[TV] Talk about the last TV you watched, the catchall thread

Oh, about that whole Q civil war. Why did the Voyager writers make such a big deal about Q procreating?

There's literally an episode of Next Generation about that very thing, True Q.

Holodecks man.

Is it weird that it always bothered me that they never went into the logistics of scheduling that thing? I always wanted some offhand remarks from crew complaining about the wait times to use them. It bugged the shit out of me when someone could just saunter into it whenever they wanted, as though there wouldn't be massive, massive issues with availability, on Voyager, sure, but especially on Next Gen. The D has a crew of 1014 and apparently 16 holodecks (holy shit, I didn't know the number was that high when I began writing this paragraph, had to google it to find out).

Ahh fuck, the episode with the Voth just started.....God damn Voth are the drizzling shits.

Combined crew and passenger load of 1012 scattered over 3 shifts, according to Memory Alpha... but that could balloon to as much as 6000 for some missions and you could cram as many as 15,000 into it if you HAD to. If EVERYONE wanted one for an hour each month, you'd still have 286 people who don't get a chance every month at 1012 count. And it's likely the Captain can go in whenever the hell he wants, with senior staff having extra time/privileges. It really makes you wonder how Barclay got enough time in the damn thing to develop an holodeck problem.

My best guess is that passengers don't get time in them unless they are VIPS and that a lot of people are sharing time with each other; I could see a group of 6 or more crewmen going in to reenact a pen and paper style adventure and pooling their time. I'd also wager people are spending a lot of time in other pursuits, such as at the gym or Ten Forward. If your primary interest is sporty, there's a likelyhood you rarely use the holodeck because you can have your fun at the gym. If you like movies, you can go to movie night or watch in your quarters. Basically, the holodecks are able to work like they do because you can do a lot of other shit on a star ship the size of a small town.

24*30*16 = 11,520 holodeck hours available each month
Yeah, I read someone do some estimations that, with some leeway for extenuating circumstances and possible maintenance time, a person would be able to squeeze 8 hours of holodeck time a month, if it were evenly distributed.

No one told that to Barclay, who could apparently use them at will.

That, and there were probably some people who looked at holodeck use the way some people still look at video games today. "Eh, it's not real, I don't see the point, kinda immature" etc.

"Back in my day we only had virtual reality! You kids don't know how good you have it!"

"When I was a boy we had only partial - not complete - sensory and tactile holodecks! We had to use our imaginations about what that alien girl felt like!"

There would’ve been a separate branch of Starfleet dedicated to teaching the holodeck performers. More than just simple puppeteers, these junior-grade officer performers (nicknamed “Hensons”) would frequently have some of THE most interesting stories to tell at parties.

I remember disliking the Khazon Seska stuff, but now, watching it in chronological order I see that there's so many fewer of these episodes than I thought there were. Seska is a friggin' delight. She's so delightfully treacherous. You could tell that the writers liked her too. It was a bummer that she died off so early. The later holodeck episode was fun as hell. I'm gonna miss her.

Jesus Christ Janeway. Your big idea is help the Borg? Sorry, your 150 fellows on a trip home is not worth the possible untold trillions you're going to doom. God damn. I forgot what a wretched plan this was.

Is that the other dimension aliens episode? I forget if there was any indication that they were major threat to anyone other than the Borg.

There was, but they didn't know that before Janeway decided to help the Borg. Before they knew 8472 planned to extinguish all life in the galaxy, they'd already decided to make the deal.

Seven of Nine's outfit is fucking ridiculous. Like....really ridiculous. It's embarrassing.
Lady-in-a-skin-tight-jumpsuit was an important role that needed to be filled. Also another person-trying-to-learn-to-be-human because I guess the docotor wasn't enough.

Hers sticks out more than any other throughout Star Trek, though T'Pol's gets close.

Also deadly. Her first dress was so tight cut including the neck part that Jeri Ryan passed out twice.
That's just it, Troy's and T'Pol's at least had the appearance of being comfortable. Seven's, with the ribbing and such looks like it took help to put on.

Did DS9 have a skin-tight body suited main character? I guess Kira's costume got slinkier from the normal ridiculously bulky (second only to the puffy Romulan uniform) Bajoran outfit.

That's not ribbing; Jeri Ryan had to wear a corset under the suit. It's why she HATED wearing the costume; the costume itself was perfectly comfortable even with the shoes but the corset was painful.

DS9 had a string of Dabo girls, most notably Lita who was actually a full fledged character in her own right.

I remember a (possibly apocryphal) interview with Robert Picardo (or with someone else recounting what Robert said) that went something like: “The set was particularly cold/breezy that day, and [Robert] remarked to Jeri, ‘Your uniform is particularly ... loquacious today.’”

Leeta's and the rest's outfits made sense though. They were basically Quark's Hooters girls.

Couldn't she have just said, "Hey guys, can I not wear a corset? Corsets are awful and I hate them." Holy moly.

So I guess season 4 is when they stop pretending there's any kind of scarcity.

Watching Tom Paris replicate some flowers and then use a completely superfluous site to site transport when they still talk about replicator rations is a little nuts.

Speaking of which, wouldn't the transporters be just as power intensive as replicators? I mean, they do have to breakdown a body, store it and then, basically, replicate it.

While the technology is related, replicators and transporters do work differently. Replicators pull elements from storage and arrange them in the current form and heat so they can be consumed safely... this is why replicator food is kind of "off" when some people eat it; it's always assembled perfectly so there's none of the variation found in normal food. Transporters use the same process (convert matter into energy for transport and rearrangement) but it has to do it at a MUCH more complicated level AND with all the original matter; it's the difference between creating a person from elements and moving a person.

The reason the transporter works this way is to avoid a very simple logical critique of the technology; the transporter effectively kills you when you are moved, so the person who wakes up on the other side isn't really the same person that left, even if ALL their matter and bio-electrical energy is in the same position and made of the exact same atoms. Star Trek writers claim this is the case, I call it bullshit and I'm with McCoy; I'll be taking the shuttles, thank you.

Yeah, I know they're different, I just meant power consumption wise. They're always worried about power consumption, but never worry about the holodecks (and I'm aware of the FLLLIIIIMMMSSSSYY excuse given early on in the series), transporters, the shuttle craft replicator they have onboard somewhere, etc. Just regular food replicators.
