Why we are not tolerating Racism.

I just wanted to throw this out in light of another thread.

We try to have a place here where everyone is included and happy. Racism is a personal choice and I won't bag on anyone for feeling the way they do or expressing it constructively. But what I won't allow is blatant racism calling out a group of people.

Example of what WOULD be allowed:

I work in construction and have a huge dislike and distrust for Mexicans. It's hard for me to find a job now and it's directly because of the hiring of undocumented workers. I always feel that they are talking about me in Spanish and being around them makes me uncomfortable.
Example of what would NOT be allowed:

Fucking *snip*! Came in, took our jobs and smell like tacos! Fuckers never bathe and I just know they are talking about me in that jibber-jabber language of theirs! God! I just want them to all go back where they came from!
I think you see the difference.

Oh, and one other thing. Here's the traffic from the last TWO WEEKS. Think about this when you denigrate a society. You may not know who they are, but they are here.

You do realise that if all mexicans where WASPs they'd still be taking them jobs, right... because if you do i don't think it can be called racism (to the hypothetical worker guy).

Ok, no way that was only me... who else is here and what did you steal...

So are these numbers REAL? Are they individual visitors or repeat hits from a regular from said country?

you'd be surprised how global even little niche websites can be.
Last time I checked, my irish music website gets about a half-million hits a year from Russia and Korea.

(I just checked for more precise numbers, and their country resolution is broken :( )

Sure, the person in the first post isn't right... and he/she would probably be at yall's mercy, but that hypothetical poster isn't using slurs or stereotypes to express his/her discomfort.

I'm not saying what I agree with or disagree with, but instead of attacked poster #1, maybe someone could offer some insight or help. Maybe he/she doesn't want to feel that way. It's a learned thing.

And yeah alien, you're right. Concern for lost jobs is a real thing, but it can be expressed better than the second person did.

The first one is acceptable too?
I was going to say the same thing.
Explaining one's prejudices vs. ROW ROW BURN THE MINORITIES.
All this has done is made what's defined as racism up to Dave. That's a tough call on his part if he wants to monitor it. Some would define racism as disparaging remarks made against a race as a whole instead of the individuals responsible for the activity you are against.

Even SeriousJay's post about his Korean neighbours - he was using Korean as a descriptor for his neighbours, not saying all Koreans are evil. (Well, up until later in the thread where he calls all Koreans bad neighbours...)

It's just easier to say that racism is like Porn. Can't define it, but you'll know it when you see it.

she wrote the whole thing...

but i was just saying, racism implies seeing race as part of what makes one dislike them... you can't say an american is racism coz he dislikes the british or the french...

you...CAN'T explain prejudices... that's why they're CALLED prejudices... trying to put them in a rational light just makes you a bigot.
I guess trying to understand oneself is such a bigoted thing to do, yeah. Don't worry Calleja, *everybody* that has a mistrust for ____________ out there are a bunch of irrational mouth-foamers when it comes to the subject.

...that wouldn't make him a RACIST, no, but still a BIGOT.... what the hell are you talking about? Generalizing a whole COUNTRY is still bigotry.

Everyone has prejudices and we all have pre-concieved notions and we all have personal experiences that color us one way or the other. That isn't the same thing as racism. It's not "good" but it's a far cry from hating a race for their skin color.

@Denbrought
By definition prejudice implies having an opinion based on lack of knowledge...

@Calleja

Yup, but if we're talking about racism we should stick to it and not include bigotry too. (smoking baby got it)

All this has done is made what's defined as racism up to Dave.
The way i read it he sees both as racist, but the 1st one he sees as not a banable offence.

Some here are going to call it all racism. It's really opening up a can of worms trying to define racism and put guidelines around it. Just let the mods have some discretion and try to keep it on the down low.

FYI I would never stop making fun of either of those posts. People that are earnestly racist are the funniest thing to me. It's so absurd to hate an entire group of people.

....fuck, I'm feeling like Charssinger RAGE over this thread, seriously.

We're tolerating bigotry now. Literally.

Are those country stats by IP? Because I don't think I've used 10 different IPs in the last two weeks, so I'm wondering who the other Taiwanese people are.

As for the racism and bigotry issue, I think the first version is all right. It's certainly a lot less vitriolic than what we get in, say, movie threads.

No. We aren't tolerating bigotry. We are tolerating peoples feelings, which isn't always the same thing. We are ALL prejudiced by our experiences and such. Dealing with those isn't racist. If you see something you THINK IS racist just report it and we will deal with it appropriately. Let's not get sidetracked by to many theoretical here people.

.... so saying "I don't trust Mexicans" is racism and not bigotry?

Cause there's only ONE race in Mexico?

Cause we're staying within the confines of "racism", because saying "all british people disgust me" is okay, right?

No one really got in trouble for saying the same sort of disgusting things/generalizations about women, so I just assumed. I ain't tha bauss. Whatever! It's more gross opinions to laugh at for me.

No is saying any of the above is okay or good. It would, at the very least show severe ignorance, possibly more. Like I said, let's not get sidetracked by to many theoretical.
