[Movies] Talk about the last movie you saw 2: Electric Threadaloo

And if you do get together with Mackenzie Davis, could you post about it extensively here so we can live vicariously through you?

My wife wants to watch Doctor Sleep, and it turned out neither of us have ever seen The Shining from beginning to end, so last night we sat down to give it a watch.

To be honest, I think I may have left it too late to watch it. I didn't find it all that interesting, surprising, or scary. In fact, most of my brain's clock cycles were devoted to spotting references from the Simpsons's The Shinning segment. Still, the cast do quite well (I think Jack Torrance was a role Jack Nicholson was born to play), there were some visually interesting shots, and it's nice to finally be able to get all the references.

Also, the woman in the bathtub was hot.

EDIT: Did anyone else find Shelley Duvall's running in this movie to be comical?

...at first.

Funny story about that. My father got that movie on VHS, and found it in the VCR one day. He was sure he hadn't left it in there and blamed my two stepbrothers. He told my stepmother, "Three guesses where it's wound to," before hitting play.

Sure enough...

Kung Fu Yoga

The worst Jackie Chan movie I have ever watched. And yes that includes Spy Daddy, The Tuxedo, The Medallion and any of the other Hollywood movies. Lots and lots of bad CGI, giant plot holes in a story that doesn't make any sense, characters I didn't care for and worst of all uninteresting fight scenes. All in all a bloody mess off a movie.

War For The Planet Of The Apes
Man this whole trilogy does not get talked about enough.

I still think Dawn is the best of the trilogy, but War is great too. Just doesn't do as good a job building sympathy for both sides, which was my favourite part of Dawn. And it's got a comparatively high degree of cheese, but I'll forgive the cheese because it's a fucking planet of the apes movie, you need to accept cheese, and it's honestly surprising these movies aren't a thousand times more campy. If you told me back in 2010 I'd be emotionally invested in a mocap chimpanzee I'd call you a liar.

I love this trilogy so much. These movies turned out a hundred times better than they had any right to be.

Doctor Sleep

Pretty danged good, and a worthy sequel to The Shining. Ewan is solid in the lead role, while the girl who played Abra got a few good chances to show her chops. The standout for me, though, was Rebecca Ferguson's antagonist. Overall I didn't find the movie very scary. There are a few places that are more tense than anything, but on the whole I'd say it's more of a sci-fi thriller than a horror movie. Though I'm a bit iffy about the third act, which is basically a long series of references to The Shining. The movie was doing fine on its own, going its own way and creating its own story, I'm not sure it was necessary to bring everything back to the Overlook Hotel.

Also it appears the director may be a RWBY fan, because I spotted several pieces of RWBY merch in the movie.

Finally, Rebecca Ferguson is so danged hot.

One day we will get a @bhamv3 movie review that does not end with "{actress} is so hot".

And on that day a wacky band of forumites will come together to sally forth on a quest to rescue him from the imposter who has taken over his account as part of some no doubt nefarious plot!

We are already through the looking glass...

Serenity (2019 movie starring Matthew McConaughey)

This movie is shit in every way it is possible for a movie to be shit. That is all.

Well...shit. Okay people, I need some volunteers for a rescue mission. You want wacky adventures don't you? This is how you get them.

Or if we're all feeling lazy (it is the weekend after all), we can just give it up as a lost cause & hope that @bhamv4 turns out to be a pretty chill guy.

Pick It Up! Ska in the 90s
I kickstarted this and so I've got my digital copy already.satbdown and watched it the other night while working on some coupon graphic design. It was enjoyable and I can't wait to watch it again and again and again. BUT, even so, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed at how superficially it scratches the surface of third wave ska. It's a good little crash course for anyone not super familiar with the scene, and it's a fun collection of all your favourite people if you are familiar with it, but if you're looking for some meaty details you won't find them here.

Also really disappointed at the lack of the Planet Smashers, but that's a whole thing and I know the filmmakers tried to get them (I'm like 99% certain I'm the only reason they reached out to them), so I can't fault the filmmakers. I'm crossing my fingers that Matt Collyer at least got his interview done in time to be in the special feature when the BluRay comes out.

Anyway, yeah, it's fun. I liked it you probably won't be surprised by that.

Klaus (Netflix)

Go watch this ASAP. This movie is amazing. The animation is among the best of the year, and some of the best hand draw animation in decades. The characters are great, the story is charming, there's very little to criticize about this (I thought the modern pop music didn't quite fit. It wasn't bad, but it could have been better. Original songs would have been more of a gamble, though.) Overall, I was blown away by how good this was.

Why are you still reading this? Go! Experience it for yourself.

The trailer for Klaus has a number of plot points in it that remind me of Santa Claus is Coming to Town, although now the postman has an expanded role besides narrating.

That's not a bad comparison, only the postman is Kuzco from the Emperor's New Groove, there are no elves, Klaus has no love interest, and the town is full of feuding clans that aren't quite Hatfield-McCoy but only have hints of Montague-Capulet.

Klaus

just finished it. Like literally JUST finished it. Credits are still playing.

First of all, absolutely beautiful animation and design.

But also, it's just really, very good. I can see the comparison to "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", but only because it has a few of the same elements (and I mean, it's a Christmas movie about Santa Claus. Most of those elements are unavoidable). It's a completely different, and MUCH better movie.

Caught up on two MCU movies I didn't watch the first time around.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Liked it quite a lot, tonally it felt a lot like the first movie, but expanded in a way that befits a sequel. The shrinking and growing tech was used marvelously and imaginatively for the action scenes, and Ghost made for an interesting and sympathetic villain. The humor was also great, with Luis's truth serum scene being the highlight for me. Scott's entanglement scene with Janet is probably in second place. And, naturally, both Wasps and Ghost are all hot. Scott's ex-wife is also hot.

Spider-Man: Far From Home: This movie felt like it was all over the place, but not necessarily in a bad way. I already knew about the Skrulls twist, and that Mysterio uses illusions, but there were still a bunch of things that surprised me. It was also nice to see Peter gradually growing and developing as a superhero, both in terms of his powers (he's learning how to use his Peter-Tingle) and his head. The humor once again landed with me, and all the action scenes were good. I do wish they'd made Mysterio more sympathetic, because I think they could've made him have a genuine grievance against Stark, but instead he became a typical maniacal pseudo-abusive-boyfriend bad guy. Anyway, on the whole I liked it well enough, maybe not as much as Ant-Man and the Wasp, but it's still good. Oh, and MJ is hot, Aunt May is hot, Maria Hill is hot, and even Betty Brant is hot. Wait, am I allowed to say that? How old was she during filming? Lemme just look this up... uh ok ignore that last one.

Frozen II

I snuck out to see this while all the kids are at school, and I'll probably have to see it again with the Z Family later this week. Overall, it was extremely enjoyable and I'm so glad they gave Anna and Elsa a quest instead of trying to find romance. Frozen going the opposite direction with fairytale tropes is it's strength. The animation is beautiful in so many scenes.

And a few minor spoiler-quibbles:

I feel like Anna's characterization got a little lost at times. Yes, I know she's trying to keep what's left of her family together after being alone for so long, but it feels like she didn't get any strong development until the last 1/3 of the movie.

There is no "Let It Go"-level songs, but that's a once-in-a-lifetime track. Kristoff's power ballad was visually hilarious and Jonathan Groff has the pipes, but I wish there had been a place to include it where it didn't feel like it was slowing down the plot.

I wish we had learned a little more about the Northern Tribe. Or give the grandfather's actions a little more explanation. Did he want the land? Did he want them to become dependant on Arendelle? Were they an equally powerful nation? "Because I can" just felt a little weaksauce.

Just got back from seeing Knives Out.

Definitely one to check out, folks. It's a murder mystery that somehow has every trope possible, but also subverts most of them at the same time.

Frozen 2

Overall I liked it very much, though perhaps not quite as much as the first one. The animation's stunning, the story's interesting, and the humor's great. However, the songs weren't as catchy as the first one, there were some pacing issues (Kristoff's song brought the movie to a screeching halt), and I was actually a bit confused at Elsa's climactic song. Still though, this is a worthy sequel to Frozen, and I actually do hope there's more to come.

Also, Elsa's hot. And Anna's hot. And everyone else is hot. Except Olaf, he's cool.

Sitting in the theater waiting for Knives Out. Sold out. Very uncomfortable seating. Sure hope the movie is worth it.

Okay the movie was good. But it could have been great.

Remember when I said it was uncomfortable? Yeah, it was nearly sold out so my son & I got seats E8 & E10. Sitting in E9 was a HUGE handicapped lady already reclined & using all of her seat and the adjoining armrests, not to mention bleeding out into seats E8 & E10. And she was asleep. And snoring.

The crowd was very dead, probably because it was 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon. The jokes never landed, there was no energy in the place. The movie rose above a lot of that, but I have to see it again in a better atmosphere.

I love going to movies, but it was just a bad movie-going experience.

I stopped going to movies after trying to see Guardians of the Galaxy on the Sunday morning the week after release. There were literally three people in the auditorium including myself. Haven't been to any since. I can just stay home if I want to watch a movie by myself. Cheaper and better food, too.

Well, there's something to be said for seeing it on a giant screen... but now I have a VR headset for that :D
