Trying to remember the name of a story

It's a short story, I think, where there is a main character who is strong and handsome, but it's some kind of dystopian future where he is required to wear a mask to make him look ugly and chains to make him weak.

I occasionally think of this story when I'm stuck on the phone with the company that provides tech support for some of the computers at work. You just can't get away from the phone call and the activity on the call is just random and infrequent enough that it serves to scramble any useful train of thought, much like the ear pieces in the story.
