I figure there are a lot of bits of video game news worth a post or three, but not really enough for their own thread.

To start off, I offer the Batman: Arkham City trailer that debuted at the VGA awards tonight. Damn, I'm looking forward to this one. Arkham Asylum was great, and this trailer definitely ups the ante.

Hmm, intriguing. On one hand if the game engine is a big step up from Fallout 3, then it will probably make my system cry for mercy. On the other hand, consoles are still on the same generation, so they may not have pushed things enough to make it unplayable. I'll have to keep an eye on this one.

Good news: SSX is coming back! To current gen consoles! Bad news: ...it's a reboot. A Darker and Edgier reboot:

According to the site's official writeup, SSX: Deadly Descents tells the story of a team seeking " to be the first to descend the faces of the most treacherous mountain ranges on the planet." The globetrotting snowboard supercrossers will be shredding down the Himalayas, Patagonia, the Alps and ice ranges of Antarctica. Players will be battling both the mountain and a rival team seeking the same claim as yours.
Several internet comments are already dubbing this game "SSX: Black Ops", "Call Of SSX: Winter Warfare" and variants on the basis of a single teaser. To those people I ask this: yes, they did replace your beloved wacky characters with afros and J-pop attire with generic winter clothing wearing cyphers, but seriously how badly can an attempt to turn a cartoony arcadey game into a dead serious affair be?

...oh, right.

#11

They ARE using some interesting new technology though, which helps make the mountains you can go down as close to their real locations as possible. That's pretty cool.

Ooh ooh I have one!

How about Kratos being announced for the new Mortal Kombat game on the PS3? :D :D

#15

Yeah, I thought that was cool too. After all both franchises are steeped in ultra violence (I think God of War III might be the most violent game I ever played) so he fits right in.

That makes my decision for me. I'll be waiting until the next iteration of the 3DS, because it'll have better battery life. Without a doubt.

#30

linglingface

That depends a lot on the settings, though. That 3-5 hours is with the highest settings which I know I never use on anything. I get way more use out of my DSi than they said that battery would last.

True, but I think that one of the interesting things it depends on is the game being run, and how well optimized it is. I know that the DS gets different battery life when it's taxed versus just running basic 2D stuff, but I don't remember any talk of battery life getting better as game developers learned to better handle the system.

#32

I remember hearing too that the 3DS battery lasts 8 hours with a normal DS game, but again that's with the settings all maxed out.

Bhwuh? Direct2Drive is going to have a game rental service... on PC?

@Direct2Drive tweets:
RT @snakpakk: The rumors are true- D2D now has a rental service and it's live. Details to follow in a Gamers Unite blog post.

I'm very interested to hear the details on this one.

EDIT: Details well, as much as they're telling. $5 gets you 5 hours of play, and the $5 can be applied to purchasing the full game.

No specific mention of how long you have to use the 5 hours, or the $5 credit.

Fuck yeah, the original 2 Lufias rocked. The 2nd was better. The music was awesome. Too bad they fucked up the later portion of the series. The last few were DREADFUL.

#40

Chibibar

Interesting system. I guess the client will download the game "as you play" kinda like the new "WoW" download system except it will be in cache. So when you buy the game, the full version will be downloaded to your system. (This is a total guess) It would be "easier" to hack if a full version can be downloaded and play. I'm sure someone will figure out how to "extend" the time play off line to "unlimited"

I don't think the GBA sequels were made by the same team. I know the DS remake/reimagining of Rise of the Sinistrals was made by the same team as the original game though. It's not an RPG, but the story is the same except for a few minor differences (like Iris spends most of the game with your party instead of flying off all the time).

Pretty much this. And playing Lufia as a alternating single character japanese themed hack n slash was beyond degrading for the franchise. The originals on the SNES were glorious, everyone wanted more, we got SHIT.

I just checked the best seller list on Steam, and Magicka is #1 on the chart. It's a $10 game, #2 on the chart is Dead Space 2, which came out this week at $60. I've heard that the chart isn't ranked by numbers sold, but by dollar amounts. If so, that means that Magicka outsold Dead Space 2 by at least 6 to 1.

Congrats to the guys at Arrowhead Game Studios.

#47

Jiarn

A $10 game out sold a $60? Not too impressed by that.

#48

figmentPez

figmentPez

A game from a new developer outsells a highly anticipated and highly advertised sequel, at least 6 times over, and that doesn't impress you?

#49

Jiarn

If it were $60 vs $60? Absolutely. When Borderlands came out and broke out as huge as they did, THAT impressed the hell out of me.

When Plants Vs Zombies and World of Goo did HUGE sales, it didn't. They were cheap and quick to get.

#50

figmentPez

figmentPez

Well, I haven't seen it happen much. I never saw the charts where Plants vs Zombies did higher sales than whatever AAA $50 title it was up against on Steam. And I've been watching the charts. I've seen a lot of other hit games that were cheap, still loose out to the big titles. They might have sold more copies, I don't know, but their dollar figures didn't get them to the top of the charts when I was looking.

#51

Jiarn

I'm not sure they did, I'm simply stating situation where I personally was going to be impressed.

Ex: I'd buy a $10 good game over a $60 Big Title any day of the week, then again I'm not the "majority".

Mario and Zelda are like home cooking from your Mom: It hasn't changed much in the past 25 years, but it's still good, your memories of it make it taste better, and sometimes you just want it. Maybe its not the fanciest anymore but your Mom knows what she can do well and sticks with it for consistency's sake.

Also, your Mom is a quaint Japanese man who can seemingly turn his hobbies into gold.

My problem is that it's not a new Zelda; it's a 1996 Zelda. I'm still playing Spirit Tracks and enjoying it; if I want to play Ocarina of Time, it's on my Wii.

That said, I'm still a Nintendo whore. I won't be surprised if I'm playing Pokemon Black by the end of March.

#63

Jay

I don't mind games that are created that are inspired by creativity but ANOTHER ZELDA remake? For fuck sakes Nintendo. Put something else in your creative formula and stop being so goddamn stale.

And for the record, old stale Nintendo gaming < my mom's cooking

Not that my opinion will stop the masses of the mundane flock to buy the new generation shit DS and play titles that have been released 10 years ago. It's sad when Pokemon is the most creative thing on the DS.

Fixed that for you. Level 5 has Ni No Kuni coming out with it's strong emphasis on using a feelie to enjoy the game, while Capcom has Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, which is receiving some great praise. If anything, the DS has been the experimental platform this generation, mainly because it's so cheap to develop for.

Yeah, third party stuff on the DS is still solid. I'm salivating for Radiant Historia later this month. Atlus has overcome Square-Enix in making good RPGs; now they just need to be making more money than Final Fantasy XXIV: Garbage 012.

Pop quiz: when you hear the title Call of Juarez what is the first and/or second thing that comes to mind? Well, apparently that's what the devs are thinking too, as in yet another potentially ill conceived gimmicky makeover, the third title in the series will take place in modern day L.A. and Mexico and feature...cowboys fighting drug dealers?

http://kotaku.com/#!5754059/the-next-call-of-juarez-brings-cowboys-to-modern-day-la

I can imagine how the meeting went:

"All right: Red Dead Redemption has pretty much made making a regular cowboy game a sucker's bet so we're going to have to come up with some sort of gimmick for the next game."
"Uh, sir? I don't think that's such a good idea, it could backfire. Remember when Shellshock tried putting zombies in Vietnam?"
"Nonsense! It's our ass on the line. We need ideas, people! How about cowboys vs. zombies?"
"Been done to death, sir"
"Cowboys vs. vampires?"
"Done."
"Cowboys vs. robots?"
"Done"
"Cowboys vs. aliens?"
"Being done this year."
"DAMN IT! There's nothing we can use. Turn on the news, Jenkins. Maybe it will help me think"
"...and in International news, intensity of the conflicts between drug dealers and the police in Juarez is at an all time high..."
"BINGO!"

The only evidence for that would be Guitar Hero (which is debatable, since the whole genre dried up - possibly due to Activision's mismanagement) and Call of Duty (which is entirely subjective - some people love it, some hate it). I applaud a game that isn't giving into the pressure to have multiplayer just to have multiplayer (especially competitive multiplayer). I think some people prefer Left 4 Dead 1 because it's much easier and more formulaic, especially in Versus. Every climax has a strategy that will work near 100% of the time and it's quite hard to lose unless somebody isn't trying. Left 4 dead 2 is much more wild and dynamic, with lots more opportunities for intelligent players to take advantage of the environment.

That's not to say Left 4 Dead 1 is a bad game, because it isn't, but Left 4 Dead 2 improves on the design in just about every way.

#101

Jiarn

They wanted people to stop playing L4D1 when they added the original survivors and a L4D1 campaign to L4D2.

AshburnerX pretty much nailed why L4D1 is a terrible game to VS at all in the recent months. Almost every game, every map, ends the same ways.

I hope the new DLC comes with some more L4D1 converted maps.

The new DLC is already slated to have all of the L4D1 campaigns that weren't already converted to L4D2. That's the easy part. The hard part is balancing Cold Stream, the new community campaign, so they are having an open beta for it.

Regardless, this is some months away. We know for sure it won't be out until after Portal 2 ships, but that's about it.

I recall thinking when i started playing L4D2 that it feels different when you shoot and other small stuff like that.

The other things you mentioned are simply map design flaws and gaps in special infected gameplay that they fixed by adding the new ones etc. Nothing they couldn't fix with the previous game, in an expansion or a big content patch...

I really do wonder why they went with a whole new game instead...

It's not that different, it's mainly just some rebalancing and changing the sound effects. For instance, the pistols in L4D2 feel weaker because they have less flash and quieter effects, but they actually do more damage than they did in L4D1. Also, the shotguns became far less uber by reducing the number of infected they could penetrate (instead of having infinite penetration like the rifle).

Honestly though, I think the biggest problem people had was that they equated "continued support of the game" to mean "We're going to treat this like TF2 and give you shitloads of free stuff for years."

It's also the way they shoot somehow... it feel different... and not the guns being weaker either... and i haven't played #1 (well maybe once or twice) since i started playing #2 (like i said, i only bought the 2nd one)...

And instead they got like 1 small campaign (the one after all the bitching and moaning doesn't really count) then started treating the 2nd game like TF2... seems Valve has a thing for the number 2.

Actually, they made specific promises about what new content would be added. They said they'd add new maps, weapons and enemies. L4D1 got a new campaign, but never got new weapons or enemies like Valve had said it would.

I'm guessing you meant Dragon Age 1?
No I meant Mass effect 1, They have been incorporating some elements from the Mass Effect series into DA, and I was worried they were going to taint DA into me not liking it so much. I have not played ME2 yet so I don't know if they improved much there but I really hated the AI control system in it which seemed to make my AI allies pretty useless damage sponges. The demo showed me that they did not hurt the DA series too much as I can still control my AI allies pretty good, and the dialgue wheel does not seem as misdirecty as in ME1.

#122

How is the combat compared to DA:O? Is it more fast paced?!

They're still useless unless you control them each step of the way, but at least they have individual move commands straight from the keyboard in ME2...

Otherwise they made them more needed using the most annoying method of making your character have problems with certain protections the enemy has, unless you play a soldier (or have the proper DLC weapons).

That is good to hear I quit playing ME1 for a bit because it annoyed me so so I may give ME2 a try when it goes on sale next now as well.

Seems to be they infused some God of War like animations into the combat. Controls are not bad though the camera control playes a little different then in the first one(I did not rebind so it would be more fluent if I bound to my usualy control scheme) You can control each member still and the skill trees are more of a web and some were locked out in the demo so I am not sure how skill trees will pan out in feel by the mid-end game range I only managed to get a few abilities. Aoe Spells seem not to hurt your friendlies though, that will be good for some people bad for others depending on if you are pro or against FF.

It seemed more fast paced overall but the demo only really has snippets of combat as part of it is the intro part of the game. So far IMO the game is looking good. I am not sure if they included the AI behaviour tree that they had in number 1(I never tried it because I disabled it in DA:O as I am a micro manager in these games.)

#125

Allen who is Quiet

They included the AI behavior controls. They also automatically update them. When I gave Bethany "Heal", the game automatically filled in tactics slots that said "Ally < 25% Health: Heal" and "Self < 50% health: Heal"

Actually i was more interested in the combat in the first one, as i haven't played it yet... finished the demo twice already and the combat is too fast... so i have to either button spam or pause for every action... both are not my preferred method.

I don't see that as being any more game breaking than the Battalion's Backup, which gives 35%-damage reduction and immunity to crits. I think it depends on what the Concheror (sp?) takes to build up. I don't find it easy to build a charge on either of the previous soldier backpacks, and if the requirement is high enough for this new one it won't be going off all the time.

Valve added new weapons, which people liked. They dropped at random, which people did not like. So, a relatively simple way of taking unwanted extra weapons and making wanted ones seems logical.

I'm glad they backed off the requirements for most weapons. A lot of those recipes were too costly.

Also, I knew it! The katana did have a bug that was giving it an increased crit chance! And a lot of melee weapons got a nerf. Nintendo was hoping to surprise everyone in June with this. There is no way we're getting confirmation from them for it until then. However, it is coming in from more than one source and it all happened very recently. Apparently Nintendo is showing off the console to developers well in advance so they can get them started on games for launch. It's supposed to be less gimmicky, so it's likely that it's going to be focusing on more than motion controls this time around.

We've never gotten that kind of confirmation from a company until after a big event, mainly because it absolutely kills sales. The latest redesign Sony did for their console was denied until the next convention, despite photographic evidence of it's existence. Nintendo did similar with the 3DS.

The only way I could see a HD screen on a controller being worth it would be if somehow the system was the controller, and all the game media is digital, and there's some kind of wireless interface to send video to the TV or something.

...How do you do that with fucking 40k? Nobody gets along! I'm guessing they'll have multiple Imperium bits somehow working with Eldar against Chaos who have tricked the Orks into working with them.

That was for a single brief campaign; it's quite a stretch to me to see them working together for the length of an MMO's varied missions.

I don't see why it has to be two. Even DAOC had three. Everyone's terrified of breaking from WoW anymore.

Having split factions in WoW is bad enough. Split factions are pointless. It completely alienates an entire half or more of a servers population from being able to group/raid/quest with. You can still easily have PVP without split factions. It's stupid concept and I wish people had learned about how well factions worked with the Everquest system.

I disagree, DaoC lived off its Realm system. There was alot of realm pride before they allowed cross servers to happen. However I would say you do not need factions in a pvp mmo.

City of Heroes got along just fine with it's Hero and Villain division, and it's even better now that they've included ways to switch sides. Don't even blame DaoC's current pop on the faction system. It was primarily a PvP game, Everquest, WoW, and UO while have PVP elements were primariuly PvE games iirc that had pvp elements inthem.
Mordred and Andred, were non factioned(in Essence) PvP realms in DaoC and they shut one down pretty quickly and Mordered always had a releatively small population compared to Factioned realms.
Factions only really deter in PvE where factions don't play more then for RP sake as opposed to gameplay sake.

Personally I'm hoping it's LucasArts. I want a copy of Grim Fandango that's easy to get running on Windows 7.

Preview from Shacknews

Consider her something of a special guest star; providing a new experience for about 10% of the game.
Catwoman isn't just a re-skinned version of the playable Batman. She moves with a lighter and somewhat speedier touch, but doesn't pack quite as heavy a punch. Her whip swing allows her to get around somewhat like Batman's grappling gun, but the range is much shorter. She also has a "thief mode" not unlike Batman's detective mode except that it only highlights things she'd be interested in stealing, which makes Catwoman a little more challenging to play in situations. She does, though, have an equalizer in the ability to use her claws to climb the walls and crawl on the ceiling.

The new GOG publisher is EA? wut...

If I could get to GOG.com I'd try and figure out if any specific games were announced, but the site isn't responding.

EDIT: 25 games are going to be added, the first three/four are: Wing Commander: Privateer, Dungeon Keeper and Ultima Underworld 1+2.

EDIT2: After that comes: Crusader: No remorse, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and Magic Carpet.

SMAC had better include Alien Crossfire. I'm buying it if it does, I've never played the expansion.

EDIT3: No System Shock. That really sucks.

Alien Crossfire is not included. *Bleh* I still have my SMAC disc, I won't be buying from GOG. It doesn't even come with a soundtrack, wallpapers or the novelization. Just the game and the manual.

I can see one way to redeem themselves, and that's by putting a new price option for GOG, a $3 expansion pack. Release SMAX, have it bundled with SMAC for $9.99 and let people who've already bought SMAC upgrade for $3.

If it's $6.99 for the expansion, screw them.

Here I was deriding the 3DS, noting how it has such a crap line-up and the only good stuff are remakes of N64 titles, including everyone's object of affection Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It's one of my favorite games, but enough--was my opinion.

Then I read on Amazon and realized it wasn't just about putting it in stupid ass 3D. I completely forgot about it being like a normal DS game, with touch screen functionality. Damn. I will have to get a 3DS next model and OoT after all.

I know 20 free digital games is quite nice but I still find it mildly annoying that they are doing such a drastic price cut so short after the launch. They could have had released the system at this new price or very near the new price back when it first came out. We all knew they were over charging for the system but this price cut so close to launch just helps to reiterate how much they were gouging us early adopters. And as I said earlier 20 free digital games is very nice and I know they really didn't even have to do that but it still annoys me cause I would have preferred choosing what I wanted to do with that extra money.

So Shego, if you end up enjoying Persona 3: FES and want to try the sequel, it might be worth it to get a Vita for the new version.

As you may or may not know, Starbreeze is making a new Syndicate game. However, they decided to go the X-COM route and turn it into an FPS. But while the fans were shouting "BETRAYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!", Paradox of Magicka and Mount and Blade fame decided to do something far more productive: announce their own ripoff spiritual sequel!

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/09/21/paradox-announce-cartel-interview/

I have to admit, I never played Syndicate (though my older brother did quite enjoy it back in the day) so I'm not outraged about the new direction. However, I did enjoy Magicka and hopefully Paradox can make a decent game.

Arkham City is being pushed back to November on PC. November is a God damn typhoon of video games as is so it looks like, to me anyway, that AC is going into the Steam sale waiting list. They gave no reason for the delay, but I'd assume it's to stem DEM PC PIRATZ! When the game sells poorly on PC in the most crowded fucking month for games in years they can blame it on pirates too and justify not having to lower themselves to making pc ports altogether since it really seems like developing for PC has become a real emotional burden on both developers and publishers.

It is easy to blame pirates when it can't be "proven" ;)

I see other games where it is more fun and CHEAPER are selling like hotcakes. If devs make a good game, people will buy them.

People will pirate regardless so they are not "losing money" since most of them aren't gonna pay for the game at any price in the first place.

Sad but true. What's left of Interplay is being sued by Bethesda because they didn't agree to let them go ahead with the brand they now own. Considering Interplay is in ruins and has proven utterly incompetent for the last 15 years or so, Bethesda doesn't want them to release anything Fallout branded because it's going to inevitably devalue their property.

Also because Bethesda wants to make the MMO themselves.

#329

Bethesda seems to be losing that fight seeing as how when the rights were purchased in the first place they didn't get the MMO rights.

Yeah, Bethesda doesn't have a leg to stand on. They're just stalling and hoping to keep the litigation going long enough to cause Interplay to collapse completely.

I know I shouldn't be rooting for Interplay seeing as they are and always have been so shortsighted and incompetent but I just can't bring myself to dislike them. So many of my favorite games came out of Interplay in the 90's. The Fallouts, Baldur's Gateseseses etc. Hell, they were the publishers for Blizzard's Blackthorne and Lost Vikings, two of my favorite SNES titles. The Interplay logo still warms MY GOD DAMN HEART.

This will almost assuredly happen. Bethesda releases multiple hits a year, while Interplay hasn't made any money since they sold off most of their properties. Ether Interplay collapses from fighting or they sell the MMO rights to Bethesda for a tidy sum.

Yeah, that was an utter dick move. Especially on Kotaku's part who posted the spoiler in an ARTICLE'S TITLE. That said:

Every article is claiming that the Rocksteady reps specifically called attention to the Joker's "death" and refused to answer any questions. So my guess is that everyone thought it was OK to spoil since 90% of gamers will reach that point and say "Oh come on! He's not REALLY DEAD! At least THIS early!". I was mostly being smartassed... in that the game's art style is clearly anime-ish, "cartoons are for kids," and "hentai is anime porn," and thus any cartoon/anime matter that involves any adult-oriented/sex-related content at all qualifies.

From what I understand, it's basically about as porny as a "brief nudity" R-rated film.

Goonswarm Shocks EVE Markets
from Terra Nova by Edward Castronova
More evidence that an MMO can look like the real world! Compare the Enron saga to the following story sent in by Goonswarmer endie. Thanks endie!

***
Basically, this is about some emergent gameplay that we in Goonswarm (it's always Goonswarm) are running right now. It requires a touch of background for the non-Eve player, but is fairly easily comprehensible to the non-Eve constituency. There are three basic things to understand:

1- In Eve, "POS Towers" (essentially small space stations) are at the core of much manufacturing, being used to react various compounds to make the building blocks of advanced construction. Of the four Eve races' towers, by far the most efficient for this task are Gallente. Gallente towers are thus used almost exclusively for high-end compound reactions. Without the results of these reactions - many essential items from interdictors to jump freighters - simply cannot be built.

2 - Gallente towers use a specific type of ice which is predominately mined in Gallente empire space (it spawns in a few other places but is economically unrewarding to mine there until prices become vastly higher). By filtering on various criteria, we were able to determine that only seventeen of all of Eve's thousands of systems were suitable for the methods used to mine almost all Gallente ice (automated botting by large numbers of ice-mining accounts). I'll spare you the details of what those criteria were unless you are particularly interested.

3 - The automated bots use ships that themselves require at least thirty or so hours of mining to pay for their own capital investment, when fitted. Ironically, they rely on CCP's own mechanics for protection: if you shoot them in empire space then "Concord" (an external, invincible force of NPCs: essentially town guards) will spawn very quickly and destroy you. However, it is possible to fit certain ships so as to deal sufficient damage sufficiently rapidly to destroy one or more miners before Concord arrive. For obvious and predictably tasteless Goonswarm-cultural reasons this is known as Jihading.

We have therefore announced and begun a campaign aimed at preventing anyone mining for Gallente ice in Empire space. Since we have thousands of members, we have proved able to shut ice-mining operations down almost entirely.

Although prices have already risen dramatically and proceeded to fluctuate wildly (I can provide graphs if you want) we estimate that this is not yet because of a genuine shortage in reserves of ice, but mainly down to panic-buying, deliberate price tampering (by us: we bought up stocks in advance of the campaign) and short-term shortages. We think that the lead time for buying is usually a week and that most major players have between two and three weeks of stocks in reserve. After that is used-up the knock-on effect on a range of items will be fun to watch: unreacted moon minerals will drop; moon reaction output will rise; other components (such as datacores) used in "Tech 2" manufacturing will presumably fall, while the finished products will become more expensive. This will affect virtually all of the hundreds of thousands of Eve accounts.

As someone working for an oil- and energy-market research company I've been watching the related price shock, market hysteria, speculation and rumour-fed manipulation with delight and a strong sense of déjà vu. One post I made in the Goonswarm alliance director forums before we started kinda sums it up in formal terms:

"What [a fellow director] is saying is that while there is a limited degree of elasticity in supply, short- and medium-term spare capacity is inadequate to replace any interruption of current productive capacity, demand is extremely inelastic in the short term, bunkers are inadequate for any prolonged shortage and the cost of removing dependence is high both in immediate terms and in the context of ongoing costs. The market is therefore extremely vulnerable to price shock."

And there aren't many MMOs you can say that about.
***
No there aren't! But now if someone asks me whether an important policy and regulatory issue can be replicated in a virtual world, I can say that some players replicated energy market manipulation just for kicks.

GOG.com is teasing the next game to be added to their catalog. Their clues are:
- I've seen the future of GOG, and it looks...kind of purple.
- Predicting tomorrow's release involves numbers between 419 & 451

Voters on Facebook seem to think that it's Day of the Tentacle, but that seems like wishful thinking to me. The forum thread on GOG.com is guessing Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy, but that game is from 2005, and doesn't seem old enough for GOG's catalog.

That seems to be Quanticdream's biggest problem: They can tell a story and they have the technology to present it well, but they take WAY too fucking long to deliver because they are absolute perfectionists. Even if they'd had time to present what happened with better pacing, it would've still gone off the rails and been stupid. If you look to earlier in the game, they were clearly intended those batshits changes of plot from the start; just not perhaps those changes in tone. I'm sure the whole police investigation would've factored into later things more than it did, but nonetheless, the change in plot focus was stupid and would've been so no matter how well it was told.

GSC (makers of S.T.A.L.K.E.R) is likely closing it's doors. This means Stalker 2 is most likely not going to happen. This is most likely because they kept failing to close deals for a console version and because of how hard it is for publishers in Eastern Europe to get published in the West.

However, there IS another rumored reason: The Ukrainian government (which is one of most corrupt in Europe) was going after the company's profits, as it was one of the most profitable companies in the country. This is certainly not out of the question, as things like this have happened before to other companies there. The current rumor is most of the dev team might be leaving the country to set up shop somewhere else.

I would tend to agree. I think redesigns are 'okay' but they went far too overboard on a very ugly aesthetic under the pretense of 'realism'. Honestly, they're transforming robots from outer space, I don't think it's hard to have a throw away line to mass transference or some such pseudo-science to explain why cog A doesn't exactly align to gear B. And making complex-to-transform toys limits your market significantly to dextrous nerds like myself instead of kids. The fact it takes 10 minutes to transform something limits 'play' quite a lot.

Gamefly has announced a new Unlimited PC Play portion to it's subscription. Right now the games look to be about the caliber of those that are found on GameTap, which is to say you'd be hard pressed to play enough games to make it a better option than shopping Steam sales (even if you never replay a single game). I was pretty happy with Gametap for a while. Especially during the period that Gametap was the only legitimate place to get Baldur's Gate without paying an arm and a leg for a used physical copy. Then I started keeping track of Steam sales, and realized most of the games on there could be had for $10 or less, and for keeps to boot. After that GOG.com kept expanding it's catalog, while Gametap's slowly shrunk. I canceled my GT subscription just in time (I'd been reluctant to let it go, since I was grandfathered in at $60 a year). Not long after I quit they lost a huge chunk of their library, and they've been adding mostly crap for new games ever since.

Some of Ubisoft’s PC Games Won’t Work Next Week. Not Even Singleplayer.

Kotaku said:
Next week, Ubisoft will be moving around some of its servers. What this means for those of you saddled with Ubisoft PC (and Mac!) games that have restrictive DRM is that, in some cases, your games won't work while the move takes place. At all.

PC games affected include Tom Clancy's HAWX 2, Might & Magic: Heroes 6 and The Settlers 7. Mac games similarly going all busted will be Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell Conviction and The Settlers.

Those games above will be completely inaccessible while the move takes place. Worryingly, there's no ETA on how long the move will take place.

In addition, the multiplayer components of many Ubisoft games, both on PC and console, will be "impacted" as well.

This is exactly why I refuse to buy games with this type of bullshit-DRM. It may not be a terrible inconvenience to not have games while maintenance is going on, but it's also completely unnecessary. One more case of "Hi, we're going to give you a worse experience than the pirates are enjoying, and we don't care that you're one of the honest people who pay for our games."

Oh, and console gamers, you won't be able to be smug for long. This type off DRM is coming for you too, if there isn't enough complaining about the PC version. The next generation of consoles is going to support measures that can lock-out used game sales, and you'd better believe they'll have the capability to require this type of DRM as well.

Damn!

Curious what that'll do to Gamestop and its ilk though. Actually, I can see this hurting sales overall. A lot of people buy games with the knowledge that they can then trade them in and probably get back half what they spent, thus funding new games. In this case, those people are only going to buy games they want to keep, especially with the rising cost of games overall. And actually, what about the game rental market?

I don't know; Fig. I don't think things are going to stretch as far as the DRM the PC currently has simply because it could have repercussions on the company's earnings. Not to mention, it'll lead to more piracy and cracked consoles. I could see it happening with EA and Ubisoft, but likely other companies will use that as reasons to purchase their games instead.

That made me wonder, has there ever been an advertisement for a PC game that said, "When we install onto your computer, we only install a game and nothing else," and used it as a selling point?

And if not, how long until we're at that point?

Curious what that'll do to Gamestop and its ilk though. Actually, I can see this hurting sales overall. A lot of people buy games with the knowledge that they can then trade them in and probably get back half what they spent, thus funding new games. In this case, those people are only going to buy games they want to keep, especially with the rising cost of games overall. And actually, what about the game rental market?

I'll admit to some FUD on my part. I don't really know what's being planned, but it's pretty clear what's being thought about. Consider that Gamestop bought up Impulse, and Gamefly bought up Direct2Drive. The biggest name in used games, and the biggest name in game rentals both now own digital distribution systems, when neither has a history of caring much about the PC side of gaming. To me that's a signal that they're hedging their bets about the direction future console generations may take, and that's good enough reason for me to remain skeptical as well.

Even Forbes is reporting that the next Xbox will restrict play of used games.

As for "repurcussions on the company's earnings", logic like that didn't stop Nintendo from killing off the "Player's Choice" line of games, because they didn't want gamers to expect games to regularly drop in price. That obviously cut into their total sales, because they now have "Nintendo Selects" games that are the same thing, but they still tried it fully thinking that they could get more people to buy at $50 if older games didn't drop in price. Monumentally stupid, if you ask me, but somehow that seemed like the right choice to Nintendo execs. I imagine the same will hold true for any console game publishers who try to bar used game sales, or impose always-on internet connection DRM. They'll think they can force customers to buy new at the price-point the publisher chooses, but hopefully there won't be enough blind fandom to support their decision.

To be fair, all they're doing is quoting the original Kotaku article that made the claim. I have a hard time believing that MS and Sony would do such a thing, because used game sales is exactly the kind of thing that helps prolong console lifecycles. Plus, that might be a violation of the first-sale doctrine.

Far more likely that we'll simply see more games as digital-download-only or widespread use of online passes (which, within reason, I'm not really against).

That said, as pez pointed out with Nintendo, it wouldn't be the first time a console maker did something monumentally stupid.

That would effectively put Gamestop out of business, which I'm sure some of you guys are cool with, but to me there would be something kind of sad about seeing the last of that kind of store go out of business. Kind of an Old Yeller moment.

That said it would totally help blow up PC games. With the direction that Steam is going and the fact that an entry level gaming computer can cost as low as 500$ this move could push a massive amount of players over to PC.

Really, why hasn't the CEO been fired half way through the stocks going from 30$ to under 1$?
When I first read this and the stock quote I assumed that there had been some splits or something in that time period that pushed the stock price low like that, but there wasn't. I can not for the life of me understand how it's price is that low; the market cap for the company is a paltry 44 million dollars. I mean, they have some of the best gaming IP out there (homeworld, games workshop, company of heroes etc) and 5 studios. I would think that between the hardware and IP alone you could easily see the 44 mil.

But when you look at their list of games you can tell that there is something seriously wrong with them. 90% of their titles are crappy one shot movie games, which I have a hard time believing ever recoup their costs.

I would argue that they are already priced at a reasonable rate right now. You can get a good 50 hours of entertainment out of a good game. At 50$/game that comes out to 1$/hour. There isn't another form of entertainment that cheap (except for going to the park, that's free, unless you're murdered). That said its a high barrier for entry for each game, and there needs to be some kind of netflix alternative for gamers that are willing to pay a monthly fee to play older games that aren't moving off the shelves, but are still fun.

Steam has already done a lot towards this with the crazy sales they have as well as the new game trading ability.

I'd love to see how the ratio of $50 games are over 40hrs and how many of them are under 15hrs. Cause I'm pretty sure it's heavily in favor of the latter. Making it a horrendous form of entertainment / value.

Well yeah, some games suck. It's up to the consumer to be a bit more savvy and not just buy based on hype. In the last 3 years or so I don't think I have bought a single game that wasn't worth the money I paid for it (<1$/hr entertainment). That's true for any product though.

There have been many many games over the years, many forgetable. Mostly because games that are finished in 1-2 sittings are not my type of game. There's a reason I'm still playing Skyrim. Why I go back again and again to games like Mount & Blade (over 200 hours played) or Minecraft. These are open, non-linear worlds that you can explore and do whatever you want. Even games with heavy plots like Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect can easily take 30-40 hours to play.

Games like Star Wars Force Unleashed to that takes half an evening to finish is not acceptable.

Yet as we saw in the past, many companies are making shorter games, simply because with stats, they can tell 90% of people don't finish games. And since they don't finish games... why put all that time and effort when smaller games can be created?

#419

#420

figmentPez

Personally I think the question of a game's value is a lot more complicated than dollars per hour. Batman: Arkham Asylum may have taken me more hours to complete than Tales of Monkey Island, but I was still very happy to pay $37 pre-ordering ToMI, more than the $25 I paid for B:AA when it was on sale. Some games or genres I'm want to be long and meandering adventures, others I'm fine with being shorter experiences. I'm very happy the market is expanding, not only in number of customers, but also in the ability to have a broad range of price-points, and the realization that it's okay to have games drop in price over time, with people still willing to pay for immediate access.
Added at: 11:20

Oi! It's the DLC (that never drops in price) that really gets me. Someone was trying to convince me that complaints about DLC are just whining, and that we get more content than ever in games. Yeah, sure. Compare Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast expansion to all the mission DLC for Mass Effect 2 (both Bioware games). ToSC had an MSRP of $20 and added 20 - 30 hours of gameplay, with numerous refinements. All the DLC for ME2 costs $40 (because it has to be bought with Bioware Points bought $10 at a time), and adds less than 11 hours at most. Yeah, we're getting so much more with DLC these days than we used to.

EDIT: and before someone calls me on my using dollars per hour in my comparison of BG:ToSC to ME2 DLC, I meant that more as a comparison to the relative value of the expansions to the gameplay cost of the main game than a comparison of dollar value across genres.

I don't mind DLCs... as long as it's never a Day 1 DLC. I do agree on their pricing as well.

Good being the operative word. People who buy games and then like them a lot rarely have issues with the amount they paid; it was low enough, in the end, to keep their experience worth it.

Good games are not the issue; uncertainty about whether something is good or not, is. It's fairly easy to determine that $60 is a good price for a game like Arkham City or Skyrim; with the enormous buzz around them and the proven franchise strength, you're not going to have to work too hard to convince enough people that they're worth the $$. Same thing with MW3; much as some folks here hate those games, the franchise strength and ability of the game to bring exactly the same experience as what came before justifies the asking price.

Why did Heavy Rain or Alan Wake come out at $60 (both good fucking games, IMHO)? Relatively little pre-launch buzz, dismal sales for both of them, if you don't count Alan Wake being given away for free with new Xbox's last year, and huge piracy rates. Things should be priced where enough people would buy it; if you can't reach that enough point, then you screwed up on the math and need to re-adjust, not blame pirates and add annoying DRM. (I know we agree on that point, just sayin').

Most of the games I buy are open ended, which allows for a lot of play throughs, and I also focus heavily on games that I know ahead of time will get hit with a lot of mods (Skyrim/Mount and Blade) so I never have to purchase DLC. But I do still buy a few games from time to time that are completely linear and not even that long, but are so well constructed that it is a joy to play through them multiple times (Ninja Gaiden or the original Tenchu games for instance. I STILL play the old Ninja Gaiden). And then of course there are multiplayer games that provide years of play (if you are smart enough to get a good one like BF3.)

I'm still sticking with my original view that the value/dollar is high enough in a lot of games that I simply can ignore any of the ones that do stuff I don't like. I have a very high degree of loyalty to a few production houses because I know I will get my moneys worth. For any of the others I spend a fair amount of time weighing the reviews I am hearing before I rush out and buy it.

Honestly I can't remember the last time I felt like I didn't get a good deal on a game. It was probably Fable 2 or the original Mass Effect, both of which I bought without trying based on hype alone. This need for new is a big part of the problem as well, and I think it's why I bought those two games. But now I've hit a point that I can coast through and buy 2 games a year or so and in the meantime I will just play Jagged Alliance and Mount and Blade mods, 2 of the highest value games ever made. And 2 games that I doubt half of the people here have ever played, all the while complaining about how overpriced games are when there are amazing games that are close to free out there.

Yes, they fortunately didn't lose any money on it (like they apparently did for Indigo Prophecy). But when 30% of your players pick it up used, you lost a huge opportunity. Naturally, you won't get all of them, but considering Gamestop's (and Target's and Wal-mart's, etc.) tendency to price used games at only 5 bucks under MSRP, there's an excellent argument there for being less bullish on price.

And then there's Steam, which is a huge argument for that by itself.

Prices are determined by what people are willing to pay at that point in time, not what they paid for similar products 20 years ago (dear god, it really is almost 20 years), and when the "5-10 bucks off retail" used market is reputedly eating a third of your lunch, and you specifically don't like it, staying inflexible on your price point isn't the best place to stay.

A mod of their game that they provided the content development tools for, using their EULA, which they then had televised tournaments for at their branded convention for years.

If they were trying to establish ownership, I would agree it's too spotty, but it appears more that they're simply trying to block Valve's ownership of the trademark by claiming an emotional association with the brand as well as a functional association to the name (the Ancients in question).

If this game could have the emotional impact on me that FC2 did, with that level of contemplative storytelling, interspersed with similarly exciting combat, I am so sold. Normally such a barrage of foul language and brutal violence wouldn't endear me to a game, but FC2 used it's baser elements to very good effect in a tale about what violence does to men. Far Cry 3 looks like it's going to examine some similar themes, as well as look at trying to stay sane in the face of madness. It's shocking, but I have hope that the story will actually treat it as shocking; and that intrigues me greatly.

Honestly, it's all about having the second stick for Monster Hunter. If the franchise didn't move so many units, we'd have never seen it come out.

I'm still just waiting for the selection of games to be a little less anemic. I really only own 4 3d games for it. LoZ:OOT, Mario World, Street Fighter, and PilotWings (FYI, don't bother). Though, being in the ambassador program(ie, getting totally ripped off on the pricing of the system) they did make a good showing of VMware.

Is it weird that I absolutely despise Microsoft as a PC gamer? Apparently Remedy may still have to do more convincing to get Alan Wake's American Nightmare ported to PC.

.......fuck you Microsoft.

You expect your unified Windows 8 Xbox Live-esque horseshit to fly with PC gamers after your treatment of the platform for the past decade? Fat fucking chance.

I think it'll be much easier for them to convince Microsoft for American nightmare. It's budget price will appeal to the Steam crowd.

I still haven't forgiven Microsoft for ditching Mechwarrior for that mech assault crap.

I always considered Mech Assault to be the arcade style alternative to Mech Warrior: Fun in it's own right, but I'd still rather be playing the original. Hopefully the online one coming out doesn't suck.

It didn't help that the last Mechwarrior Game, (4 mercenaries) ended on a cliffhanger about the Word of Blake, and so I had to read about what happened next online instead of "experiencing it myself" in game. Because I refuse to buy a console when I have a PC that outperforms any console in all ways.

Wait, MechAssault did the Jihad? *interest up*

The first one did... the next two dealt with stuff I stopped reading about after the first couple sentences.

Origin now automatically adds EA games you previously bought on Steam to your account. The spyware still bothers me enough to avoid getting it but at least this makes ME3 being an Origin exclusive a bit more bearable.

...on the other hand, it's a sad day indeed when we commend a company for not making us buy the same game TWICE.

I suspect this is a prelude to EA removing ALL of their games from Steam. They still think Origin is a success, despite it's young age and limited library.

I am only using Origin for Mass Effect 3 (and reluctantly so).

If I have a boxed PC copy of Mass Effect 2 is there a way for me to import those save files into origin's Mass Effect 3?

Huh. I hope they figure out a good way to handle the controls. That was one of my favorite dreamcast games for a while.

It's another reason while I may just need to bite the bullet and pick up a controller for my pc.

I've gotten a ton of use out of mine. In fact, I'm used my Madcatz wired 360 controller so much that it's shoulder buttons have gotten mushy and the analog sticks are a little off. So I replaced it with a wireless Microsoft 360 controller for Windows when it was on sale recently. I don't anticipate a shortage of games to play with it.

Word. I don't use my wired 360 controller for Windows much, but when I do (for games like Spiral Knights), I really like having it.

I kind of wish Microsoft wouldn't be such douches and make a wired version of their improved 360 controller or at least release the fucking thing with the PC wireless dongle adapter thing rather than making us buy one of the shitty original wireless controllers with dongle. But Microsoft and not being PC douchefucks does not go together.

It's D-pad isn't complete and utter shit like the regular controller.

Fair enough. I don't use the D-pad much, but then I don't play SSFIV at all.

Buy the wireless adapter dongle separately.
