WTF, Texas? Two HS players blindside official.

Via Deadspin. John Jay HS out of San Antonio.

Short run on the left side of the line. Official is nowhere near the play. First kid hits him from behind, then the second spears him.

They should be arrested.

Deadspin comments lean towards orders from the sideline.

Then the coach and players should be arrested.

I believe it was their own stupid idea. The resulting penalty gave the opposing team a first down and allowed them to score the winning touchdown.

Now I hope the UIL will ban the kids for life, and the Athletic Director fires at least the head coach.

The fact that it's 2 players shows some sort of conspiracy. Now the task is finding out who knew what when.

Then it becomes a lot of this:

I don't think the coach was involved, because, overall, bad for the team at that place on the field. Also, play before this one had the ejection of another player, so revenge for the "bad call" ref.

Not condoning this action, they need to be punished by the school and by civil/criminal courts. School has already acted, they've been kicked off the team. http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/...e-ISD-investigating-incident-with-6487775.php

True, but you still have to dig a little. At the very least, they came up with the plan in the huddle, so those teammates may have known it was coming.

It will be interesting to see if they just man up & take responsibility or if they try to drag people under the bus with them. Or worse, try to justify it somehow

Defenses usually don't huddle. They are usually spread out to be able to move to match the offensive formation, the two safeties could have conspired (obviously did to me) but the rest of the team didn't have to know a thing about it. The first link in the thread has a video that shows the play from a wide shot, and you can tell that the rest of the team was playing normal, reacting to the formation and moving to stop the running back.

Welp - I knew it'd eventually come down to racism claims (about the 1:26 mark)

So I'm confused. Every story I've seen says the other team was running out the clock, while SparHawk is saying the penalty set up the winning score. While I wouldn't put it beyond the realm of possibility, it would indeed be incredibly stupid if the kids did this while the other team was driving to win the game.

Yeah, that's what I'm finding now too. Reports I read on Saturday were all saying the game was tied when this happened... getting weirder...

http://blog.mysanantonio.com/hsspor...n-the-game-hit-marble-falls-qb-on-final-play/

Player involved in hit on ref wasn't ejected, but stayed in game.

Box score says game winning TD was scored with 5:35 left in the game. I suspect the incident happened after that.

EDIT: Reading the end of the article posted from MySA.com, it definitely appears that Marble Falls had the ball and was trying to get a first down so they could kneel down - which would indicate that it was well after the TD had scored.

This was garbage time, and those two kids from JJHS should be suspended and not allowed to play football for the rest of their HS careers.

At the very least they shouldn't be able to play sports in H.S., but I think they should be charged for assault. They could have killed that ref.

They take HS footbal WAY too seriously here in Texas. Cracked had an article about it recently.

It was likely the ref made a call the players or the coach didn't like, and so they took revenge on him for possibly costing them a big win.

My question is "Why have they not yet been charged with assault?"

If they were taking the game seriously they would not have tried to hurt the ref.

And now, with no surprise, a 29 year old assistant coach has been placed on administrative leave

http://blog.mysanantonio.com/hssports/2015/09/jay-coach-placed-on-leave-per-northside-isd-protocol/

And again, another mention of the referee making racist comments, which is again, not surprising given that that scenario is the ONLY possible defense that has a chance of being somewhat acceptable. (Even if it was the case, still unacceptable)

You and I have different interpretations of "serious" in this context.

People that take the game to0 seriously are people that get livid enough about a possible game loss that they are willing to try crippling a ref to get revenge for it. The win is everything, and losing is seen as something that not only embarrasses the players, but also the town they are from.

Yes, if they took the game professionally, then they should never have tried to hurt the ref, but from what I understand the damage was done, and the team already knew they were going to lose, so they took out the stress on the ref that made the call that, they feel, brought them the loss. Again, this assumes that is the case, since a lot of the info seems to be jumping between "They did it as revenge for a call" and "They did it because he was a racist jerk", so we will have to see in the end where the needle finally drops.

Needle drop. Here's an idea. You already know of two who did wrong. Slap them upside the head with a brick. If you found that someone else was in the wrong who maybe caused the others to do wrong: slap him upside the head with a brick. don't let one brick slapping stop the other.

Because refs drop racial slurs all the time. Riiiiight.

I don't buy that bullshit excuse at all.

My high school actually was part of an article in Sports Illustrated (this was my freshman year in 1994) after a ref tried to commit suicide since the people in the community went overboard going after the ref after the refs screwed the school's football team out of a win the playoffs (severely bad calls, refs were celebrating the fact that the other team scored what was the game-winning touchdown instead of doing the proper signal). Not saying that this was the case here, but people do tend to take things a bit too seriously.

The kids should be punished - if it was an accident during a play that was anywhere close, I would say don't punish, but this is clearly not the case. If they were told to do it by a coach, then they should get punished too.

The coach should be punished either way. That play happened just after two other players from that team were ejected.

If you order the code red, you have no business coaching that team. If you don't order the code red, your team is completely out of your control and you shouldn't be coaching them.

If anything that kid needs to be suspended for that haircut alone.

Thank goodness that a Texas high school football coach, true heroes of our time, took a stand against racial insensitivity. That'll show em.

They still need to be held accountable for choosing to go along with it. They're old enough to know better. And that coach should be punished severely for ordering it. And the boys need to drop the bullshit and stop hiding behind excuses and own up to their bad choice.

http://www.click2houston.com/news/b...ch-admits-he-ordered-hits-on-referee/35431458

A John Jay High School assistant coach told his school principal that he ordered his players to hit a referee in retaliation for racist language during a Sept. 4 game versus Marble Falls, according to ESPN.
