The Super Dooper Canadian Thread (now with 47% more Canadian Bacon)

Guys, Canadian Beavers were introduced into Argentina in 1940's to build a fur trade and are threatening entire towns with the flood plains created by their dams. With no natural predators they are growing over 2m and stripping forests bare to build their dams. They do millions of dollars in damage each year.

Seriously.

Horrifying and awesome at the same time.

Calgary area and SE BC folks, if we have any - check in!
The pictures of the flooding in Calgary are nuts, just checking in with the in-laws as that's where they are.

I'm from Calgary... it's a complete disaster here.

Thousands of people forced from their homes, roads and bridges destroyed all over, our saddledome is a total loss, the Stampede grounds are ruined and the downtown core has been completely paralyzed by flooding. I couldn't get to work on Friday and they don't expect us to be able to return to the downtown core until MINIMUM Wednesday.

I've lived here all my life and never seen anything like this here.

The worst part is most people will not get any insurance coverage as insurance doesn't cover "overland flooding". Fricking brutal.

Joking aside, I hope family is well.

from todays globe and mail said:
Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, who represents Calgary Southeast, said municipalities affected by the flood will assess the damage and send list of needs to the province. The province will then refine those lists and send them on to the federal government. “It will obviously be a substantial bill and we will be there to help,” he told CTV.
People talk to municipalities who talk to the province who talk to the feds. Remember that, as it always seems that people who don't get their money scream bloody murder at the feds, instead of the right people. My town of Halifax screamed and screamed and screamed at the feds over money due them for Hurricane Juan. The feds just rolled their eyes and when the province finally filled out their paperwork, everyone got their money almost instantly.

My mom in Calgary is ok, but her home is about as safe from flooding as it can get. She tells me it's fucking bananas.

The Calgary Stampede should be interesting this year.

As for the Saddledome, I heard that the water was up to the 10th row of seats. "Total loss" seems a bit strong language though, but I dunno. I haven't heard specifically.

The Nashville Arena was in a similar situation back in 2010. The Flames may not be able to start the season at home, but I'm betting they'll be able to get the Saddledome ready before November.

Gonna go take part in some good ole fashioned Candiduh Day festivities. It's...oh, 6000 degrees outside and muggy as fuck. Good thing I get to wear a heavy red wool jacket, a wide brimmed hat, giant leather boots and bulky black/blue pants or else I might actually be comfortable. Ugh, it's supposed to feel like 95 F out there this afternoon.

Happy Canada Day!
Doing fuck all today except listening to some good Canadian music.

Might be later I'll watch Canadian Bacon or re-watch the 2010 Gold Medal hockey game. For now rocking out to Trooper and Neil Young is good.

Tonight is fireworks time though. Maybe I'll bring along a flask of Tap 357- Canadian Rye whisky with pure maple syrup.

Well, me and two other guys in the serge ended up with heat stroke. I'm probably the least serious (vomited a bit), but my corporal is in the hospital right now.

I am now in my underwear with two fans on me.

SECRET PRO TIP: The Mountie serge is not great in ultra summer conditions.
