[TV] The What Anime Are You Watching Thread!

Sorry I'm only seeing this now. Since I don't watch much anime, I don't visit this thread often. But I've noticed that over the years, it seems people are less and less receptive to the idea of criticism. Or more to the point, there's less GREY area in criticism among the general internet populace. Something is either unbelievably awesome, like the second coming of Christ wearing power armour made of kittens or it's the absolute worst, piece of monkey doodie, worse than Hitler and 9/11 put together.

Just look when a game gets a good score, but not 10/10. Hardcore fans will rail against the reviewer for DARING to not give their precious game a perfect score.

I think it all stems from the growing petulant entitlement among western society.
I want to make a joke like one of those people, but im not 15 anymore and cant remember how to be that way. So uhhh....there is a shit ton of awesome anime coming out and I dont think I can buy it all.

Sort of anime related I guess.

Ah! My Goddess, after a 25-year serialization, has finally ended this month. It's weird, something I've been following on and off since I was in middle school is just done. Not as satisfying an ending as I was hoping, but at least it was a happy one.

So I watched Hare+Guu, uhhh yeah, so that was interesting. I don't even know how to quantify a surreal, slice of life, sketch comedy anime. It was cute, and fun, but it didn't really move me or anything. Last night I was bored and decided to bug my buddy Raidrinn, we watched half of Guilty Crown. very beautiful, well written, but a ton of stuff about 15 year olds I was lost on. They reach the mid-point, there is a big battle, and the main hero(15 year old kid) has a major PTSD freak out after all the killing he has been doing. The ADULTS tell him to stop being a child and pull his shit together. When he can't(surprise!) he is told to get out of their sight and never come back, when they lose the battle after telling him to get lost he is called and told it was because he was not there to save them. WHAT!? You don't get to drum someone out of your ranks and then complain that they were the key to your survival!?

Reading a manhua called Soul Cartel, the story is fine but the layout...
GAH! I think that pointless negative space almost blinded me!

I know, but I still can't help feeling it looks off-putting. At least put something in the negative space like some fireballs or something to distract me from the blank void that distracts me from the usually good art.

Yeah Guilty Crown got stupid pretty quick, I think I dropped it after like 5 episodes.
We sat down and knocked out the back half. The series starts to freefall and imo ends like "end of Eva". I was not happy with the bittersweet ending and massive plot holes everywhere!

Rewatching gits:sac with my buddy Matt. It still holds up, we are on ep 4 atm.

I highly doubt I'll watch it, but I'm slightly curious to see if they edit out the gay again in the american version this time, or if they think that we've matured enough to handle a male Zoisite.

It's funny because this has been announced/rumored for like two years, and finally there's a trailer for it. From what I gather the manga author had a lot of control over this, too, so I can't imagine there'll be much in the way of edited content.

Viz Media, the people who localized Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha, now own the american rights. They have already announced no cuts, no cousins, no bullshit. They have said they will take liberties with some of the more Japanese jokes when they dub. Think like the Crystal Pepsi joke from FLCL that was originally about Ramune.

That silly line was made from translation loss? Well hell I learned something today.

And I like the new Sailor Moon's style, feels a lot like the original manga. And fuck yes to none of that cousin bull shit.

You do have to keep in mind some jokes in Japanese just don't make sense if directly translated, especially puns. A lot of manga I've read have notes at the end explaining why the jokes were localized, and it's usually easy to see why.

Oh I know, like in One Piece when Franky turned into a centaur he said "HEN-TAI" meaning transform but sounds like pervert which is appropriate given his personality. They changed it to him saying "Mutate" in the Viz manga and while kinda funny it doesn't have the same punch. And then you have Mr. One's ENTIRE move set which all had the word "Supa" in their name akin to his Supa Supa no Mi fruit. That one was lost on the American public. And these are just two of many examples of the pun factory that is the One Piece franchise.

I found out Ranma 1/2 was on Hulu a few weeks ago. I lost my shit and began marathoning. <3 My cousin and I were super obsessed with Ranma when we were kids, and I've also been wanting to cosplay from it for a long while.
I actually gathered a few reference images from a certain episode for a future girl Ranma cosplay... Wheeee

Man. Ranma 1/2 and Tenchi Muyo! (OVA's) were my first subbed anime. Ranma was the first that I watched via download as opposed to buying, too, though I do have s3 and one of the movies.

I wander why no-one thought to bring Goldfish Warning over here. 52 episodes, silly cartoon plot, colorful characters, pretty much SCREAMS Saturday morning TV.

All this says to me is that you haven't watched Saturday Morning tv lately.
Nickelodeon somehow seems to think that 6+ hours of Spongebob is entertaining and has all of their new shows on after noon. Cartoon Network at least TRIED but it got hamstrung by it's own executives.

Meant like in the 80s or 90s closer to when it was made. Was 7 O clock time slot easily. All they'd have to change was one character saying "SON OF A BITCH!" and it would've been good. Had no relevance to the plot either, it was just a dumb English joke.

But yes, the Saturday morning line-up is just...AWFUL! Regardless of my opinions of Sanjay and Craig or Breadwinners(Like the first, hate the latter) ONLY TWO SHOWS?! Why the hell do people have to wait an extra day to watch Ninja Turtles? Just air it all on the same day and shove Sunday with reruns.

So as this season starts to draw to a close, I think No Game No Life and Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou are my favorites of the season. NGNL is hilarious and just plain fun, and Kawaisou is both funny and one of the better romance plots I've watched in a very long time.

Ahh same here! Sailor Moon was the first anime I watched in 5th or 6th grade. Then, a year or two later, I found a store with anime things and anime videos to rent. Thus began my discovery and love of Ranma and Tenchi. A couple years after that came anime movies on SciFi around midnight! <3

I remember watching Sailor Moon, though I can't remember what channel it was on. Blockbuster and later Hollywood Video had VHS tapes of random shows and movies that I'd try to rent. I remember them having one or two Evangelion tapes, one Tenchi OVA tape, and all sorts of other things. Most shows I ended up having to torrent years and years later because it was so hard to find them here without going all the way to San Diego and/or paying like 80+ bucks for a DVD set.

so guys...I found Yu-Gi-Oh! boxsets at my local HPB after my buddy Raid asked the lady if they had anymore anime behind the counter and she pulled out a giant stack of stuff. It is the english version, but I dont care, its horrible and dumb, and we were making snarky jokes all night!
