Terraria!

I just want to plug a addictive little game called Terraria. It is a 2D platformer with lots of elements of minecraft, but a more progression-to-goal style of gameplay. I.e. there's tiers of armor, weapons and enemies, there are boss monsters and high-level, very dangerous biomes to explore (such as the hellworld). Once you've built your hovel, you can build additional rooms and after you have met requirements, NPC's will move in such as a merchant, a nurse (heals you for a fee), and others. Additionally, there's guns, jetpacks, grappling hooks, magic and magic items, and loads of other stuff! The developers have also promised to add tons of other biomes and respective items and enemies in the future, so you can be on the lookout for that as well.

Gameplay trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7uOhFTrrq0 (advice: if you don't want to spoil the entire game, click around to random times to see some different things rather than watching the whole 5 minutes, which will show every biome and boss, as far as I know)

Not yet convinced? Watch this instead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5ObeTJ7jow

There are also numerous let's plays on youtube, including one of an early alpha version by the devs themselves.

It is available on Steam for 8-10 euros/dollars/pounds. The main Terraria site with an FAQ is here.

I play for like 3 hours (didn't even know I lost that much time) it is pretty simple and fun. I got a question. If I build an underground kingdom, can NPC still arrive to your place? How does it know it is your "home"? (there isn't a marker per se like "This is your home marker") right now I just build near the Guide guy, but I'm thinking of expanding and go underground.

An NPC house can be made by making a room that is at least 5 blocks high on the inside and has:
- a wooden floor or better (without any wooden platforms, although you can put those in once the NPC has moved in if you wish)
- a back wall without gaps (careful with this one, it can get pretty hard to see the smaller ones)
- a door that is reachable from the outside (without other doors in the way),
- a table, chair and light source.

If you plan on building an apartment complex for your npcs, make sure to make the floors between rooms at least two thick, as they can't share a wall vertically if they are to be considered a room. Then, once the requirement for the NPC is met (i.e. 50 silver coins for the merchant to show up) they will move in.

It can be a bit tricky to get the NPC to the room itself, since they need to physically walk into the room. They won't drop more than 3 blocks and won't jump up more than 3 blocks (in one go), either. However, if you are way offscreen (say, about 100/200 feet away) when you get the message ''NPC has arrived!'', they are usually in the room when you get back.

As a final note, remember that the guide will take whatever room you first build, because he is a jerk.

I notice that. What I did was a single layer with 6 homes. I just want to make sure if I can built it underground or not. I guess I could test this ;)

Tomorrow we are going to see Pirates! (free) compliment of our Project A-Kon director. wifey really wanna go see it so won't be home till late (9:30pm showing CST)

plus I suck at this game :) I just started yesterday and trying to learn all about it. I think I like the 2D better than 3D minecraft :)

I am not too sure on co-op yet. Gonna tinker some more until I am more comfortable with this game hehe.

I would love a coop game, but I am not sure if should set up the server, since my internet is unreliable at best. We'll figure something out.

What I have discover so far: I read the release notes somewhere that the spawn point not "suppose" to destroy stuff, but it did on my game. I accidentally made one of the house right on top of my spawn point. Each time I log in, it blew up part of the house (remove the tiles) So now I got a sign and a space saying "Spawn point" hehe

Also, it was a pain in the butt to get the NPC into the house. I try to do the underground, but didn't seem to work. (I got impatient) but I got a new project I want to do with Terraria :)

I want to get this for my and my gf. Problem is $20 is too much for us to drop at at time. If this ever hits the $4.99 mark, we'll pick it up.

Will they be on the same or different computers? IIRC they have a deal where if you buy one you get the second discounted - as long as it's a gift for someone else. It may have been a Steam deal for that day but I remember wishing I had a friend to send a gift to when I bought mine.

I am not sure, but the 4-pack deal might still be going if you can find two other friends to split the costs. It'll be slightly cheaper.

I love how a game like Terraria does "Cosmetic slots" like so many MMOs but WoW still refuses to do it. Hilarious.

So I'm bumping this shit.

It's 2$

Who wants to play coop with me.

I barely played and only accept to play with other noobs.

I tried playing Terraria. It felt like a 2D minecraft, but I couldn't figure out how to do anything, and then I fell down a dark hole that I couldn't see, couldn't find a way out of, and drown. Twice.

Let's play COOP my bearded friend.

I got gifted Terraria on Steam, fired it up and got confused as hell, and decided to go play something more suited to my level of intellectual ability. Like Call of Duty.

One of these days I will give it another shot.

Apparently over a year ago I promised I would give Terraria another shot. I have yet to follow through on this promise. I am ashamed
