As a kid, I remember reading the instruction manual and being surprised the bosses were called mayors.

By the way, anyone else miss having wonderful, interesting game manual things to read? I remember getting a game as a kid, getting into the car and ripping into the manual to psyche myself up for when I got home.

Five levels, traveling left, right, left, right, left. I really thought that traveling left to begin with was a dead give-away, since almost all games travel to the right. This game has no throwing moves, no health pickups, no weapons (at least none used by the hero). I was about to say it's not an arcade game, but I checked and I was wrong. I'm only familiar with the NES version, but according to Wikipedia there were ports to more than a dozen different platforms (including BeOS, woah.)

I imagine that few people ended up playing the game this way, and there were probably much better and more memorable events later in the game. I played this one on my friend's Commodore 64, only we weren't the brightest kids. I was like 11 at the time, and we just wanted to fight stuff, not solve puzzles or pay attention to dialog. One time we actually did manage to progress the story, and see more of the game beyond the starting town (we even got past the sewers to an overworld map!), but we lost the saved game because we didn't label the floppy discs we were using. Since no one else seems to be trying, and it's a pretty obscure reference: It's one of the old Gold Box D&D games: Curse of the Azure Bonds. In the game you wake up with blue tattoos and no memory of who you are or how you got them, in a town that's locked down for the security of a visiting queen (I think.) There's not a lot to do in town aside from buy equipment and get in a bar fight. My friend and I fought the same bar fight over and over. Our party was the extremely well balanced group of 2 rangers and 4 fighters, all in full plate mail and most often wielding two handed swords. Our characters always had 18 for all their stats, because we cheated (and we never had female characters, because they could only have 18(50) strength, instead of 18(00).

One time wewe managed to progress the story, which meant showing up at the guards just as the queen was passing. My friend and I never figured out what made the queen come by, we were too stupid to realize it was a set in-game time. We then reached the sewers and some pretty interesting fights, but our party balance was horrible, we had no idea what we were doing with identifying magic items, and we just generally failed at the game.

Yes, you're right on the numbering. The plot for 6 was a lot more complicated than 4's was, so I can't remember how many characters die in 6. Shadow can if you don't wait for him, and General Leo dies but isn't really a party member. I'm not sure about any others. FF4, though... I think five party members make noble sacrifices, seemingly dying for the sake of others, and by the end of the game only one of them is actually dead.

YES! That's the one. (and that's the first of 85 videos worth of walkthrough, so grab a drink)
I debated leaving the phrase "subway ghost" in there, because Vincent Schiavelli was pretty much the only clue with a 1:1 ratio (ie, Google "subway ghost" and basically you get him), but otherwise I thought it would be too hard. Here's the clue breakdown:

Luther is cursed with shapeshifting abilities, he will randomly (and often inconveniently) become a giant beast (higher attack) or tiny lizard (better magic) in order to access other areas of the game (which is subtitled, "Guardians of Destiny"). He is always saying, "Too far," or "If only I could reach that," when you try to pick something up that's just out of reach.
The dragon-like guy is the Draracle (Dragon Oracle), and is voiced by Clancy Brown, who has also voiced Lex Luthor (as well as being the Kurgan in the original Highlander movie, but that would've been another 1:1 clue). Vincent is the director of a monastary where you learn how to use a power orb. Much later, he visits the home of Kit'yara (who is played by Julie Newmar). Yes, they had Catwoman play a cat woman. One of the guards that follows him after he escapes is named Kenneth. He dies and you later meet Kenneth's girlfriend, and when you do you throw up a little in your mouth.

There are many endings to the game, but one of them involves getting killed by a character who is acted by someone that was also on Guiding Light.

And when I said the game predates DX9, I meant it. It even predates DOS 6.22!

I haven't, but I bought it for my wife and she played an hour or two before getting distracted and never touching it. If a handheld version comes out for the Vita, I intend to get that, but I can't do the kind of grinding needed for a SMT game while hogging the TV.

I still lived at home when I got DDS. There were many arguments to be had over the TV.

Thankfully, hubby (then boyfriend) had his own TV so I just brought my memory card and stuff down there. My parents thought it was indecent for meto bspend so much time in his bed room, to much opportunity for 'naughtiness'.

It took me SO many tries. YEARS. I finally beat it ONCE, not even cheating, and could never do it again. But yeah, it ramps up difficulty at the end to ridiculous levels that today wouldn't be countenanced. But back then, a game's difficulty was often considered a mark of its quality too.

I had thought that was always the interpretation of the Silent Hill games. The monsters are just manifestations of the guilt and/or insanity of the main character.

Watching the video made me remember how much I enjoyed the game, even to the glitches like the item on the ground turning into a different graphic when you turned if there was a monster behind the door (a handy trick in later levels). I even remember the layout for all the secret doors.

I may have to break out my good ol' Intellivision just to play it again.

You got it. I was always very interested in playing that game, completely based on the cover. I mean the game was fun too. It was essentially just trying to navigate a maze before the second player was able to catch you. But just the thought of it being a cops and robbers game made it 10 x more enjoyable.

Four kings in four corners protected by their castles, though a destructive weapon is set loose which can destroy them. You are a knight who protects one of these castles with your shield. Protect your king until he is the last left standing.

I quite enjoyed it, but like most sims I was never really that great at it. It was complicated because not only did you have to please everyone in Heaven, you had to do the exact opposite of everything to torment people in hell. For example in Heaven you want their virtues to all be very close so they don't have to walk too far from the front gates. In hell you want them to travel really far, so you have to build long complicated roads to everything.
