[TV] The What Anime Are You Watching Thread!

DARLING in the FRANXX

WOW-this...this looks unoriginal. Ya got the angsty anime protagonist, the manic pixie dream girl love interest who CHANGES his life, a random English word "Parasite" to call the power users, and a race of emotionless sci-fi monsters that attack humanity most likely because man made them in the first place because science fiction!

ALSO-the English translators decided in their VAST wisdom to change the monster's name from Kyoryu...to Klaxosaurs....are you fucking serious?! KLAXOSAUR?! That sounds like a POKEMON-at least TRY to keep this serious! Kyoryu may make me flashback to Power Rangers, but its still a better name than Klaxosaur.

The art and animation are superb though(minus generic character design) so I might watch it for that, but the pilot did NOT wow me story wise.

I am now imagining a Godzilla-ish movie but with the screams replaced by Model T horns:
"Oh no! Run! It's Klaxosaur!"
"AwooOOOOoogah!"
"He's stomping the power station! Nothing we do has any effect!"
"AWWOOOOOOOGAAAAHHH!"

FINISHED ep three...I'm surprised this show was made in 2012, seeing as how one guy reprogrammed a high-tech futurebot with just a floppy disk....also they still use floppy disks in this future? It really IS a dystopia!

I binged all of My Hero Academia within 36 hours and now I have to wait for more. (I know it's not too bad of a wait... Yet)

Julie wanted me to watch her favorite anime from many years back, Revolutionary Girl Utena.

And I love it.

I think the silly parts would've annoyed me if I watched it at the age and time she watched it, but now there's a charm of "aw, 90s" to it so it doesn't drag down anything else in the show.

But her DVDs are old. Really old. So old that one says "you must have a DVD-ROM and at least Windows 95 to run." So with her birthday coming, I'm going to upgrade her favorite anime to the full Blu-ray set.

If anyone is participating in the /r/anime best girl contest, be sure to vote for Leona Ozaki before the last day of eliminations ends this afternoon.

Give you three guesses why I started watching this, and the first two don't count.

Ahem, anyway...

Genre: Romance, fantasy
Fanservice: None whatsoever
Premise: An herbalist who has extremely rare apple-red hair decides to flee the nation where she has lived all her life when the local princeling decides he wants her for her concubine. Lost deep in the woods in an unfamiliar country, she has a fateful meeting with a young man who turns out to be second prince of the neighboring kingdom. She decides to make her new life there, and it takes them 12 episodes to realize they're in love.

This isn't like most anime I find myself watching. The pace is very sedate and character interaction is the focus of every episode. I'm reminded a lot of Spice and Wolf (only without all the naked). It does suffer a bit in that almost every character is a one-dimensional trope, but it gets extra points in that the protagonist heroine is not damseled, even when she's literally a damsel in distress. She gets kidnapped? She usually manages to escape on her own, or talk her way out of trouble. The prince arrives usually when she's got things pretty much wrapped up. Her one driving motivation is that she doesn't want anyone else to dictate her future or limit her choices, and it's a little refreshing to see a female character that accomplishes that without becoming a militant social-commentary pastiche. That said, I think this would be a series most aimed at girls and young women, as it's long on will-they-won't-they GET ON WITH IT yearning, short on action, and no real recurring villain or overall plot arc/conflict other than a young couple coming to terms with how they feel about each other. Also, bonus points for having an actual beginning, middle, and end.

Verdict: Not exactly to my taste, but if taken for what it is, a quality example of its genre that doesn't pander, but also doesn't do anything to shake up the formula.

I haven't watched any shows in 3+ weeks (and I was already over a week behind), hoping to get back into it at some point in the near future... I'll have so many episodes to catch up on, yay?

Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori

Based on a manga of the same name. Slice of life genre with some food porn. It's 4 guys running a cafe called Rokuhoudou. It's pacing matches the idea of this cafe being a place to relax and rest for a while. At first I thought there was going to be time travel involved, but it's just that the cafe is rustic and old-fashioned compared with the modern lives of it's clientele and the surrounding city.

Certainly not a "must watch" show, but it is a nice change of pace. For me personally, this is kind of like Mushishi meets Yuru Camp because I find it very relaxing to watch. I know a lot of people will find it boring, but sometimes I need boring.

Megalobox

Saw a few eps, looks pretty cool, and also got me interested in Champion Joe. Question, do the boxing gears do anything cool or over the top? Because if they don't it just looks like its boxing with battle armor, which is cool, but I could easily just watch a boxing show.

Gurazeni: Money Pitch

Pros: Nice little slice of life story about the financial struggle of Japanese pro baseball players, and the hardwork that goes in keeping a high paying salary.

Cons: Really...bad CGI at times, and its ALWAYS obvious.

The MAL score is low on this because of the anti-sportsball crowd and those salty about
the OP and ED girl not appearing yet.
As a baseball fan, though, I'm loving this show.

...wait she hasn't appeared in TWELVE episodes? THAT is bizarre.

ALSO-started "I can't understand what my husband is saying" and...did anyone ELSE not expect a character to be called "Destiny Fucker" to appear? I would be surprised if there was a character with that name in Panty and Stocking, just WEIRD.

Absolute sillyness that is.

AND-because "I can't understand what my husband is saying" is more of a short film than a two season show, I am logically done AND...I want more. The premise through me off for years because many compared it to "Big Bang theory" which I DESPISE-but there's legit heart to this slice of life show and is more than a slew of pop-culture references. KINDA wish Kaoru and Hajime's parents designs could've looked more distinct, as they look about the same age as their friends. But outside of that I enjoyed it.

Yeah, this season of My Hero Academia has been kind of fucking amazing. I really wonder why the subject of Midoriya's father has never been more throughly explained than what his perk is and that he's "working abroad". It's the fucking age of the internet; you'd think Midoriya would have heard from him.

I've always thought he was secretly a villain or something.
