I decided to look up alcohol flush on wikipedia.

In about 50% of Asians, the increased acetaldehyde accumulation is worsened by another gene variant, the mitochondrial ALDH2 allele, which results in a less functional acetaldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme, responsible for the breakdown of acetaldehyde.[9] The result is that affected people may be better at metabolizing alcohol, often not feeling the alcohol "buzz" to the same extent as others, but show far more acetaldehyde-based side effects while drinking.

I don't have any asian genes in my ancestry, as far as I know...but this really describes me to a T. It's so hard for me to even catch a buzz.

Well, the symptoms are pretty spot on with the alcohol flush symptoms, down to the secondary gene mutation making it hard for me to get drunk, so I'm just going under that assumption.

Plus, when I was in the navy, I used to drink so heavily that if I were allergic, it'd have likely killed me ;)

I have the same reaction, it's usually called Asian blush or Asian glow. We both likely have Asian ancestry -somewhere- in our gene pool, I mean, everyone on earth is like 35th cousins, or something like that.

We've documented our family history pretty extensively--england, russia, and polish jew, mostly. A bit of american indian.

But you know, family trees don't always tell the complete tale--life is messy. So you never know. It's possible.

Not likely. There are mutations (SNPs - single nucleotide polymorphisms) that are found in European populations and in Asians that are also linked to alcohol intolerance.

It's found in Asians with ~40% frequency and ~15% frequency in Europeans. Asians have other SNPs that give them much more intolerance (net effect of the SNPs), and thus the name Asian blush.

No words about this over here, the cinema even announced costumed attendees in their ad. A few were there, but the local fanclub obviously didn't show up and the 2 (non-dressed up) members we met didn't seem to care. People...
