I think it's because they did their makeup with the stepford smiles in mind... so when their real reaction comes out, the makeup makes it look a little wierd.

I went nuts for those kinds of roller coasters in my teens. At my last trip to six flags, I hated most of them, either it jostled me around so much that it was physically painful (Magic Mountain's Green Lantern is especially terrible about this) or it just wasn't all that fun, not enough to be worth the entry fee. Is the first stage of turning into a boring adult?
