Video Game News and Miscellany

Guess which classic video game is getting an animated series!

No, wait, don't bother, you'll never guess because why the fuck is Golden Axe getting a series in 2024?
Because people have never stopped wanting to see more of Tyris Flare.

... or maybe that's just me?

On a side note, seeing Liam McIntyre in the cast list made me realize that I've basically not seen him in anything since Spartacus, and a quick gander at his Wikipedia page shows that he's mainly a voice actor now? Huh, cool, good for him.

Okay, I assume this is Comedy Central belatedly trying to rip-off imitate the Castlevania series Netflix did.

Hmm, I wonder if Sega started work on a new Golden Axe game because they knew this was potentially happening, or if CC just asked for something like Castlevania & Sega thought "hey, if we give them the GA license we can cross promote with our new game we're working on".

Cities Skylines 2 dev offers refunds, makes DLC free, apologizes

After a bad launch, and following it up with a horrendously disappointing DLC, they're now giving that new Beach Properties DLC for free and refunding anyone who bought it. Anyone who bought the Ultimate Edition will get free content worth $39.95 down the line.

I was on the verge of buying C:S2 at launch, but man, I'm glad I waited. I still haven't bought it and I'm not in any rush now.

Before it released, I made myself a personal promise not to buy C:S2 until they brought back cycling and cycling infrastructure. I get the feeling I'll be waiting a long while. If it ever comes back, hopefully the game is greatly improved by that point.

For those of you like me who play the shit out of 7 Days to Die, after 15 years of early access the game is going to 1.0.

Having been playing since Alpha... 9 or 10 (or whatever it was in late 2014) and over 1400 hours in game, it's been a long road to 1.0 / Alpha 22.

For those who haven't played it yet - it's on sale on Steam for 76% off until April 29 before the price will increase for full release.

I think I posted about this before, but NoClip found hundreds of tapes that were going to the dumpster. They're filled with footage for trailers, past gaming events like E3, etc,. Stuff that either isn't available anywhere anymore, or in a poor quality. They've been pouring through the footage and posting it on a separate YouTube channel, No Clip Game History Archive.

They posted an update on the project today, on what they've discovered, and the struggles along the way. He mentions they found the original footage and trailer for the first Half-Life 2 gameplay footage, a lot of which was scrapped and retooled after Valve was hacked.

For preservation purposes alone, this whole project is kind of amazing.

Helldivers just shot themselves in the foot. Forcing Steam users to link their Steam profile to a PSN account to be able to play. Problem is, PSN is only available in 69 countries. Guess you are shit out of luck if you aren't in one of those countries. Sure, you can probably register using a available country, but once Sony for some reason gets wind of it, your account will be banned.

I feel bad for the devs, as this is entirely Sony forcing the issue. They are the publisher of the game, but it's more popular on steam than it is on their own console, so they want to bump those numbers.

The sad part is, this could have been avoided very easily. Instead of forcing a psn account after 3 months of not needing one, they could have just offered something cool as a reward for linking a psn account. People would have voluntarily done so for the shinies, but trying to force it? Yeah...

Not to mention what this means for people who don't even own a PlayStation, I assume.

You don't need to own a playstation, you can make an account on the playstation website (assuming you are in a country that is allowed to do so)

I had no interest in the game, but holy shit, this went to hell in a handbasket so fast. This might be the biggest Steam debacle since the Arkham Knight PC release. I'm curious to see if this backlash will have any effect.

The game already went from a Very Positive score to Mostly Positive (and Mixed for recent reviews).

The truly sad thing is... the game is great. It's incredibly fun, it's cheap (retail is only $40 US) and though it does have battlepasses and micro transactions, they're incredibly consumer friendly, with the battlepasses never expiring and the premium currency you have the option of buying for skins and stuff also being very easily earned in game just through playing. The devs are passionate about the state of their game, with the only real problem they run into being that they're a smaller team and sometimes have trouble keeping up with the bug fixes and communicating the patch notes.

So for the game's publisher Sony to come in and wreck what is ostensibly one of the few good life service games to ever exist is a real shame. And to be realistic, the game isn't ruined, it's still great, and the new requirement is inconvenient but easy to do and ignore for most people (unless you are outside the psn network area) but you can't piss on your player base and tell them it's raining, that's a perfect way to burn all the good grace you've earned.

Well, sure. But if I lack a PlayStation, why would I have ever wanted to?

According to Sony, to play Helldivers.

Edit: To add to this, this isn't even anything new. If you want to play Sea of Thieves on PC or playstation, you need to make a microsoft account first. The major difference is no one wants to play Sea of Thieves.

It's the trade off to get their games on PC and enforce brand stickiness. It's dumb, and Poe is right on all accounts, it would be shitty for people to miss out on one of the most replayable, engaging and, apart from this, consumer-friendly always online game released this year because you need to make an account for it.
