Computer installing corrupted(?) drivers every time I log in.

Okay, I can’t figure this one out…

Every time I log on to my computer (either by returning from sleep mode or by restarting the computer), I get a message telling me that it’s installed the driver for an ATA device. Each device has a different, weird name, though they all seem to be corrupted versions of the same name.

Here's some examples:









The only ATA device that’s actually on my computer is the Hitachi HTS543216L9A300 ATA Device (a 160gb hard drive).

If anyone has the slightest clue or theory as to what the heck is going on, I’d appreciate it if you’d let me know.

hmmmmmmmmm... from a glance, it could be two things.

1. your hhd is mess up and trying to "attach itself" again
2. it is a virus that trying to "re-establish" its own partition to protect itself.

I'd be more inclined to #2 than #1. Boot up in Safe Mode and run your virus software again. That and find a site that analyzes HijackThis prints and let them break stuff down for you.

Yea I'm going with #2 myself, but just letting him know it could be either. (I still agree it is more likely that is #2) but yea, if you can run a hijackthis in safe mode, you can find out what are your "Run" commands and what are trying to load. If you are comfortable, you can send a PM or post it here and we can try to figure out what is what.

If you don't know, HijackThis is a program that analyzes stuff and allows you to get rid of bad stuff and keep the good stuff.

Let me know if I'm getting too technical.

HijackThis is an excellent tool...but like most awesome tools, exercise care using it.

Well, the drivers have stopped installing themselves, which leads me to believe one of two things:

1) Computers are magic, and the problem was solved by the fantastical cyberpixies.

or

2) the problem is still there, it's just that the most obvious symptom is gone.

I didn't see anything odd in there, but I'm not an expert at reading those.

It seems like an odd thing for a virus to do, so I'm not so sure that's it. If you look at your device manager are there a bunch of disk drives? It almost seems like your drive is messed up and maybe having issues reporting it's correct name. Hard to tell though.

Either way, I'd make sure you have everything backed up just in case.

the only thing I can see is"Seagate-Replica-Service.exe" Do you have the drive connected upon boot? it could be that the system is trying to setup a "shadow" copy (I am not sure how that software works but according to http://www.softsailor.com/news/1851...y-backs-up-everything-on-your-hard-drive.html it backs up your HDD with a software.

It "could" be trying to mount the drive and back it up (possibility) note this is just a quick glance.
I had to look up some of them. I realize this is a laptop so you need a lot of stuff to run it (so many stuff in run command)

Hmm... I don't think that would be the seagate backup drive, since that's currently in Nevada, I'm in in Washington DC, and it doesn't have any cross-country wireless capabilities that I'm aware of.

Checking out the device manager, there is something interesting under ATA controllers...

Huh. Don't know why I didn't notice it last time I checked, but it looks like those device names actually were perversions of my disk drive name.

There's nothing suspicious under the disk drive in the device manager, though...



Maybe the drive became dislodged at some point, then was eventually pushed back into the socket?
