Whine like a baby, now with 500% more drama!

I've been shaving with a safety razor for years. A while back, I got a Henson razor after watching a video of the founder talking about how he designed the handle. It's the best razor I've ever used.

The whine: I went out of town for a week, and I can really only go about 3 days without shaving before I start looking really scruffy. And I forgot to pack my razor in my toiletries bag. So, I go to Walgreens and grab a Dollar Shave Club handle and a couple cartridges.

OMG, I forgot how much disposable razors suck. Sure, it shaved my face. But I could feel the blades dulling before I was even half-way through. The first few strokes were smooth as butter, and I was all "This is actually nice". By the time I got to the end, it was tugging the hairs painfully before finally cutting. And this was just 3 days worth of stubble. I can usually get 3-4 shaves out of my safety razor before it gets to that point.

I won't forget next time

I've use disposable razors pretty much my whole life, but I'm looking into this Henson razor and it looks amazing. Bit concerned about switching blades for safety reasons. But do you think it would work good for head shaving?

I don't see why not, especially if you're already using disposables on your head. The blades aren't sharp on the sides, so I just take good care switching them out, and I have a blade container for disposal that I've had for years that still doesn't show signs of needing to be replaced. I haven't cut myself yet

The video that cinched it for me was the one explaining 'chatter' and showing a closeup of a regular razor chattering across a playing card digging gouges, while a Henson razor shaved a smooth, non-chattered bit. Unfortunately, the video was on facebook ads and is not on Youtube, so I can never show it to anyone when I talk about it.

Biked into work this morning. Kinda blinding snow, but the roads were clear (for now). Had my studded tires and I was careful.

Get to work, park and lock my bike. Walk towards my office building...and wipe out on a big patch of ice.

It's okay, guys! My back broke my fall!

Ow.

I'm honestly okay. But it's funny that I take all these precautions on my bike only to wipe out on my feet.

Ouch! Let's hope this isn't the start of another trifecta. Took me days to stop hobbling around last time.

I am so excited that the puppies we are fostering (and the mom) will be leaving this weekend through next week - it's great and all to see the cuteness overload, but the wake up at 4 AM due to them all howling, then again at 7 AM. We've had them just a month, but when all 7 get started, they're really loud (waking you up from deep sleep loud, even with my hearing issues). Mom is a German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix and dad is unknown.

We have six of them going this weekend to their forever homes (three on Saturday, three on Sunday), mom is going on either Monday or Tuesday. That leaves one that we had a home for, but the person has backed out, so we're having to find another home for. **edit - has a home now**

I've attached a picture of mom and six of the puppies.

OMG, and this dollar shave club razor doesn't even give a close shave. At home, I shave every 3 days or so.
Here I am, 24 hours later, and my face feels all stubbly and like I need to shave already again. :(

Your whining is convincing me that I should give safety razors a try.
best decision I ever made for shaving. Disposables also make my neck break out, and safety razors never have.
Plus, once you have the razor itself, the blades are hella cheap. I think when i bought my razor, I got like $20 or $30 worth of blades, years and years ago, and I still haven't run out.

I already have a bunch of blades left over from the old-style safety razor I used to use...20 years ago? Maybe 30? It's not like the blades expire, and they still come in handy for other things.

Youtube keeps switching from the dark theme to the light theme and it's driving me nuts. Fuck off with your eye blinding white. JUST STAY DARK. FUCK.

Tough night at the hotel. It's always these nights when I'm here on my own while we look for a new auditor.
Lots of check-ins and guest requests that are preventing me from getting my overnight tasks done on time.
One lady checked in and did nothing but argue with me about her room, while several people were waiting behind her to register.
"Can I get a quiet room?"
"I have you in 455. That is away from the highway and will be very quiet."
"I was in Eldorado tower last time. Can I have that one?"
"I currently don't have any rooms on the quiet side of Eldorado But I do have you in a quiet side of Portola tower."
"Ill take any room there so just I can have the quiet side of Eldorado."
"I apologize. I don't have any rooms on that side."
"I'll take a two-bed on that side."
"I'm again very sorry. But that side does not have any rooms available at all. The side you want is all King size, and I have 0 Kings tonight in the entire hotel."
"I'll take a King there then."
*Silent scream to the heavens*

She must be one of those people that believes hotels keep entire floors unbooked so that they can be used in an "emergency." Like the hotel would turn down money from one person on the slim chance of getting slightly more money from someone else.

What has two thumbs and two frozen legs because they ran out of clean longjohns?

Th-th-th-this guh-guh-guh-guy!

Did you know that biking in -15 (Celsius) weather is really stonking cold?
I'd extrapolated from walking in such weather, but I confess to limited biking experience, especially in winter.

You're a braver man than I, Mr. Piers.

Me: Starting to bike back from the grocery store on a wet, rainy day.

Bike chain: Welp, I think I'll just snap off here.

Well, fuck. That made for an unenjoyable walk home.

EDIT: All the salt on the roads probably didn't do my chain much good. I tried diligently cleaning and lubing it after work every night. Or at least every second night. But I guess there's only so much I can do about it.

I know the feeling. I had an old bike where the chain kept slipping off and I had to keep stopping to re-engage it frequently. (Hey, I was a teenager.) It happened that once it occurred in the rain. In DePere, Wisconsin. In August.

OMG, I'm 3 days into the new job and doing more training today, and this site detects when it's not the top window and stops the videos. I have to have it up front and can't listen in the background while I do other things. This is all stuff I know already. I'd rather just get other work done, barely listen to the video, and ace the test afterwards. sigh

I had to do LASER training for my current project. Like, I had to go through videos explaining what the acronym stands for, how monochromatic coherent light is different from standard light, how it is generated, why you shouldn't look directly into the beam, etc. And I'm all like, "I learned about LASERs in elementary school, man! Let's get to the good stuff already!"

This one is like a 35 minute 'drama' made like a TV show. But it's badly written and badly acted because it's not a TV show. It's a security video that's supposed to be engaging so that I can learn about Spear Phishing, Man in the Middle, etc. so dull.

I realize that there are a lot of people worse off, and this is really is just a whine and all, but still.

My father turned 70 two years ago. Due to declining health, we assumed it would be his last major chance to go on a holiday, so he was getting an all-expenses-paid cruise around the Canary Islands; my brother and SIL and their daughter would go along, we would stay behind for dogs and stuff. because of Covid, the cruise never went through (it was actually cancelled for a sand storm the first time and only later on postponed indefinitely for Covid, but whatever).
Two weeks ago we finally got around to doing the alternative: by now my dad's 72, and he doesn't want to go on a cruise anymore because of his health. So, it became an all-expenses-paid full-family week together in the Ardennes (forests and rock and breweries and castles pretty much). So far, so good. Well, not for my dad, maybe, but you know, not my whine.

So this is a week-long getaway in a fancy vacation house with a sauna and Jacuzzi with the 7+1 of us (father, mother, brother, sister in law, niece, wife, me and my brother's dog). First day there, my brother takes us all out to a Michelin star restaurant with him paying. A few days later, we take everybody out to a fancy Chinese. Both are nice, but obviously there's a difference in price class. No worries, my brother's the CEO of an international company and I'm just an IT support guy; my SIL is a retired millionaire and my wife works in healthcare. He likes to show off his wealth to feel successful, I certainly don't mind accepting a bit. Other expenses (excursions, general shopping, other dinners,...) were either paid by my mother or by my brother. We were asked to make "a fair contribution" for the week - "give what you feel comfortable giving".
We made some back-of-the-napkin calculations and came to about €700-€800 for the both of us - we'd be paying about 1/3 of the house, and all our tickets/entries/whatever. My brother had suggested we pay just 1/4 of the house since we're only 2 out of 8 occupants (he counts his kid and the dog as full people, but w/e).

I've now been nagging my brother for two weeks trying to get an account to deposit our contribution on, and finally he's now responded with "oh, don't bother, forget about it, happy whatever day".

Which...I'm willing to believe from my SIL that it's just good heartedness - heavens know she absolutely doesn't need it and literally doesn't know how much she has, even rounded down to the nearest 50K - and wanting to help family, but from my brother comes off as rubbing my nose in his being the "more successful" son. My brother isn't a bad person, but he kind of has this superiority complex thing going on (he's married to a rich, pretty, blonde, foreign woman, has multiple houses in multiple countries, a daughter, and he's a CEO travelling the country. By many metrics he's waaay more successful than I am....And yet I wouldn't want to trade with him for the world).

Anyway, whether it's well-intended or not, this...was supposed to be a common gift for my father, not just theirs. We still owe them several thousand dollars for a personal loan for our wedding - I'd be perfectly happy to have them wave off €500 or something from that and let us pay our fair share! And I know it's practically the same, but it feels different. It feels like we don't contribute to my dad's big present. But there's no gracious way to keep insisting "no, no, I really want to pay" after being told no.

So now I'm contemplating just giving €500 or so in my father's name to the Ukraine Red Cross, but I dunno. Still not the same.
