some teams may have to wait until bowl season to reclaim their home territory. Lookin' at YOU, t.u. :p

I'd think not so much as more teams drop off the map with no chance remaining of getting territory back.

#33

blotsfan

Also this guy makes so many of these maps that at this point I'd be surprised if he didn't have some kind of script where he could assign a team for each county and it'd spit the team out.

#34

Yeah, but a team that gets beat, even if it's the last day of the season, can show up on the map.

This. The more you win over other teams on the map, the more land you hold. But if you lose, that team gets all your stuff, even if you've got the whole map covered.

And we get some free football courtesy of Boise State and Washington State. I did not think the Cougs had it in them to come back from being down 31 - 14, but I gotta say, I'm pretty impressed. Leach needs to take the conditioning coach out for a dinner of their choice, because even in double OT, the footwork on some of those defensive shifts was crisp.

I still haven't heard a rational reason to play this game in Houston. It's a 150 or so mile trip for the SFA crowd, and only about a 75 mile trip from Huntsville for SHSU. Hey, if they're making the money to do it, ok, but just don't understand a college giving up an advantage for the crowd that would show up.

Both schools have a huge alumni presence in Houston. But since SFA focused on Basketball instead of football their half of the stadium is getting pretty sparse. The first several years of the game being in NRG the crowds were even. The last five years the SFA crowds keep getting smaller.

In all actuality, I'm used to the Cougs not showing up to at least one game a season. I'm just happy this time it was a conference opponent, and not some FCS school who finishes their season 2-10 with one of those wins being against us and the other being their big (winless) rival who they beat 56-0. No, I'm not citing actual examples, that's just they way this program has been for at least the last decade or two. But last night? I'm not sure they even got on the plane in Pullman. Sure, the air quality was a little iffy, but they'd practiced and played in it before and the AQI stayed below 200 all night - and both teams were playing in the same air. You can't blame the officiating, because for once it was actually pretty consistent and whatever the "coalition" of refs in San Francisco meant, they did a pretty good job on replay as well. There were several calls that were overturned (against Cal, no less) that were absolutely right to be overturned, and a booth-initiated targeting review that deserved to be rechecked and upheld (spearing on 24 - not Bynum - on special teams). By all standards, the Cal Bears showed up, played lights-out defense, kept giving themselves chances to succeed (Falk was picked off 5 times and had a fumble, and our true-freshman RB had a fumble early), and just thoroughly and resoundingly beat the Cougs. Cal deserved that win, and the Cougs deserved that loss. Hopefully the Cougs will get their heads out of their asses and show up to the next game, but Falk's Heisman hopes are over (no big surprise there), and unless there's even more serious chaos this weekend and further down the line, the Cougs can kiss the playoffs goodbye. A Clemson or an Alabama may be able to make the playoffs with one loss, but not a Pac 12 nobody like the Cougs.

What, they couldn't find a James Madison alum that was worthy enough of their high standards had enough social media followers to be their guest picker, so they just got one of their coworkers to dress up like the man and make stupid picks because "I've been dead for 100 years!"? I know they've been losing subscribers like mad, and that little feud between them and UW's head coach about how late Pac-12 games get scheduled is completely uncalled for - and the cupcake thing was insulting. You want to talk cupcake opponents? What the fuck was Alabama doing during the early part of this decade playing teams like the Charleston Southern Buccaneers or the Chattanooga Mocs mid- to late-November? Schedules are set years in advance - you think UW was able to schedule quality OoC opponents back when Willingham and that dumbass from Notre Dame were coaching the dawgs? Fuck no! They were lucky they weren't being scheduled as the cupcake opponents for Alabama and Auburn.

He may be a Heisman contender, but he seems like a pompous prick. A bunch of OU fans talked shit about Manziel while he was at A&M, but they seem to be giving Mayfield a pass (pun intended). The coaches need to reel him in or bench him.

I think Mayfield could have handled it better. While I am happy that OU has a Heisman contender at QB again, I don't care for his actions on or off the field.
Besides the handshake just made KU look ridiculous.

Of course he could have handled it better, but the refs weren't going to do anything about the cheap shots or the taunting when he was buried under piles of defenders. Seriously, the amount of people who were worshipping Mayfield as the second coming of Favre and Manning before the crotch grab and then talking about how he just destroyed his entire career after it is mind-bogglingly large. Has anyone ever seen an NFL game? Recently? Guys sailing through the air backwards across the goal line while grabbing their crotches. Guys grabbing their crotches after kicking a field goal. Guys grabbing their crotches after a long run. It's all crotch grabs, all the way down. And swearing at the other team's bench? Seriously? I get it, it's unprofessional and crass - but if this is the sort of thing we're going to keep guys out of the league for, while we suspend them a game or two for drunk driving or 6 games for domestic abuse, maybe we're looking at all of this wrong.

I mean we've had two SECCG appearances so it's not like we've been Rutgers (by my calculations that's more Conference title games than Michigan has made in the same timespan).

I was just pointing out that it's easier to have a good record as a conference in bowl games when the CFP isn't snatching any of your top teams.

Not to mention, while we haven't played our main rival since leaving the Big 12, we've still beaten them more recently than Michigan has beaten Ohio State :D

My contention is that, with so damn many conferences in I-FBS, the National Championship committee should be told "only choose conference champions." That way it would have been Clemson-UCF in the Sugar Bowl.

And now, with the new "any I-FBS conference can have a championship game, regardless of size" rule, there's no excuse to not do it.

Rich Rod and the University of Arizona have parted ways, following a season-long investigation into a sexual harassment allegation by a former employee. I'm not posting this in that other thread because the allegation could not be substantiated following an independent investigation. However, apparently something disturbing enough to warrant a mutual separation of ways was discovered inside the football program. The university will continue to pay his salary for the remainder of his contract length. Very unexpected.

But absolutely not surprising.

Looks like the refs are all in for Alabama. In one series:

  • Missed a false start - instead called it an offsides on a blocked punt.
  • Missed a blatant facemask.
  • On the punt, they missed an illegal block in the back.
Then Alabama gets the touchdown. So let's reiterate. Should have been Georgia ball on the 15 yard line already up 13-0. Instead it's 13-7 thanks to blown calls.

A single missed call is expected. A couple on the same series is suspicious. Three in a row is just blatant.

Georgia got screwed by the refs at the beginning of the first half. Wow, and taking the reins in the battle for worst off season imaginable, University of Maryland's head coach, head football trainer, and two other staff members have been put on administrative leave effective immediately as a very "prompt" and very thorough investigation is launched into the toxic team atmosphere that resulted in a player's death back in June following liver failure from extreme dehydration and heat stroke, a failed liver transplant, and a two week coma. Head football trainer Wes Robinson is quoted to have said of the player, who was struggling to maintain consciousness during 110 yard sprints, "drag his ass across that field!" After the "walk it off method" failed to lower his body temperature, EMTs who were called to the facility called the hospital for a player experiencing a seizure. The player's seizure was unreported by the coaching and training staff in any report made to the university regarding the incident.

Other reports from current and former staff members and players describe players being forced to eat until they puke in an attempt to get them to gain weight, then eat some more; players who were deemed to be overweight being forced to sit and watch workouts while being force fed candy bars to humiliate them for being fat; players being called thieves for having been awarded scholarships and deemed to be underperforming or "not good enough" to deserve the university's money; and being called racial slurs by coaching staff and trainers alike.

You know, I remember this movie. It came out in 1998. Really dumb movie, but poignant to me at the time, because it reminded me so much of my own school sports career (we had a coach just like Kilmer, and everyone idolized him like he was GOD himself). He was driven off in a similar fashion as well - got too cruel one season and the team quit on him and stopped hiding his abuse. I would ask how we got to a place like this, but I think I know the answer pretty well by now. Money and power.

Doesn't look like things are going to calm down for OSU anytime soon - Zach Smith (fired coach at the center of the controversy) has lashed out at his ex-wife over Twitter, decrying how little concern she's had for their kids and their reputation throughout all of this... because he continues to believe that the person who needs to worry about that is the one being abused, not the abuser. Also, an OSU trustee has stepped down from the board, stating that the Urban Meyer punishment was too soft. This comes after reports were released stating that, despite his suspension, Meyer was allowed to meet with the team and attend practice on the 25th, because the decision was made to suspend him on the 24th, but he wasn't notified of the suspension until the 26th.

Edit: Apparently the trustee who resigned also left the meeting - during which the punishment was being decided - in protest, so not just talking the talk, but walking the walk.
