We Live in Time (2024)

This movie made no sense! Why is Spider-Man hooking up with Yelena? Did he cross dimensions or something? Is she working undercover as a chef? Why is he speaking in a British accent?!

In all seriousness, this was great. Some phenomenal acting from both leads and some incredibly subtle acting at times. Especially his last expression right before the credits roll. They have insanely great chemistry together.

My only criticism is the movie is told non-linearary, jumping around to different parts of their life together. It jumps from when they have a kid abd then back to when they first meet. It's a little hard to follow at times because, except for a key hairstyle change for one of them later on, there's little indication where we are in the timeline. There's no clear segue between the times, either, so it'll abruptly change from present to past without warning. I got the jist of it eventually, but it was difficult at first.

Still, a great movie. Bring tissues if you plan on watching it.

Love Hurts (2025)

Whew, this was...not good.

The movie's only saving grace was the fight choreography. And even then, they seemed to REALLY enjoy throwing each other onto tables and counters as big money shots, devaluing the shot with every use.

But for as charming as some as the cast is, they had zero chemistry among each other. There's also this weird recurring thing where everyone gets inner monologues like it was a bad film noir. It just doesn't work and feels like a lot of bad ADR. There's a long sequence where you hear the entirety of someone's voicemail and it's played like the other person is listening to it, but they aren't.

The characters are one-dimensional, at best, even Quan's character. Some side characters, like two thugs, get way too much screen time so there's little time left to develop Quan or his love interest. Oh, and it bugs me that all the killers in the movie get nicknames but Quan doesn't. For all the build up, he deserved a nickname like John Wick's Baba Yaga or something.

After hearing a lot of bad reviews, I went into this with pretty low expectations and still came out kind of disappointed. Not enough that I regret watching it, but enough that I'm glad I didn't see this in theaters like I'd intended.

Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

I've always liked the Hunger Games books and movies. I'd never say they were great or ranked high among my favourites, but I've enjoyed them.

For whatever reason, I felt like watching this tonight and...it's okay. Everything building up to the titular Hunger Games and the games themselves is pretty good. You get some great acting from Rachel Zegler, Peter Dinklage, and Viola Davis. The action is great once it gets there. But once the titular Hunger Games end, the movie keeps going for another 30+ minutes and just draaaaaaaags to the finish line.

While it wasn't necessarily bad overall, it's certainly the worst of the series to date. It goes into my usual category of "No regrets watching it, but glad I didn't pay money for it."
