Video Game News and Miscellany

WoW's dipped under 9m subs again.

Also, HUGE FUCKING BUG in D3, trillions of gold duped and outside of some bans, no repercussions or rollbacks. So much for market stability.

Ubisoft acting like a vindictive ex-girlfriend lately.

Patrice Desilets (Creative director of Assassin's Creed 1 and 2) and Jean-Francois Boivin (Lead producer of Asscreed 1 and 2) both left Ubisoft after AC2 to form the THQ Montreal studio. After THQ's destruction and gutting, the Montreal studio was bought by Ubisoft who have now fired Desilets and Boivin (while keeping all the work they've apparently done on the two new IPs). Scuttlebutt is it's because Ubisoft purchased the studio to work on Asscreed stuff again and these two wouldn't play ball, so out they go with nothing to show for the last few years of work.
This is pretty much what DC routinely does to Alan Moore, ever since he left when it became apparent they'd never stop producing Watchmen and let him have the rights again. I think it's been... 3 times now?

So basically the new Metro game has a pre-order bonus of "hard mode" that is DLC only. (5$)

That's right, if you don't pre-order, you only get normal mode.

Angry Joe lost his shit.

I saw that video last night. It's total and complete bullshit.

It sucks, too, because Metro was a smash hit out of nowhere. It was a really great game.

Actiblizzard lays out their 2013 offerings. They really have distilled their output down to their milking moneymakers. I dunno, they do well, but this kind of strategy has already killed off formerly successful IPs like Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk.

So, 2013 - no DIII expansion, no SCII expansion, nothing new, no new single payer games? So much for my interest in Blizz for the rest of this year.

Regarding Metro: Is the pre-order bonus the ULTRA-hard mode? There's still normal/hard in the game right?
From what I can tell, there's only normal. Possibly an easy, I haven't heard any report on that. Hard mode is called Ranger Mode in Metro (or at least it was in the first game) and also drastically changes how the game plays, kinda like playing Fallout 3 on hardcore mode.

This fucking shitty console generation can't end soon enough. Sick of shit optimized to run on 7 year old hardware.

Well, there goes my desire to get Metro Last Light.

Pity, too, the first game was awesome. Sniping my way through the Frontlines level on Ranger Mode was one of the most intense experiences of my gaming life.

Alright, looking at Rev3Game's review of Metro, it still has Hardcore Mode (which is the normal hard mode). Ranger Mode is a separate option that changes how the game is played, sort of like the one in New Vegas that makes you need to eat, sleep, and drink water.

Yeah, the Ranger mode was the only way in which the first Metro was any fun. It stopped enemies from being such bullet sponges (of course, your character was much weaker also). Ranger mode had a full array of difficulty settings too, easy, medium and hard.

Nice. It is a stupid pre-order bonus but whatev.

Granted, I'm one of those vile console gamers you PC dorks loathe, but isn't the reason why games are optimized like this is so more people can run it on their system, hence more sales? It sounds like a market driven thing rather than having anything to do with those dirty, dirty consoles.

Nonsense, most gaming PCs at this point can run rings around circles around the PS3 or 360 and once in a while you get a game that shows it, like Crysis 3. Most of the time though we're stuck with low res textures and shitty ports. When the next gen consoles come out, that will change for a while.

You can have a game that's optimized for consoles and still runs well on a PC, with the basic options (like an FOV slider) that should be standard in PC games. Poor graphics options are almost always the sign of a lazy port.

Ah! Ports! Now I understand what you guys are saying. It's about stuff not being created for PC's so it's set at PS3/XBOX tech levels rather than current gen PC levels?

That and stuff that's created for PC is also designed with console ports in mind.

The worst are the unmappable keys bullshits or set FOV of less than 90 that make me want to puke after 20 minutes playing it.

Don't forget inventory systems that make you want to smash your keyboard. Oh, and "maps" that translate into forced hallways because they don't want to stress consoles too much.

I honestly can't blame the devs for a lot of this... as a developer from the former Soviet Block, these guys had an ASTOUNDING time just convincing THQ to do a 360/PS3 version of the first game, which is where the money's at. They just don't have the clout to push for business decisions yet and are kind of at the mercy of their publisher. It certainly didn't help they got shoved to Deep Silver, which I do believe is run by a holding company.

It's a shitty thing for them to do, but this is the kind of shit that developers in that part of the world have to deal with if they want to hit American markets.

Yeah, it's just a shame that they got gobbled up by a terrible publisher after THQ's fall.

From what I have heard this game shouldn't exist, and apparently it's pretty damn good. So I feel lucky.
I'm not surprised. It's most of the original team and the author of Metro 2033 wrote this scenario just for the game, as Metro 2034 was more of an anthology book of various people's lives in the Metro. There really isn't any reason it shouldn't be fantastic.

It was already mostly finished when THQ collapsed, so I'm happy that it managed to find a new home. I'm just disappointed that home is abusive.
