2018-2019 Season: The Rise of Gritty

#1

checkeredhat

Pre season has officially begun so I think it's time for a new thread.

A quick summary to get us started:

Karlsson is a Shark, Tavares is a Leaf, Yzerman is mysteriously stepping down, the Caps apparently broke the cup doing keg stands, and Ottawa is in the dumpster, which is on fire and inside another, larger dumpster and we all kinda really feel bad for them but man, that Melnyk video will never not be funny in a really cringe way.

Rasmus Dahlin is the greatest player in NHL history and nothing can convince me otherwise.

And I will say that the final four will be Pittsburgh, Toronto, Vegas (again) and That Team That Plays in That Arena a Block Away From the Ryman Auditorium.

Pittsburgh takes the Leafs in seven (and Crosby drives the dagger home), while TTTPiTAaBAFtRA takes back the Western Conference title in six.

This time, Subban scores the first goal of the series AND IT COUNTS, DAMMIT. Team in the right shade of Gold wins in six.

Seems a bit early to be calling your shots, but I can't be all that mad. I'd love for the Leafs to make it to the conference finals.

The more I think about it, the more I like this idea. Lets make some BOLD-ASS predictions!
  • Tampa takes the President's Trophy
  • Leafs make the final, beating Tampa in the conference final
  • Nashville takes the cup
  • Leafs finish regular season with 3 players over 80P (Mathews, Tavares and Marner). Nylander and Kadri both finish over 60.
  • Islanders win draft lottery

I'm not sure he'll be signed until Dec now.

Jay Baruchel on Carlton, Youppi, and Gritty, in an interview from the Athletic:
IMG_20181030_170744.jpg

I take issue with his description of Leafs fans as non committal and inoffensive. 50yrs with no cup and its still the largest fanbase in the NHL and one of the most profitable franchises in North American sports, I'd call that committed. And everyone is offended by us ALL THE Time.

But his description of the mascots is bang on.

#28

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

We are approaching American Thanksgiving, when it is generally agreed that the standings are more or less set and a playoff picture begins to come into focus (still insane to me- seems like maybe 82 games is too much if we are already at that point by 20).

How's your team faring?

Leafs are 1 point behind Tampa Bay for first in the division and they actually beat them in score differential. Bruins are breathing down their necks and also seem to STILL be the team they just can't beat. This race is going to be fun to watch.

Leafs have been so-so at home, which is an improvement because up until recently they were trash at home. And they're dominating on the road. Again, interesting because the strength of the depth down centre is supposed to be that it makes matchups a hell and yet they're more scary when that advantage is taken from them.

They've proven that they can manage without Nylander for a while as long as their top guys step up, but simultaneously look like they desperately need him so they have more scoring depth on the 3rd and 4th lines.

We're supposedly halfway through Mathews' injury and looking like we'll survive it with a positive record (AGAIN. And yet I'm sure if he's injured again next season people will panic AGAIN).

Andersen has been an absolute beast and yet this has me worried. Because Sparks has only had 3 starts and has been awful in two of them. Babcock is understandably hesitant to give him more starts with that record, but I don't think he's going to improve by sitting on the bench for 80% of the games. Hopefully Babs gives Andersen some more nights off once a playoff position is locked.

Still no Nylander and I'm starting to get scared. I trust Dubas, but at the same time, when even the Athletic, the only sports reporters worth listening to anymore, are talking trade potential, I fear we may lose him. God I hope not. This team will be downright lethal with the tag teaming of Mathews/Nylander, Tavares/Marner, and Kapenan/ Kadri. And I'd rather let him sit out the season than undervalue him in a trade and then have to face him for the next 8 yrs.

Marner is still my favourite Leaf. Kid is so much fun to watch and seems to develop chemistry with anyone he's put in a line with. Even gets Tavares to smile.

Morgan Reilly is finally turning heads in the broader hockey community as a bona fide number one D man, and Dermott deserves to be playing more. Literally every player on the Leafs performs better when he's on the ice.

So that's where we stand. You guys?

#29

blotsfan

blotsfan

We're a competitive team. I had super high hopes for Skinner and he's exceeded them. Him and Eichel have amazing chemistry and I really hope we can lock him down. It's been so long since I've enjoyed watching the Sabres this much.

Not to mention I can't remember the last time we've had a defenseman as defensively strong as Dahlin. His offensive game isn't there yet but there are glimpses. He's going to be amazing.

#30

Wasn't a taunt, just a direct response to the "I'm usually Fuck Dallas anyway" as just a friendly jab. I only root for the Stars from Dallas, none of the other major sports. That's also why the smiley is there to show it isn't anything serious.

Really an amazing stat for a team to come though a 6-game series with 100% PPK. Stars should be a good match with St Louis for a good series. Not real sure who will win it though, STL has been hot, but Dallas seems to be getting everything rolling right too.

#131

Pfft. No. Dummy had the Bolts going all the way.

BTW: 12.94% on the PP, worst in the NHL. Only the Habs scored fewer PPG on the season. This team should have just declined the penalty every time, or immediately had Grimaldi or someone swing at the guy they lined up with before the faceoff to eliminate the power play.

I found it to be incredibly offensive for being terrible and bad.

(Since you don't seem to get the reference it's the stars cheating their way to get a cup over my Sabres. Sorry for abusing the report system).

I think it’s the flagrant Buffalo (Sabre) shot.

As of right now, only five teams have not reached the finals in the Expansion Era: Columbus (who have never even made it to the semifinals), Winnipeg/Atlanta, Minnesota, Arizona/Phoenix/Winnipeg of old, and, of course, Toronto.

Should Boston make the finals next year, they will tie Montreal for most finals appearances since the '67 expansion.

He finds offense that the Dallas Stars won the Cup in 1999 with a game winning goal from Brett Hull. That’s it.

Someone ACTUALLY reported it?

It's a controversial goal that won the Stars the cup.
Im not going to get into it but here's what wikipedia has to say on it:
Brett Hull's goal ended the series and the Stars were awarded the Stanley Cup. The referees did not seek a review from the video judge, although NHL officials said that they reviewed the tape several times. They subsequently told the incensed Buffalo Coach Lindy Ruff that although Hull's left skate preceded the puck into the crease, Hull had continuous possession and the goal was legal. "The rule was absolutely, correctly applied," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "It was a nonissue. Everyone understands it was the right call." NHL Director of Officiating Bryan Lewis said there was no crease violation because "Hull had possession of the puck when his skate entered the crease."

In years since, Buffalo fans have often cited this event as the "No Goal game".

This is the only time Dallas has won the Stanley Cup, while Buffalo has not returned to the Finals since this series. Dallas returned to the Finals in 2000 but lost to the New Jersey Devils.

Yeah, the report was a joke and he admitted it. Nothing to see here except my ignorance and apathy about an NHL goal.

And just as no one here admits to supporting Trump, no one's admitting to being a Philly fan? :p

If Weber plays out his entire contract, Nashville comes out great.

#194

I think that if Weber even thinks of retiring, Poile is going to personally drive to Sicamous and beat him over the head with a bag of pucks - all while saying "I didn't give up sight in my right eye for you to #### me over like that!!!"

#195

Vrii

Vrii

Hold on, you guys are calling this as Jersey losing the trade? They're giving up a bust of a purely defensive defenseman, a former 7th round pick who may or may not ever stick in the NHL, and two seconds for PK Subban, and you think they lost the trade??

#196

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

So far just I am saying it. Subban is one of the highest paid players in the league but routinely puts up middle of the road numbers. He's overpaid by at least $3M/year. He's The 4th maybe 3rd best defensemen for Nashville, and maybe their 6th best player overall, yet a huge cap hit for them. With him off the books I expect Matt Duchene to sign with Nashville in a few weeks.

Secondly, I feel that the NHL trades are all about versatility recently. Four bodies for a single player gives Nashville lots of new opportunities.

#197

jwhouk

jwhouk

Yes, they lost the trade. Because Poile will turn those two picks into gold (pardon the pun) somewhere down the line.

It also frees up more $ for Josi and Ellis, who are the real top d-pairing in Nashville.

#198

Vrii

Vrii

Nashville turned their 3rd or 4th best defenseman into a terrible 6th D, a fringe NHL prospect, and two seconds that combined have about a 70% chance of turning into an NHL player - granted, Subban is a big commitment, but Nashville is also a much worse team for making this trade if they don't manage to sign Duchene or someone comparable with the cap space.

New Jersey, on the other hand, turned a bunch of chaff into a good to great NHL defenseman (remember that he's won a Norris, and outside of a mediocre single season last year has never been anything close to a disappointment). They're a much, much better team for making the trade and they can afford the cap space Subban takes up. By all means there's room to say that this was a good move for Nashville in the long run as well, but saying that the Devils lost anything at all here is ridiculous.

#199

HCGLNS

HCGLNS

One thing to think off is that Nashville was not going to protect Subban in the expansion draft. He's the third highest paid defenseman in the league and they were gonna let him go unprotected. So they shed his contract to get offense and defense they can keep going forward.

I think NJ will benefit from Subban, and it looks like a good team next year.

It's really just his contract, and that's MTLs fault. Is he worth $9M in cap space a year? No. Not even close. For 10% of your teams payroll you need to be a lot more. Frankly I think that kind of money can only be justified on forwards.

#200

Vrii

Vrii

I don't disagree that Subban is overpaid, or that (conditional on spending the created space to fill a need) this trade can work out to Nashville's advantage as well. I just think framing it as "NJ got screwed" when they picked up a massive upgrade without moving a single useful piece off their roster is silly.

I think there's room for D to be paid 9+, but it's for guys like Chara 5 years ago or healthy Karlsson - guys who completely take over when they're on the ice and basically provide 30 minutes/game of "my team wins." Subban had a couple seasons of looking like he could be that kind of player, but it looks like he peaked a bit below it and might be starting to decline now, so it's a scary contract. (I'd still take him over Weber.)

I have inquired of my fellow faithful. There is a thought that the U and the N are going to be saved from PK's old jerseys for a new one with a D, C, H, and two E's.

#202

Vrii

That's pretty definitely what the team is aiming for. Having talked to him already would be tampering, though, so there's presumably some risk that he'll decide to sign somewhere else and leave Nashville to figure out a backup plan.

There has been no secret that Duchene has wanted to play in Nashville for the longest time. I don't know if he shares an agent with someone on the Preds, but it wouldn't surprise me.

He didn't. He put in 3 lines of clear opinionated speculation with absolutely nothing to suggest it was factual, buried in the bottom of a speculative article about Kawhi Leonard. Then twitter and reddit pulled it out of context, leapt to wild and completely unfounded conclusions, and are now blaming Simmons for something he never did.

It's a stupid, stupid clusterfuck.
