Video Game News and Miscellany

Last time I tried N64 emulating, there was a lot of delay. And for PS1, weird glitching and display errors.
PS1 emulation has sort of hit a brick wall; there are just some things you can't replicate without the actual hardware. An infamous one is one of the attacks of the last boss in Xenogears; if he does it, it will crash your game on PS2, PS3, or in emulation because they did some weird code. The current version on the PSN simply prevents the boss from using the attack to prevent the crashes.

I've been emulating ps2 lately without trouble, though I know I tried Spider-man 2 before and it was a nightmare.

Destiny 2 is apparently free for anyone with a Battle.net account until the middle of November as long as you claim it by then.

Hey, a Blizzard product I'm interested in. It's been...so long.

It would be super cool if they did the same treatment for Warcraft and Warcraft 2. How rad would that be?

I was kind of hoping they'd remaster all three, but no.

You know, I might actually consider buying it, if they unlock the maximum zoom distance so I could zoom out so far as to see the entire battlefield if I so desired, like Supreme Commander.

Watching Caleb play Battletech on Twitch makes me really glad I backed the kickstarter, but really pisses me off that I have a goddamn potato that cant run it

Yeah, I can't get it to work ether. I constantly have the camera lock up or something. Maybe later.

I'm literally on my 3rd play through. Great game, only gonna get better. Can't wait for the expansion packs.

And I don't need my cell phone to play it!

Has it improved since launch? The mission triggers not flagging properly was a constant thing.

I was also pretty mad that I didn't get any of the real cool assault mechs until after I finished the main game.

From what I saw, Caleb gained quite a few light and medium mechs via salvage and in one mission, two heavies - a gunslinger and a crusader. The gunslinger was salvage, the crusader was an award for completing the story mission.

And honestly, to me, that was a super-cool game mechanic. It fits the lore, where mechs are frequently rebuilt from salvage because new technology is limited.

The easiest way to get mechs is to simply barrage enemy mechs with lots of stability damage: if you can kill the pilot through injuries without blowing up the mech, you can get the mech intact. Destroying the cockpit does this as well.

Alternatively, sweep the legs. You get two salvage from legged mechs and you'll have an easier time of getting weapons and systems from the mech.

My problem wasn't cockpitting (which is still very difficult to pull off with regularity) or legging, it was the lack of seeing most of them more than once.

Gamers don't choose for stock to go down.
Gamers are mad because the company isn't making the game they wanted for them. They go online in droves to complain. The complaints make news. The stocks go down, which is great, because the company gets jittery and starts pulling resources from projects like Diablo 4.

I'm a gamer myself. I just don't play games I'm not interested in. I don't throw a goddamned tantrum because a company makes something for someone who isn't me.

That's not why people are mad. No one is upset that there's a mobile game with the diablo license. People are mad that a mobile game with the diablo license was the huge hyped up announcement that blizzard unveiled at their convention made for the hardest of hardcore blizzard fans, most of which are pc gamers. So while Activision/Blizzard shouldn't be faulted for wanting to make a mobile game (which I'm sure will be monetized out the wazoo and make them tons of money) they can legitimately be criticized for the way they presented it, to a room full of people who are not the audience for it.

And now for something different and yet somehow the same, here is a crowd throwing rocks and cans at Nickleback until they leave, because for some reason the concert promoter thought it was a good idea for them to open for Slipknot

Yeah, imagine if a burger chain hyped up by saying "hey burger fans, if you like burgers, maybe you should come see our big mysterious announcement at BurgerCon2018, we think you'll be pleasantly surprised, WINK WINK NUDGE NUDGE" and then unveiled a soup and salad deal.

Somebody would like it, sure, and it might even be a good business move... but that room full of people you coaxed into showing up came looking for meat and cheese, and now feels like they've been snookered.

Especially when they figure out that it's taking the place of any new burgers they'd expected to eat for the next few years.

I think that is a huge part of it. If it had been a sort of side announcement, then I think most players would be like, "Oh. Not for me, but okay." But making it their huge tentpole announcement and centerpiece of a show that's geared to a different audience, well, it's pretty clearly been a mistake.

Yeah... a lot of people are comparing it to the Fallout 4 / Fallout Shelter announcements. "Hey, we got this awesome game in the works and here's something from it, but it's going to be awhile. In the meantime... we got this mobile title. Maybe you'll like it?"

If that had been the case, people would be slathering over Diablo Immortal.

Riot recently had their finals for League, the last best of 5 was terribly one sided and not at all enjoyable to watch.

But!

They also debut a Kpop group called K/DA made of 4 of their Champions and released a music video for it.

The music isn't typically my cup of tea but the song has been growing on me. And if nothing else the animation is great.

They also did this weird AR thing at opening cermonies.

Yeah, because it's not like a gaming company has ever taken all it's beloved licenses and just switched over to making pachinko machines and mobile games, leaving fans wondering if they'll ever get another entry in their favorite series....
