[PC Game] Halforums House: Rimworld - the story thread

Is it the original code or a mod that is throwing so many relatives at us? Because it's getting a bit off-putting and taking me out of the story. I know, "real world logic" and all that. But it's starting to show why this is still in alpha after all this time.
It's vanilla, and rather exacerbated by the fact that we started with 50-someodd colonists instead of 3 or 5.

But basically, you can just assume everybody had their whole family on the ship, and a decent number of them made it to the surface.

HALFORUMS HOUSE:RIMWORLD - Year 5503, part 4 - Winter

Decembruary 2, 5503 - GasBandit is nuzzled by a muffalo while working around the ship and names him Aussie, which strikes me as humorous. Now Wasabi can tell her husband he's in the game, too. Dodge and Cog get into a fight in the workshop. It isn't long or brutal, but Cog is clearly worse for wear. That night, a bug infestation suddenly pops up around the steel mine. BErt is in the mine when it happens, and is downed with life-threatening injuries. Putt-Putt loses an ear. Thankfully, the militia is able to kill the bugs and get to BErt in time to save him. However, the mining equipment is damaged and the two masterpiece sculptures there to keep the miners happy are destroyed.

Pictured: I dub thee Aussie.

Pictured: Dodge v Cog

Pictured: The infestation begins

Pictured: Take that, bug scum!

Dec 3 - Cargo pods full of wort (unfermented beer) fall in the middle of the crops. Wut. Who..

Pictured: WHO SHIPS UNFERMENTED BEER INTERPLANETARY? WHY?

Dec 4 - Cog throws a party in the dining hall at 4 in the morning. Attendance is understandably low, but even BErt manages to limp his way out of the hospital to be there.

Pictured: Morphine. It's the only way to paaarty

Dec 5 - Score! Cargo pods full of 79 uranium land just outside the north wall. Nice. Maybe it's time to make Moffa's brain chip.

Pictured: Manna from heaven. Really heavy, ugly, radioactive manna.

Dec 7 - It's taken a couple days to manufacture the chip, but Moffa is finally taken out of Cryptosleep and implanted with an AI chip by Jun. When he comes around from the anesthetic, he's good as new! Well, except for the hearing loss in his ears, but that's another matter.

Pictured: Brain Surgery, now with helmets

Dec 8 - One of the other faction leaders sells us a tip on an item cache that has 211 uranium in it. Unfortunately, it is guarded by a pirate outpost. The usual gang of balla-shotcallas are loaded into transport pods and sent to wreck shit. Turns out Mikerc's dad, GasBandit's mom and Denbrott's mom were among the pirates. I didn't even realize it until the fight was over. Thynne killed Mr. Someguy, SpecialKO killed Mrs. Pomona while she was fleeing, and Mrs. Spaniard escapes with some wounds. Thynne was caught in a grenade blast and took a lot of damage, but nothing too serious. GasBandit loses a finger, Terrik loses a toe. But the day is one and the payday is made. If you want to watch the actual combat, here's a highlight, but I recommend cranking it to 1.25x speed, maybe even 1.50.

Pictured: The tip

Pictured: The payoff

Dec 10 - The last of the raiding party returns from the item cache.

Dec 12 - A herd of deer goes mad and Gruebeard is surrounded. He gets stomped bad, but rescuers are soon on the scene and he is carried to the hospital by Squidley.

Pictured: Oh deer, Gruebeard

Dec 14 - Apparently it's Frank's turn to throw a 4am party. All these parties are actually kinda doing us a favor, it's been a very mild winter, and the foodstores are bursting at the seams. As people wake up, they wander into the festivities for breakfast. 11 Man-eating grizzlies enter the area. The Militia meets them in the killbox. Although Dirona gets clawed up a bit, there is a delightfully surprising lack of friendly-fire given how these things usually go.

Pictured: 6 am and the joint is jumpin'

Pictured: We sustain bear-ly any injuries

Dec 15 - I just had to say something about how mild the winter has been. A cold snap slams into the area, causing a late hard freeze. Not that supplies are particularly threatened. At the end of the year, the ship has 45 Cryptosleep pods. Making good progress. I worry about the rising wealth levels of the colony, however, and what that means for the challenges ahead.

Pictured: the wealth graph of the colony

Trying something different for the social standings, as they're getting difficult to get useful data out of -

Here they are only reflecting "likes" of 40 or stronger

Here are the "hates" of 40 or stronger

Here is the combined graphic

Wow. My pawn has really improved in the social standings since getting a bionic eye.

I imagine that helping to feed a ton of people helps.

I just wonder if there's only a penalty for killing someone ELSE'S relative, and if so, does that mean you're supposed to micromanage it so pawns only kill their own relatives?

My character seems rather insubstantial to the colony, lol
The nature of the reports is if it bleeds, it leads - if you don't do something egregiously stupid, or mean, or get sliced up like a christmas turkey... then I don't mention you a lot :p But you're there, you're doin stuff :p

HALFORUMS HOUSE:RIMWORLD - Year 5504, part 1 - Spring

Brace yourselves. ☠

Aprimay 1, 5504 - As presaged by the cold snap that rolled in the previous day, it starts snowing.

Apr 2 - DarkAudit and Frank slug it out in the dining hall. DA finds catharsis, Frank is even more pissed.

Pictured: DA v. Frank

Apr 3 - It struggled valiantly, but the cold snap fails to kill off the crops and dies with a whimper.Temperatures start climbing again, and the crops continue growing.

Apr 4 - Charon hunts muffalo, and angers the herd, and they stomp him flat. Ravenpoe tries to come to the assist, but also gets trampled.

Pictured: Mooooooaahhh shit

Pictured: Poe down

Apr 5 - Wasabi hunts a cougar, and finds herself becoming the hunted. Her hunting dog is strangely absent, and the cougar shreds off her ear, crushes her jaw, and knocks her out. However, a muffalo she has been training comes to her rescue and stomps the cougar. Sissy, her dog, shows up late, and nuzzles the unconscious Wasabi until help arrives to retrieve her.

Pictured: Sissy nudges her motionless master's bleeding body

Apr 6 - Jun installs a bionic ear and jaw in Wasabi. Look out, she's a biter.

Apr 7 - as the weather warms up, the colony trades out their heavy winter gear for dusters and cowboy hats again. Seventeen colonists -including Jun- suddenly come down with the flu. The infirmary is far too small for them all, so most have to stay in their regular bed.

Pictured: The sick roster of the great influenza epidemic of 5504 (red dots)

Apr 8 - A heat wave grips the area. Evaporative coolers are installed in the bedrooms, infirmary, and major work areas. But before that can be completed, a Psychic mechanoid ship crashes in the north rice field.

Pictured: This doth not bode well

Apr 9 - Mikerc throws a 4-am party! What is with these people and their 4 am parties? Especially when we've got a mechanoid ship to deal with! Defenses are constructed and the shooting starts. Huge amounts of mechanoids pour out of the ship part. Since the sick colonists were in bed, we have about half the militia missing. Injuries are plentiful and horrific. Squidley is shot to death. Zero dies to friendly fire, and his rat goes berserk and attacks a muffalo - which stomps it flat. Seeing SpecialKO go down, DarkAudit whips out his knife and personally tanks three scythers before going down, losing his nose. Klew has lost a leg. Ravenpoe is dragged to safety, but bleeds out before he can be bandaged. GasBandit's, Wasabi's, and Gruebeard's wounds become badly infected and require intensive care. I neglect to take screenshot of much of it because I'm just desperately trying to staunch the gushing wounds of half the colony, while making sure the other half don't die of the flu.

Pictured: But at least I remembered to screenshot the 4 am party

Pictured: the half-strength militia, about to do and die for the colony

Apr 10 - The colony is a chaotic swirl of bandages, blood and vomit. Tensions are high. Mikerc decides to smoke some weed despite his blood loss and ends up passing out in the game room. Klew follows suit in the south storage room. Thankfully, the heat wave ends, lending some small comfort to the miserable colony. That night, Dave goes hunting, and manages to find THREE wargs. I've never seen more than one warg at once. He takes down one before the other two get him, tearing off one of his feet and mangling an eye. Due to a clerical error, Aussie is butchered for meat while I am busy dealing with the various other crises >_< .

Pictured: Mikerc's folly

Pictured: Dave is warg fodder

Apr 11 - A huge raid of pirate sappers shows up in the middle of the night, with everyone still down and wounded. A desperate fight ensues, requiring even flu-sickened colonists to fight. Terrik loses a hand. Mikerc hobbles late to the fight on his stump leg and catches a grenade for his trouble. There are other moderate injuries to several people, but the pirates are thankfully driven back. Astonishingly, there were no family members among the raid, for once. If this isn't the last of it for a while, we're in serious trouble - almost no able bodied fighters are left in the colony. A warg gets into the colony, but Dirona takes it down.

Pictured: The walking wounded after the pirate raid.

Apr 12 - Jun installs a scyther blade in place of Terrik's missing left hand. I pity whoever gets in a fist fight with him, now. Klew gets a regular old bionic leg. Siska creates a large, glorious, golden statue depicting Celt Z creating a statue.

Apr 13 - For the first time ever, Jun fails an operation, botching the installation of a bionic foot on Dave. Gruebeard also fucks up doing the same for Mikerc.

Apr 14 - Jun puts a bionic eye in Dave, without fail this time.

Apr 15 - Things are finally starting to return to some semblance of order, when a psychic drone suddenly starts driving all the women of the colony out of their minds. They're all on edge for the next day or two. Despite that, Jun manages to correct her mistake and installs a bionic foot on Dave, and then another on Mikerc.

Over 130 medkits were used this month. Thank god I stocked up. Eriol just HAD to talk about how assured our victory seemed, didn't he? :p

Speaking of, despite the monumental setbacks of the month, there are now 54 pods on the ship. There are 16 bonded animals and 46 colonists. We're in spitting distance of getting off this rock... so long as NOTHING ELSE GOES WRONG... (ominous music)

Pictured: Two different views of the social standings

Just 8 more pods? Whoa. Edge of the seat time.

Also, interesting that my pawn's only strong emotional ties are to Jun and Dei.

Unfortunately, the social cloud is kind of fucked up because I have to set the threshold for lines to be drawn to be much higher than actual friendship (which starts at 20), due to the Keltsy factor. If I put the threshold below 41, it's just a great big green splat around her, and no userful information is conveyed.

So, take heart anyone without lines, it doesn't mean you are without friends... just really CLOSE friends.

I died without ever eating a single person? Man, why'd I even agree to this trip!
Welllllll you remember way back at the start, you butchered a raider, right?

And then the meat was turned into kibble, right?

Kibble making requires multiples of 20 meat.

There was 75 human meat.

So there was 15 left over.

It kinda... went missing?

Now, I can't say for sure whether you ate it, or one of the animals ate it... but somebody ate it.

I am kinda sad I didn't get to make you the humanskin leather outfit I wanted for you, though. Guess Terrik will have to wear it in your honor.

Pictured: WHO SHIPS UNFERMENTED BEER INTERPLANETARY? WHY?
Belgians, obviously. And, of course, why wouldn't you? It's the best way to get decent beer shipped, and finishing the fermenting locally creates a richer taste, where you can have the combination of Homeworld hops and Pioneer wild yeasts, which will make for a great brew. Really, why do you think people have suddenly started throwing parties at any old time of the day? The beer's gotten better, man.

Apr 12 - Jun installs a scyther blade in place of Terrik's missing left hand. I pity whoever gets in a fist fight with him, now.
Soo, everybody else jsut gets regular old "replacement" parts, but Terrik is the one Jun decides to..."upgrade"? I call nepotism!
